Very old nose, rusty and bloody, no real fruit left, palate is a bit fresher, steely, good structure still.

Dinner with Eric and Family (London) : 1964 Filippo Sobrero Barolo DOCG: Pale browning, almost like an aged Tavel rosé. Fairly sharp volatility with a paint stripper note that overtakes all else on the nose. The palate is better with firm tannins and notes of liquorice, dried rose petals, sweet molasses, and aged balsamic vinegar wit a touch of caramel. Despite its faded state, there is still some complexity present, but it is overshadowed by the high VA and the …

Fantastic! Everything still there!! Still som fruit, well balanced with nice acidity and with a complexity that only great vintages can have. What a surprise! Also crystal clear without any discolorations or larger precipitates. What a lovely old Barolo.

I've had a number of these over the years, and this was not a good example. The bottle was in great shape, fill reasonably high, and the cork in great shape. But the wine was tired with no complexity to the fruit. It had the very light color of old Barolo, but was missing the tannins and red fruit that should have been there. It was sound and not oxidized - just tired.

Delicious - very mature and smooth. Initially, I thought I had waited too long but the bottle seemed to resurrect itself over the next 30 minutes or so.

Ben and Wendy Goldberg's post Festa dinner Double decanted in the AM The color of Tavel rose. Dried rose petals. Some caramel, still with an acid streak keeping this quite faded wine alive, barely.

Post Festa Dinner at Hearth Mature, but less so than many of the bottles this night. Still autumnal with redder fruits, some beef broth, porcinis, and some decaying leaves. This does have a nice tension and sense of depth and precision I really like. Lovely and fading. 89

Lost Thursday Wine Lunch - Blacksalt (Blacksalt, Washington DC) : According to Amy, this is now Monprivato. Very sound brick color, light cherry, chestnut, grilled steak, raw mushroom, tar, rose, roasted chestnut, damp forest floor, earth and a hint of VA. Medium concentration, a hint of red cherry driven palate impression, good acidity and mineral presence, medium finish that ends quite earthy. Quite shy but quite youthful. I prefer a bit more fruit to support very tertiary expression but YMMV. …

I wonder if the delicacy of this wine was more due to the vineyard source (partly or fully Monprivato) or the vintage? Double-decanted leaving a wine of brilliant, translucent color. 5 hours later, it hit its stride. Highly perfumed with the little body it needed to be both crystalline and caressing, the texture integrating with the taste's chalkiness; the wine's quiet aspect. Meanwhile, a louder cherry and cinnamon taste and smell. As the wine evolved, menthol and cola-chinato, then wood …

Coffee, prune, oxidation, just awful upon opening, good color though. 8 hours later this has performed an admirable turnaround, a glimpse of fruit, a little oxidation, some volatility remains, sappy, tar, caramel, good freshness and amazingly still a modicum of tannin. Fun to drink, and impressive to see a wine recover like this but not a great wine by any stretch.

Serious funk and oxidation upon cork removal, but, as expected, all of that was gone after 2 hours in decanter. Still holding a med>med+ ruby core, no real sign of age. And while the acids and tannins are performing in line (i.e. quite well) with other well-grown 64s, the fruit on this is beginning to fade. The lighter side of medium-bodied now, with early notes of prunes and raisins ultimately giving way to calcareous soil and red berries after some …

Refined and tasty package of aged Barolo features, black tea, tar, rose water. Long and lingering, this bottle lives up to the reputation of the vintage. Some rate the -64 above the -61, Renato Ratti gives the -64 5/5 and Wasserman's Italy's Noble Wines (Second Edition 1991) regards the -64 "perhaps the best of the decade". According to INW Angelo Gaja considers the -64 overrated. My votes go for the -64 (not that anyone's probably interested).

Cloudy (dediment) brown hue but wonderful Nebbiolo bouquet and nice fruit and balance on the palate. Wine evolved in the glass. Very nice for a very old wine.

Tasting of Italy by the DRC-club (Brugweg - Velp) : The wine appeared completely "over the hill" at first, but later it "resurrected". But very hard to judge. So no rating.
