First TN on this wine in over 8 years, but I am a believer that the '01s at all pradikats are just hitting their stride. At nearly 20 years old, this bottle had significant ullage and signs of past seepage. Likely a victim of overfilling, as this bottle had lain quietly in my temperature-controlled underground cellar since release. Despite the poor fill, and mold on the outer cork, the inner seal appeared intact and the wine showed no signs of …

A nice wine. Could have been someone else's standard riesling Just not enough depth of flavor me for.

2001 St. Urbans-Hof Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Spätlese, AP 329 290 015 02, 8.5 pabv, $19/750 ml, Village Corner, Ann Arbor, MI. HB Wine Merchants, New York, NY. Cork-finished with a good plug of fungus on top of the worn capsule. The cork was pushed about 2 mm. Light copper-green. Starts with a good blast of petrol, which melds into a grilled-lime note, with still hints of peach and a dust of mint. Pineapple, verbena; a good grip of limy bitterness …

Annual spring reisling wine, paired w/ roast local pork tenderloin & root vegetables. Pours a pale yellow, light straw color. Extreme levels of oil and petrol on the nose, with a little butterscotch and melon. This bottle is a little effervescant and the laser like fruit I remember has receded some, leaving this slightly too acidic. The fruit that is there tends to the green apple side. This cork had the typical german over filling type mold under the capsule. …

Opens a pale chablis like straw color. Under capsule a hint of mold on the cork. Petrol funk and pineapple on the nose. Delicate crispness hammered with sweet molten syrup, candied green apple, lemon bar and chalkboard on the lasered finish. Warming brings out more tropical notes in the aroma and palate and it rounds out a bit. Minute carbonation detected. Consistent producer, rock solid choice for a riesling, especially in a dynamite vintage like '01. Two left from a …

Ideal age to consume this - the sulfur aromas blew of quickly leaving a very well balanced, vanilla scented riesling. Very fresh and pure with fruit being very fresh tasting. The wines character really comes out at this age rather than the bracing beverage this was 5 years ago.

TN: Wgt St. Urbans-Hof Oekonomirat Nik Weis, Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Spätlese, AP3 529 290 015 02; 8.5 pabv. $$18/750 ml; Champane's Wines, Warren, MI. Importer: HB Wine Merchant; NY, NY 10019 Cork was difficult to remove with Ah-So; never tried a screw on it. Slightly elevated capsule but the substantially-made cork was not pushed at all. Slight fungal growth on top of cork. Double-decanted. Quite a positive burnished copper with noticeable bittiness: not a surprise in a wine coming from …

Un-fricking-believable. Rock-quarry nose. Each taste of this is like getting smacked in the jaw by a giant fist made of stone.

Straw colored, with a bit of sulfer initially on the nose. Lots of pear and a bit of tropical fruit (pineapple?) on the nose as well. A bit of spritz early on. I found this to have more tart green apple to it than I expected, although the longer the bottle was open, the more the warmer citrus and pineapple fruit flavors began to become apparent. Plenty of slate as well. But what I'm missing is more roundness in the …

Tasted great last night with indian food--nice hints of honey with stronger pear/apple flavors, good sweetness without being cloying. Not quite as good on the 2nd day, though.
