Yiannis Economou worked at Chateau Margaux in the early 1990s after working and studying in Piemonte (Alba) for several years. He then went back to his native Crete with the goal of making wine even greater than the best wines of Bordeaux and Piemonte. My first wine from Economou and certainly not the last. A complex nose with sweet, slightly cooked fruits, mainly dark like plums and brambles but raspberries can be found, too. On top of that licorice, barnyard, herbs and some oak spice. In the mouth the wine is fresher than the nose might suggest, structured and beautifully textured. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from Crete— Open for four days— Very enjoyable wine, but ultimately I think now may be an inopportune time to drink. On the plus side, the wine is as previous tasters have described: bright, prickly, leafy fruit—sometimes red, sometimes black—on the nose; good tertiary qualities—cigar box, leather, wet forest floor, and a little meatiness here and there. Popped and poured. This pours light ruby in the glass. The nose is immediately expressive and complex showing ripe plum, cassis, cedar, bay leaf, a kiss of charred new oak via dark chocolate and coffee grounds, moss, moist forest undergrowth, and twigs. The palate enters on bright cassis notes, quickly turning to prominent medium plus tannin, and medium acid that recalls the entirety of the nose. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%) from old franc-de-pied vineyards. Fermented spontaneously, aged for several years in various vessels. 13,5% alcohol.
