Dark ruby-garnet core. Lots of pencil shavings on the nose, mixed with dark plum. Dry, with balanced acidity and soft tannins. Medium-bodied, with long length. The fruit is intact; plum and cassis, swaddled in French oak and pencil shavings. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this: the structure is solid and the wine no doubt has a long life ahead. Just missing that je ne sais quoi that would make this stand out.

Upon opening the nose showed a slight funk which quickly blew away. The nose and palate were closed immediately after opening, but an hour of slow-ox was all it took for both to unfurl. Think well-aged Bordeaux with cocoa, charcoal, balsalmic, chocolate, currants, and a little maple sugar. While the palate was enticing this bottle was all about the finish, which seemed to roll on for minutes. If you have a bottle you've got a wonderful choice in front of …

Disappointing. Not up to past bottles. Have no clue......it has been well stored. Other current reviewers are having a better experience.

Gorgeous St. Julien in full maturity. Fabulous pencil shavings, tobacco, and cedar notes. It has a touch forest floor. Some volatility adds further depth. Supple palate, blackcurrant, iron ore, incredibly fragrant nose. Quite tannic. This is great Bordeaux that goes down like water. Feels like a nod to old school Bordeaux in this vintage. Will this improve? I’m not sure, but it will certainly develop and follow an interesting path. Clearly vin de garde.

Deep ruby/garnet, pronounced, blueberry, toast, white pepper, cigar, prune, cedar, wet stone, savory, mushroom, game. Medium+ acid, high tannins, fully body, long finish. An outstanding wine from a vintage that is really drinking well, especially the wines below the First Growths. Drink now or hold for some additional development. 40% primary, 60% tertiary.

Outstanding across the board. Dark fruits, nice secondary stuff like tar and graphite going on, long finish. Amazing to compare against the ‘99 LP as well, which was a bit more austere.

Lovely mature Bordeaux. Tannins were integrated and ready after a 3 hour decant. Was open for hours and it lasted so this has many more years but I don’t think it is getting better.

Drinking well and also seems like there is upside. I have one more bottle and plan to let it rest for 10 years to see how this shows at thirty five.

Decanted. There is still a crimson tinge to the medium ruby colour, with brick-red flanks. Cabernet-based, clearly, with all the initial cassis on the nose. Minor lead pencil, cigar box and florals are there too. The mouth is reserved and poised, but with a good depth of savoury flavour combining nicely with the sweetness of the cassis. At two hours, I had the feeling that this was starting to dry-up, but this impression was fleeting, as I didn't experience it …

Blackberry, anise, truffle, bay leaf and dark cherries, with a slight mint nuance. Masculine and yet is buttressed, with grainy tannins and a very polished middle. The finish echoes on for some time. The body is full, but the elegance is undeniable; there’s a floral element on both the nose and palate throughout. This is one of my favorites from this classic chateau - up there with ‘03, ‘10, ‘16 and ‘19. An adolescent, the cellar beckons. Drink 2030 -.

The fruit has slipped into its autumnal register: blackcurrant preserves and dried blackberry edged with fig skin and plum pit, carried on a savory weave of cigar wrapper, graphite dust and old cedar chest. Secondary notes unfurl slowly — leather polished smooth by years of use, damp earth after rain, a trace of bay leaf and clove — less about spectacle than resonance. On the palate, it moves with calm authority. The structure is fully resolved, tannins fine and powdery, …

Grand Bordeaux Tasting: Left Bank (K&L Wine Merchants, Hollywood) : Deep ruby color, bright tones. Aromas of black currant, fresh blackberry, five spice, cedar, anise, violet, and black tea. Finessed and expressed throughout the palate, with black fruit flavors seamlessly integrated with tea, iron, leather, and floral secondary depth. Expansive density, elegant, fine and full. Cool-toned acidity with fine, silky tannins accenting melted stone minerality. Long, saturating finish, full length. A blockbuster. WOTF-1

Left Bank Bordeaux (K&L Wines, San Francisco) : Deep ruby throughout. Nose of oak and perfumey herbs. Medium to full bodied and you definitely feel the oak. Deep, lush, concentrated ripe red and black fruit with a strong olive component. Harmonious entry and mid-palate which is then brought to a halt by an astringent, tannic finish. This wine has a classic Cabernet profile, is pretty massive, and is nowhere near being ready.

Jason's St Julien Dinner (Noizé, London) : Deep garnet core, narrow rim. Red abd black berry fruit on this one, touch of smoke, vanilla oak but well integrated. Perhaps a touch lactic. Medium/full bodied, supple with ripe blackcurrant fruit, spice, some creaminess, fresh acids, good length harmonious finish. Harmonious and balanced, drinking well, excellent.

Jason’s Langoa, Leoville P & Leoville B 96/01/02 (Noizé) : Mid ruby. Nicely mellow nose, ever so slightly lactic against a background of cedar and sandlewood. Darker and more savoury again. Good energy on the finish. ****

Jason's Langoa-Poyferré-Barton showdown (Noizé, London) : The most energetic of the three, just like the last flight, with an indulgent crowd-pleasing richness that is refined rather than big and brash. It's so good.... Everything about this screams class and pedigree. Red and black fruit join forces with an underlying spicy matrix of fine tannins that merely tickle before the fruit compote comes back to remind you what went into this. This is heady stuff. Jason's Langoa B vs Leoville Poyferré vs Léoville Barton - 1996, 2001 and 2002 Dinner (Noizé, London) : Brighter red fruits here; oak playing a more supporting role that on the '96. Heady summer greenhouse / tomato leaf / basil on the nose. Touch of incense and baking spices too. Palate has glossy but controlled fruits on entry, some delicate tea tannins build through the mid palate, the finish is savoury with a lovely peppery red fruit character.

HDH: Tasting the Top 2000 Vintage Bordeaux Reds (Four Seasons - Chicago IL) : Walkaround tasting, all open 3-4 hours in advance and double decanted. Very approachable and interesting already, this has quite the personality. Its (6%?) Cab Franc really shines through with a gamy element, and overall this has lots of charm. Good already now.

A good wine for sure but not near the level of the bottle consumed a few years ago. Feels a bit overdone and undernourished at the same time. Ripe black fruit, seaweed and swamp inform the nose. Medium bodied with a fruit forward attack that fades quickly leaving structure and a touch of bitterness. Ash. To me Poyferre fell off a bit after the 1996. Will be interesting to try some more recent examples. (90)

Very good, at times classic, but with hints of overextraction. Rather dense, even with a decent decant, the black fruits are concentrated and vigorous. Texturally rather sturdy, there is just a touch of creaminess, followed by the some rather sappy tannins. In some ways this feels like it needs more time, but I'm not sure everything will come together perfectly.

3rd of 24, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, much less of a fruit bomb than 4 years ago and unresolved tannin much more apparent as is greater layering to the fruit in this still adolescent wine, nice touch of sweetish black cherry and plum (from Merlot I imagine) in the mid palate makes this relatively easy drinking against the more classicly austere LLC and LB, much upside and likely upgrade when this eventually reaches full maturity, 25+ years. …

Pnp'd into a decanter for about a 15 min double decant prior to dinner with Rich & Lisa. Medium garnet in the glass. Classic Bdx nose notes of graphite, leather, a hint of mushroom but no barnyard. This is def a food wine. It's lighter in both fruit power and weight in the mouth. It's the perfect accompaniment to Rich's perfectly made short ribs. I suspect this gets no better from here on out. In a very nice place right now. A bit reticent on the nose initially. Superfine tannins with a great mouthfeel. Entering secondary development but plenty of freshness left. 16x Bordeaux 2000 : A few observations: 1) It is a very good vintage, but in terms of aromatic depth and layered complexity, it does not reach the level of Bordeaux’s truly great years. 2) The wines have clearly progressed over the past five years. What was once true mainly for the Right Bank, with more openness and approachability, now applies to most Left Bank wines as well. 3) Tertiary aromas are still rare. While the wines are more accessible …

No detailed notes. This came out of the gates hot: Good complexity and precision centered around a fine red berry and cherry core. Easily drinking on a 93pts level as the structure was fine and the wine fresh. Only with time the fruit got a bit too ripe and sugary. This can be drank now, no need to wait any longer.

Tasted on the second day - layered and expressive with dried fruits, prune, black currant, black cherry, and hints of figs. There’s quite some tertiary notes of graphite and lead on the finish, with silky tannins and oak that is fully integrated. Compared to two nights ago, this is more elegant, with vibrant fruit, a full body, and a long, lingering finish. Among the three Leoville estates in Saint-Julien, I find Poyferre the most approachable and enjoyable early on—it’s easily …

Excellent showing of this underestimated 2006 coming as a big surprise. The wine was as good as the 2003 Comtesse which I had two days ago. PnP, enjoyed over 3 hours. Tasted blind next to the 2002. A darker cherry fruit but with elements of blueberries. Aging notes of tobacco, fine leather. The palate has a decent amount structural tannin with sumptuous texture. This is nicely aged, but still feels young. Only just entering the drinking window it seems. I had a slight preference for the more feminine 2002.
