You have to consider the chronology of this wine from the moment it was opened to fully appreciate it: Opened 3 hours before: immense bitterness with a herbaceous note that unbalances the overall effect, concern about the condition of the bottle. 1 hour before serving: the wine balances out a little beforehand, the dominant bitterness fades to integrate into a more coherent whole. Whites from Martins cellar : Intensity medium(+). Lemon, orange candy, almond, nuts, glue, paint thinner, caramel. Acidity medium. Finish medium(+). Not sure just where to put this. The wine improved with time, but somehow it seemed to under perform compared to expectations. Perhaps give it another try to find out whether this was just a poor botlle, a poor vintage, or a poor wine.

Initially this showed a lot of chemical notes (paint thinner), but then came to show nectarine, nuts, butter, oak, apricot, marmelade, caramel. Medium acidity, medium finish 100% Marsanne. One of the weaker Hermitage wines I had from Chapoutier. Potentially too olf, although it should be able to age for quite a while

On the palate beautiful tension, pressure and energy. High 14% abv very well balanced, medium acidity. Fine floral and bitter notes. Creamy texture, deep, very good balance. A good showing for this wine but there is absolutely room for improvement through age. Still youthful, with citrus and melon flavors and big and rich and round in the mouth. My score might be conservative. Exotic nose with tropical fruits. Hold if you can keep your hands off of it!

Wines with Paul and friends : Popped and poured. Similar impression to the ‘15 Le Meal that I had a couple of years ago. Superb tension and intensity despite the rounder texture that was true to its origins. Some almond notes with pure, driven citrus fruit. Incredibly youthful for its age given the premox record with this producer. The whites are truly great wines unlike the reds.

A wine that was "lost" in a corner of a cellar and stored in good but far from optimal conditions, this was surprisingly tasty on night one but it was dead by night two. Characteristic Northern Rhone white, with deep yellow color, obvious oxidation, white peach aromas and an intense peach / nectarine pit flavor. Good acid, succulent, round, full bodied. I am sure that this would have been much better if younger and stored properly. Decent QPR.

Friday Wine Group - JL (Blind Lunch) : Tasted Blind - golden in color, high viscosity in the glass. Nose of slight lemon, and even slighter honey. Nose was not strong. Creamy mouth feel, acidic and dry, maybe a little hot. But subtle flavors of white fruit and lemon, and ever so slight honey. I guessed a southern Rhone around 10 years old, with a condrieu as my second guess. Close.

Golden yellow, bright and clear; Logan-lychee fruit, pineapple rind, awesome purity of slightly bitter, stunning concentration but not overdone, sappy, lots of dry extract, sort of oily, but incredibly light on its feet. finish is juicy and slightly phenolically bitter at the same time. The nose initially says white burgundy, but the mouth says marsanne loud and clear with a lovely honeydew wash and slightly russet apple highlights. A cool, somewhat savory minerality lingers for quite a while. So natural with flaky white fish. Quality stuff!

Blinds before MH's advanced exam (Home (Noe st)) : (blind) Pale yellow in the glass. Dry Moderate aromatics - earthy and waxy. Mushroom. Lees. Slight reduction. Almond - slight oxidized nuttiness. Slight oak on the palate. Dry, medium plus alcohol, medium acid, bitterness - phenolic. Slight impression of new oak - mostly used. diminished acid, neutral, and slight oak: N Rhone marsanne-roussane. This smells and tastes familiar - It's the Chapoutier Crozes-H blanc, isn't it. Yep.

Golden yellow-green color. Sweet honey notes on the nose with a bit of lemon, but you really have to put your nose in the glass. Bitter honey with lemon and a very strong mineral core. Notes of banana peel as well.

Truly spectacular and meant for those who want a vinous carnival ride, not a food wine. Incredibly long, bursting with layers of intense flavors- beginning with tropical fruits which gain in strength but are quickly overwhelmed by a granite/stone wave which lasts for about 10 seconds. You need to spend time with this beauty to find it's true face. Evolved from bitter to creamy, then to mineral, next comes oaky, goes to burgundy Montrachet, then super sweet. Stopped there and put nitrogen in, will try more next day, hope more in coming. Keeps evolving and the experience was superb. Definitely give it high score due to the complexity and beautiful evolving path.

Consumed at our backyard party, so detailed notes not taken, but this was very enjoyable with stone fruits, fresh herbs, and minerals on the nose and palate, and there was a pleasant, lightly viscous mouthfeel that was luscious and very nice in the mouth. Chinese Dinner in L.A. (Elite Chinese Restaurant - Los Angeles, CA) : Oily, rich, and young. Was thinking this could be a bit blowsy or awkward as young Hermitage blancs can be, but this was balanced and surprisingly light on its feet. Nice honey, salt, and lemon oil notes on the palate with nice acidity. Great stuff.
