This bottled was purchased at the estate last year; double-decanted earlier in the day and enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 1982 “Il Poggio” Riserva pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. 2024-07 PST (Italian Group) Tuscany at The Rec (The Recreation) : Tasted blind. Mature nose. A bit of bottle stink which blew off. Good fruit, smacking tannin, great acid, really tart red cherry coming our with time. Tannins growing with time in the glass. Raspberry coming out. Really good. Sangiovese study, Volume II (Chicago, IL) : Dark fruit, with a distinct iron tone. Meaty and rustic, somewhat reminiscent of what old Clape could do. Lots of tannic power and still plenty of dark fruit here. Very convincing sangiovese of a decidedly different style from the other wines tonight.

We had it before with Italian wines: when you think they are over the hill, decant them and you could be in for a surprise! Beautiful color of subdued red with medium orange edges. Powerful nose of dark fruits, smoke, leather, earth. Smooth, fine tannins, lots of acidity, very long flavors finishing with hints of brandy and, unfortunately, a slight sour taste that reminded us it was 30 years old and which kept this from being rated even higher! This was the new Yellow label from the recently released batch from the winery's stock.

Interesting bottle from educational point of view. Who could have thought Chianti will be alive and drinking well in 30 years? Nothing earth shattering, probably not worth the price paid, but still interesting and thought provoking.

FBM brought over. Had with pheasant. Beautiful ruby color. Wine went through several stages. Very smooth and rich, with good fruit right after the pop. 20-25 minutes later, significant tannins began to take over. These blew off with another 20 minutes or so in the glass. A nice wine, and the only "experiment" bottle that was drinkable.

Last of the bottles I purchased at auction, and least interesting. Least amount of fruit, most bricked and most simple flavor profile. Little fruit, mostly earth with little spice, this improved over 10 minutes, plateaued for 20-30, then crashed sharply over the next 15 minutes.

Far better than the previous bottle from last year. This still had more fruit - interesting smoky cherry flavors on the palate. Secondary flavors included both mushroom and cedar. although this was more interesting and complete than the prior bottle, it also started falling apart after open approximately 45 minutes.
