Opened alongside a Normandie Eisen & Viljoen 2012. Pop n pour to test the waters, then put into a smaller decanter for 45 mins prior to drinking due to initial tannin requiring softening. Lush wine, 51% Malbec and 49% merlot. Black cherries, black and red plums, black olive and a little chocolate and vanilla. Super juicy, mouth filling, medium + bodied and super enjoyable, medium + finish. In a good space now.

More funk in this bottle than the previous, but presents a deep and sophisticated palate that impressed everyone at the table.

Great juice, with layers of complexity and nuance. Some earthy, smoky flavors, and outstanding balance. Very enjoyable.

Dark garnet red with lighter edges. Layered nose with damp forest floor, leather, dried spices and black currants. Medium tannins (6/10) and medium to medium plus bodied. Well integrated palate with truffles, leather, damp gravel, leaves, baking spices and cassis. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2022.

Bought this in 2014 at the winery, and I’m so stoked that it is showing so well. Deep but vibrant aromas of currants and plums, laced with lovely leather, black pepper, soy, tobacco, mint, coffee. Full-bodied with vibrant acidity, velvety tannins, structured but rounded and woven together really well. Pure and vibrant with black cherry, dark currant, blueberry, tangy plums, laced with tons of pepper, dried leaves, clove, menthol, leather, soy. Complex and lovely but vibrant, still. Lots of time …

This was in a great place. Juicy but with some degree of complexity and good length. Great black and red fruit, thyme and mocha with a hint of tomato sauce.

One of the few bottles of Vilafonte that I drunk and I felt it was completely integrated. Definitely a wine for a long long cellaring! Beautifull, classy, intense powerfull, bright red fruits, cassis, so rich, powerfull but elegant. It completely took over the show. The Pichon Lalande 01 was shy close to this.

This wine went through a number of brief phases as it opened up. The initial "smells like wine" phase; the "oh, bring the funk" phase (which was sadly brief: then the "big smoothie, oh daddy" phase (which was the longest phase). I'd call opening this wine, at this time, a successful thing. For sure. OH Daddy!

Popped and poured. Could have done with a decant. Beautifully balanced with tons of power still. High medium body. Good tannins 7/10. Integrated together. The cab franc comes through powerfully. This still has a few years in it.

C: Garnet red that is deep and dark in the middle. N: Started off a little dirty and with some bell peppers. Slight blackberries too. P: Moderate Tannins (6/10) and moderate plus body. Lots of cassis and black currants. Some black cherries too. Rich, powerful and thick. A light herbaceous in the finish. Moderate plus finish. Silky till the very dry finish. O: Beautiful wine, well integrated and everything is fitting well together. Very dry and long finish. Drink till …

Suprised this held up so well. Strong notes of oak but handled well by mature, dark fruit and forest floor. Would compare well to some Margaux.

South African Wine + Surf Trip; 5/17/2014-6/1/2014 (Western Cape, South Africa) : Dark ruby colored. The aromas are deep and contemplative, evolving quite a lot over the half-hour tasting. Great tannic structure, but the tannins are sanded down so the mouthfeel is creamy, complemented by fresh acid. The black cherry and blueberry fruit is pure and voluptuous. I get complex notes of cola, cedar, dried leaves, charcoal and baking spices. The wine is long, full and complex, and the mouthfeel …

Alcohol and stewed fruits are balanced by some juniper herbal notes and damp earth. Equally good with food or on its own. Solid acid and oak structure. Dry finish with just a reminder of cranberries. Very good.

This was a bottle that was forgotten. Did not like the C Series but this bottle of M was actually very good after breathing in the glass for 45 minutes. Has a bretty undertone that I really like. Fruit was still very prominent. Nice flavor for a surprise bottle of 2004 South African wine. I would buy if I saw again.

Delicious. Tastes like you are drinking wine out of a melting hot brick with brick dust. Aside from the heat, I love the mix of new world and old. Think David Ramey in Graves. Ripe fruit, tannins, structure, balance. 91+.

Decanted for 3 hours. This wine is a true gem. Red fruits on the nose with some spice. Medium Palate. Luscious and decadent red fruits & spices. Very well integrated tannins. Very lengthy finish. I did not have high expectations for this but it turns out that this is one of those bottles that reminds me of why I put so much effort in aging and decanting. Excellent. Will seek out another great recent vintage.

Description: Deep dark ruby in colour with a medium+ intense nose. Positives: A rich complex wine featuring cedar, plums, bramble fruit, blueberry pie, cloves, anise, fennel, brett, dried sage, ripe papaya, espresso, cocoa, vanilla bean, tobacco leaves, bacon, black cherry & Christmas cake on the finish. Full body, good acidity and a very long length. Negatives: A little heat from the 14.5% alcohol. Interesting Things: Decant for an hour and the 2004 is showing better than the 2006. (See my …

This wine has really come into it's own at his time. Nose of wet earth and dark fruits which come through on the mouth. The tannins have mellowed into a smooth richness.... Had with a t-bone and roasted tatos on the grill... Life is good :).

Powerful spice, herb, cedar forest and dark fruit scent with a little heat. Juicy, round, smooth, blueberry, blackberry, tar, mint and coffee flavors with ample fine tannins. Thrilled that this bottle was much better than the last two and more like the first one that I drank.

Popped and poured. Deep purple/garnet hue. Dark, plummy fruits and dried berries lead way to aromas of forest floor, leather, and cedar, along with hints of smoke and brett, the latter of which is interestingly juxtaposed by a note of minerals. The brett seemingly subsides with air to leave an aromatic profile akin to a left bank Bordeaux from a riper vintage (2003 St. Estephe?). Expressive notes of blackberry, black cherry, currant, anise, dried herbs, coffee, and an impression of …
