Strawberries and balsamic... More robust than the other gran reserva bottling. Many many years left on this.

Such a pleasure. Richly-flavored with ripe red fruit, herbs, a bit of chocolate on the finish, beautifully balanced, still very vibrant. Delicious with a rack of lamb. Last of my '01s; will need to wait awhile on my '06s.

Just like the last bottle, I find this exceptionally good. That said, it is young and needs some attention. Opened 2 hours before dinner, the first pour was overwhelmingly full of oak/pickle spice. A splash in a decanter and 20 minutes did wonders. Deep red fruits emerge and integrate into a complex mix. Should last and improve for ages. Traditional and exciting. (93+)

Fabulous wine and QPR. Old school Rioja that is full of American oak / dill and layers of medium bodied, red fruits. Still youthful, this under the radar wine would fit right in with the big boys of Rioja. Should continue to drink well for 20+ years. A wonderful upside surprise. Crush nailed this recommendation - just wish I bought more. (94+)

Gorgeous traditionally-styled Rioja. The oak doesn't intrude in the least.

This is ridiculously drinkable. The nose is fresh with a hint of old spices. Straight out of the bottle it is juicy with a nice acidity; didn't at all feel like it is a 16 year old bottle. With air, it mellowed down, shed a bit of fruit, acquired depth and gravitas; but still very light on its feet. There is the ghost of sweet vanilla, not at all intrusive. I really liked this wine. Perfect for the wintry January …

Gorgeous nose, at first its all curing tobacco, fresh, complex, and nuanced then gains mushroom, mineral, and old wood spice notes with building raspberry/dried cherry fruit and hints of mint, green cardamom, and cured pork. Supple and bright in the mouth with juicy fruit but lacking the intensity of the nose. Lots of subtle tobacco shifts to mineral with dusty tannin on the moderately long strawberry jam tinged finish, Definitely gaining complexity with air, though remaining transparent and with tannins …

Good wine with good concentration and complex aromatics. The fruit is still rich and dominant. It's accompanied by earthy notes of herbs and mushroom. The character of balsamic acidity isn't as strong as I've encountered with R. Lopez de Heredia and La Rioja Alta, but it's clearly present.

Brief notes since I have a head cold but this seemed firmly traditional, showing lots of sweet aromatic wood notes, plum and leather, leaning somewhere towards Heredia but cleaner - no funk or volatility. Tasty, a producer to follow.

At Viaggio. Decanted 2 hours+. Initially, cool blue fruit. Lots of structure and depth. Later it spoke more of Bordeaux than Rioja. Impressive in that but not what I was looking for.

Still a dark maroon eye. Somewhat translucent. Nice maturing nose that is almost becoming Bordeaux like - mix of damp forest and light baking spices. Red and darker red fruits join in the palate. Tannins starting to resolve and leaving a balanced mouthfeel before a medium ++ finish. Overall seeming to be entering maturity and prime drinking window in a classy fashion.

Plum, black cherry, cocoa, leather, earthy herbs, and toasted coconut. Smooth on the palate with ripe tannins. I think there is some good acidity underneath and could age very well. But very yummy right now.

Beer/wine tasting at the Frog and the Peach, with J&E. We must have had perfect timing on this one. Beautiful nose of red fruits and mushroom. Palate had almost no tannin but just a hint of age. Tasted from more than one bottle. WOTN.

So smooth, silky and graceful, with a texture like a nice Chambolle. Strawberry and cranberry fruit, with the requisite oak spice of classic Riojas, but not out-and-out overt oakiness. Quite soft and I question if this will age well, as the apparent acidity is low, but this is certainly drinking great right now.

Vineyards are along the Alta/Alavesa border; calcareous clay soil; 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, 2% Garnacha. Garnet color with orange rim. PNP, but watched it evolve over a couple hours. Chilled it a bit to about 62 degrees to start (warmed to room temperature eventually). Licorice, cherry, blackberry, earth, leather, smoke, cedar, cloves, hint of barnyard. Medium+ acidity, high mellow tannins, medium+ body. Moderately long finish dominated by tart cherry, smoke, lingering tannins. An earthy, smoky, fairly smooth Reserva. Nice complexity, …

This seemed to me closer in style to the reserva than to the gran reserva. It feels essentially unstructured, no noticeable tannin and a fruit profile already showing maturity with a leathery, tawny tinge. It's very smooth and scratches the itch if you're looking for something with a little development but not at the wow level of others I've had from Pecina. The GR will be the one you want in the cellar I think.

5 hr decant. Brick red with hints of orange. Translucent in small pours but not fully translucent. Mature, substantial to the eye. Nice nose of sweet oak on initial open, but developed caramel and slight mushroom odor with time. Light plum joins on the palate. Nice balance leads to a long velvety finish. Overall a very enjoyable Rioja that seemed loaded with extra energy. Can't help but compare to LDH 2001 that I have more experience with. To me, LDH …
