There was some sticky residue under the capsule with hinted at some leakage, but the wine was sound. Dark brown, "tea-like" in color with some glints of orange. Showstopping palate impact. So much sweetness, but perfectly buffered with lip-pursing acidity. Almost painful intensity with crazy length. I kept shaking my head at the layers of flavor being hurled at me. Wow.

Michael Broadbent has rated 6,000 of the best wines on a 5-star scale. And only 27 of them he gave 6 stars. This is one of them. 99p from Neal Martin. Made just 5 times in 100 years. Deep brown coffee color. Aromas of fig, peach, dried apricots, caramel, spice, wax, honey. Very sweet, probably >300. Yes, color is brown and sugar is high, but that concentration and intensity is just incredible.

Besoin d’air? Bouteille usée? A lire d’autres …

93-94 Almost brown in colour, the nose is amazingly complex, the texture is almost like syrup, there is still some acidity to balance that richness that is almost too much, and the sugar is wow, but it is still …

Dark brown-orange. Beautiful nose of apricots, molasses, some citrus peel and tropicals, tea, mandarins-marmalade. This reminds me of the great MC HGS wines. Parallel evolution. Wow. Amazing on the palate. Super sweet with amazing persimmon, rich and lively, tangerine and figs. Great acid on the finish. Sweet. Brown spices and molasses. Just great. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5.5-6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 19-19.5/20.

Don't listen to Seth, it's better than 98 points. ;-). Criticizing this wine is like criticizing Hedy Lamarr as not being the perfect woman because a perfect woman would have sold her spread-spectrum invention to the navy after she invented it. An insane color of dark tea, as if ten tea bags had been left to soak overnight. A glycerin feel of motor oil is only enhanced by the dark colors. The expected apricot gives way to underlying notes of …

Very tertiary, full of resiny apricot, golden raisin, peach, and caramel. I like mature Vouvray and this is terrific - but it lacks some of the freshness to really propel it to the level of top Vouvrays.

Biryani night (Chicago, IL) : This is as legendary as I thought it would be. This has an extremely (almost unpleasant) dark brown colour, the sticky thickness of syrup, and a multifaceted nose that goes from tart candied citrus, dried stone fruits, and figs all the way to marmalade and burnt sugar. Incredibly complex, but as with all the other legendary wines I've had, there is this precise definition in all of those flavours. This is so sweet it sticks …

10Y Weekend (Day 1) (Søllerød Kro) : Simply a true legendary wine. So much depth and intensity and still extremely young. Could just as easily have been 100p.

Paul & Keith’s Old World v New World Chardonnay Challenge (La Trompette, London) : Blind. Mid brown. Thinning at the edges. Nose and palate very Rivesaltes-like. Raisins sweetness with a sense of oxidation. ***

Break-fast at Alan & Lehna's. To ensure a sweet new year we cracked open a 375ml of this liquid gold. Always a showstopper this bottle was no exception. I could talk about the amazing color, about as dark as a white wine can be or the amazing aromas of golden raisins, taiglach, apricots, prunes and a million more aromas or the perfect balance or the high but balanced acidity that almost had me thinking about an '89 Huet Cuvée Constance …

Dark and intense, with a kaleidoscopic array of flavors running from the brightest, lightest fruit to something dark and raisin like. This is a wonderful sweet wine, with plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and lively. It's not as ethereal as the Huet Cuvee Constance, but it is, at the risk of a cliche, it is more "hedonistic". Absolutely fantastic.

Extended Anniversary weekend. Dinner at Fearrington House. Our first time with this wine from 375ml. The half bottles must have been an afterthought as the label said 75cl crossed out with 3 red lines and 375ml written above it. Certainly nothing that would be acceptable to the ATF for normal importation into the US! The smaller format seems to have no effect on the glacial aging curve of this tremendous wine. Dark amber as always and beautifully balanced. A very …

A night of stellar wines from Vouvray, Germany and Alsace. (Fuleen Seafood House) : As far as I can recall, I've never had this legend though I do own a few bottles of it. I was thrilled when Jeff mentioned he was bringing a bottle. Despite extremely high expectations, this wine lived up to the hype. Just a thrilling wine! Deeply ambered, though Foreau's sweet '90s were all pretty dark shortly after release. You can smell the sweetness. The nose …

Loire based dinner at Fuleen Seafood, Chinatown, NYC w/ Brad Kane and several others. A perfect wine to end a perfect evening. From 750 it was the first time with this wine for almost everyone around the table so I was happy i brought it. Dark & deep red amber in color as usual. A huge nose of apricots and exotic fruits. Extremely youthful for a 23 year old wine as this is aging at a glacial pace. Very sweet …

Dinner at Steve & Barb's house. The evening's showstopper as it always is! Dark impenetrable amber in color. This is a very tough wine to describe in mere words. It really needs to be experienced firsthand to fully appreciate what is going on. Continuing to taste very young and evolving glacially. This wine will be a marvel for anyone lucky enough to drink it in the 22nd century. Since I won't be around then I'll do my part to make …

Steve & Barb's house. Opened to celebrate and wish for a sweet new year ( Jewish New Year ). The color of Dena's Mexican Opal. This is a wine that grabs everyone's attention immediately due to the color but the uninitiated have no idea of what is in store for them when they drink the wine. Truly a wine that has to be tasted to be believed as words in a tasting note can not due it justice. Apples, peaches, …
