Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London) : Polished black fruits, slight sweet spice, berry, lifted; slight rose petal, peppercorn. Juicy, pretty but fair lick of alcohol warmth, grainy grip, fruit just about persists.

1h decant. Drank this 2008 two nights after the 2007 (my previous note). Surprisingly the nose appeared “older” than the 2007. Basically on black fruits, plum, black cherries. The “robe” was browner than 2007. The palate had more astringency and was not as long as expected. It was also less mineral and less leathery than the 2007. Decanted for half an hour. Pours more of a garnet than I expected from a 17 year old Hermitage. Smoked meat, over ripe black cherries, over ripe blueberries, church incense, black pepper, smoke, cinnamon, mushrooms and olives on the nose. Northern Rhone trip 2024; 5/14/2024-5/19/2024 : Made from 100% destemmed bunches. Aged in 80% oak, 20% concrete. Intensity medium. Blackberry jam, black cherry, plum, figs, coffee, chocolate, cigar box. Acidity medium(+). Tannins medium(+). Finish medium(+). Despite its age, it needs time in the decanter before pouring. Annual wine trip; Northern Rhone & Cote de Beaune with Bas; 5/14/2024-5/20/2024 (France) : [Tasting at Chapoutier, Tain l’Hermitage] Medium+ acidity on the nose. PnP and it took about 15 minutes for the VA to disappear. Coffee, raisins, chocolate, pepper, dades, ceder. Medium+ acidity, medium+ (integrated) tannins, long finish. Bacon and ash on the palate. Gets much, much better with air, this needs more time. 92-93+ 100% destemmed. 80% oak, 20% concrete for 18 months

I've tried 2 bottles from an OWC, and this wine feels very young still. You need 4-5 hours of decanting to let it open up. On 👃 ripe raspberries, almonds, walnut, some cigar box, some leather. Balanced taste of walnuts & muted ripe raspberries , light throat burn, short taste. This bottle should improve with more time.

Premium Rhône Tasting (K&L Wines, San Francisco) : Deep purple/ruby. Pungent green herbs, olive, and licorice on the nose. Rich, round, soil-filled attack with naturally sweet but not overripe fruit. Potent blackberry, creosote, and herbs with incredible layering and depth but no heaviness. Penetrating and persistent. Extremely impressive and has the look and feel of a 50 year wine.

Friday Blind Tasting $100+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA) : Cloudy violet crimson; mesquite, dove shit, wilted violets, a youthful intensity to the nose, plum and red fruit; nicely aged on the palate with a firmness to the tannins, nice complexity and drinking well, a very good example of why I like off-vintage N Rhone.

Eðalklúbburinn rúllar um Rónardalinn.; 5/23/2022-5/27/2022 (10 vínhús og ein súkkulaðigerð heimsótt í norður og suður Rónardalnum.) : Þarna var komin öldrun í lit. Hvass ilmur. Stollenkaka, rúsínur, vínlegnir þurrkaðir ávextir og niðursoðin kirsuber. Þægilegur en mjög dökkur ilmur. Ekki mikill ávöxtur á tungunni. En mikill ferskleiki og gríðarlega flott jafnvægi. þarna er fullt af svörtum pipar og einnig tóbak. Fágað og gríðarlega flott vín.

Popped and poured. This was delicious. Quite Burgundian in style. Blackberry, cherry, garrique, roast meat and spice this is shows terrific balance and elegance with the oak well integrated. This will not be a long lived wine but for now it’s drinking really well.

Le Pavillon Vertical (89, 92, 94, 99, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08): Nose of black fruits, cake, with floral tertiaries. Palate of black fruits, black tea, cured meat, iron, with cola tertiaries. Improved over the night and was popular amongst the 2000s bottles. The ingredients are there. Value buy compared to the other vintages. Keep away for 3-5 years.

Wines Worthy of a Somewhat Impromptu Celebration (21 Club, New York) : Two bottles purchased at a restaurant and given a quick decant. 2008 is not a vintage from which I've had much Rhone.
