From Magnum, very sexy, opulent in your face nose of blackberry, blueberry, cassis, spice, vanilla, soft integrated tannins, lacking a little in backbone (especially in comparison to the 2005 Pontet Canet tasted alongside it), but so seductive who could complain

A little disappointing. Decanted for two hours. Nose was great. Truffles black fruit mint, alcohol. Very primary On the palette, just way too much alcohol. Fruit was stewed, and no depth. Was hoping the truffles might be brett, but no. Medium acidity and some tannins still present. Mid pallette weight was still solid. With high expectations comes disappointment.

The wine is still drinking exceptionally well. Gave it an hour of decant and it blossomed beautifully. Yes it’s nearing its end, and likely won’t get better, but it remains an amazing pour. Subtle and refined with hints of cherry, vanilla, and chocolate. Full bodied but the tannins are fully integrated, making for a terrific taste after all these years.

Loved this bottle, toyed with rating it higher before deciding that it was peaking and this is really the "terminal value." Still has a very bold medium/dark purple color in the glass, strong fragrances right off the bat. Thought about decanting, decided against, and it was right call. Wonderful fruit forward nose of intense cassis, blueberry marmalade, black currant, followed by a nicely placed whiff of tobacco leaf. Agree with some of the other reviewers that this is more Rhone …

This wine just seems to be getting better and better over the past year. Decanted this for 1 hour and drank over the next 2. The nose after 3 hours of air was filled with blueberry pie, chocolate, sage, and a touch of vanilla. This pours a very dark red to almost black - big legs in the glass. The palate is very rich, full bodied, tannins are still quite strong and present, but have mellowed out a bit from …

This is my second time around having this bottle and it is better then I remember. I highly recommend decanting this and filtering it because there was a decent amount of sediment present. The nose is expressive - ripe currant, blackberries, chocolate, wet gravel, and some hints of licorice. The palate is medium bodied, rich, and with a velvet like smoothness. The tannins are perfectly integrated and are soft and smooth. The finish is long with hints of refreshing red …

Surprised this was not a good pairing with Porterhouse steak dinner, but was great with some dark chocolate after dinner. Big flavors that dominate.

During a vertical tasting, flight one 07-09. well managed Napa CabSav. Richer than the Mekerea but still good balance. Notes of dark fruit, spices. The 05 and 11 had the edge with their composed balance. The 07 was dead with alcoholic, oxidative notes.

Melka Estates Tasting (Napa Grill, Zurich) : Big Melka Estates tasting with various wines produced by Philippe and Cherie Melka, both present at the event, including the largest Jumping Goat vertical to date. Selected notes of the winemaker comments included in the tasting story. All wines we tasted showed a European inspired handwriting (Graves, Rhone valley) especially for older vintages with later vintages (2012- 2014) coming across quite heavy on the extraction. But with most scores in the 91-94 range …

Wow, what happened here ? Why 2 months ago I thought the wine was incredible and today I thought that it was 1 or 2 years past its peak ? I have drank dozens of this beautiful wine and today was a slight dissapointment because my expectations were very very high. Only one sigle recomendation : if you have a few left in your cellar drink them up this year. The wine was good, but it was nowhere near as …

Powerful wine. Still could go for a few years. Black red in colour. Burnt caramel nose with a bit of graphite that tickles your nostrils. Black currants and liquorice, and again a graphite finish. Silky smooth and beautifully balanced. I like this wine a lot.

Was really excited to try this wine and a big fan of Melka. Really nice composed wine, balanced, has depth, complexity, decent finish. Brought this wine to a Greek restaurant and paired with beef kabob, and this wine worked really well with it. It started off rather slow and closed down, but after 1 hour it really started to open up and show its depth and complexity which makes be believe that at least 1 hour decant is necessary. Also, …

I am to my very last bottle of Metisse 05. I have drank about 25 bottles of this wine and over and over I say that it is my #1 wine in the world. Yes, 2005 is over, I cannot continue to drink this forever, but it has been a wonderful trip in the last 8-10 years or so. So, today I drank my before last bottle of Metisse 05 with my family. I had a waygu ribeye and drank …

The alcohol was a bit forward upon opening. So I would let open a bit, but feel the wine could still be cellered for another year or two. A well rounded wine.

Nice dark fruit, with subtle spices over a long finish. Mature now, began to fade a bit by the end of the night. Drink, don’t hold.

Decanted for 5 hours. On the nose, black truffles and pencil shavings. Great acidity and life left as one would expect of Melkas wines, with dominant funky truffle and dark blackberry fruit. The earlier coffee notes have disappeared. Great wine with many years left.

Deep garnet. Full body. Long legs. Tobacco, Red fruits, in a very good place right now. Prime drinking window. A bit chalky. It smells like cranberry, gooseberry and red currant. It tastes like strawberry jam, violet, light toast and coffee.

Wow fruit just jumps out of the glass with currants, plums and blackberries. Then in the mouth there is a slow fade into earth and tobacco.

Great as always, although it is starting to go downhill. The prime time for this wine was 2 years ago. The wine is still great but it will not evolve anymore and I suspect 3-5 years life left. I still have a few bottles and I plan to drink them all in the next 12 months

Decanted, strained for sediment, and drank over three hours. Perfectly balanced wine. Shows more Bordeaux characteristics than CA cabernet. Earth balanced with fruit.

Based on other descriptions, I thought I was going to in awe, the reality was a little shy of that. I did only let it decant for about an hour, and I suspect it needed about 4, this is still just a baby with plenty of years still ahead .........

This wine is pure heaven. I wish I knew how to describe the smell of the wine but neither me or my 4 buddies knew how to describe it. It is by FAR the best smell in a wine I could wish for. The wine is nothing short of spectacular. Extremely balanced and silky....like silk. I would but 50 bottles tomorrow if I could find them. This is my #1 wine of all time....maybe followed by the great La Clémence …

The nose.....WOOOOOOOOOW, I don´t know how to describe it, it is just pure pleasure. This is by far the nicest nose I have ever had in a wine. The nose is worth a 100 points by itself. The wine is integrating beautifully, it is a wonderful wine. It tastes like a blend between California and Australia cabernet. The tanins are very sweet...delicious. Expect beautiful fruit. This is the wine that I will like to drink all my life if that …

A gorgeous bottle of Cabernet. Classic California Cabernet with a wonderful balance. It does have that vegetal almost green bell pepper quality to it, which I often find too strong in California Cab. However, in this case it's very slight and mixes well with the dark fruit characteristics of the wine. The tannins are soft and make the wine very enjoyable now. It was decanted but didn't sit and was immediately drinkable. I take that to mean it has probably …

I liked this wine, a nice surprise. The fruit didn't overwhelm me wit dark flavors but instead was a nice mix of something more black and red, a bit more subtle. There is a nice vanilla bean note that is woven through the wine and for me, it simply was fresh and delicious. Really nice bottle.

Popped and slo-oxed for 4 hours---but it needed a true decant. I recorked and took to the restaurant where it was popped and let sit for another hour. Huge full bodied black fruit driven monster. Tannins are pretty well resolved but more air would have rounded this out a lot as the last few sips in the bottle were much better than the overly syrupy stuff at the beginning!
