From a coravin sample. Like the other '21 Sottimano crus I've tasted, this has a marvelous nose, flowers, spices, potting soil. This is beautiful wine, but has a touch more acidity than the other crus I've enjoyed. Still, the Cottá cru is my favorite for 21 Sottimano. 91/92

Park Place - Matsutaki Mushroom Dinner : Still youthful structure, with dark fruits and tar. Chewy. I like it.

Last tried in 2021, I distinctly remember how unforgiving the tannins were here. Fast forward to today, while the initial sip was very tannic - it mellowed out with 4 hours in the decanter. I still think this needs 5+ more years in the bottle, but if you must drink now - decant for 3+ hours and serve with food. This was far more rewarding this time around than last.

as others have posted, these tannins are not going anywhere. definitely a food wine. after a couple hours in the decanter, they softened a bit. The tannins will outlast the fruit, so drink over the next few years. a powerful Barbaresco to say the least

Agree with others that this wine is rich with tannins and probably needs at least 10 more years of age. I think it has the stuffings to be a solid wine for the next 3 decades.

Holy tannins, barely made a dent after 16 years. Pretty big aromatic nose of dried flowers. Very grippy on the palate with tart cherries and an excellent food wine. I don’t think the tannins will integrate much more with time so best to drink now as the fruit freshness lingers.

I fear the tannins may outlive the fruit in this wine. To be honest, there’s a strong possibility they’ll outlive our Sun, but I’ll put remaining bottles away for a while in the hope that I’m wrong and will be pleasantly surprised.

Gorgeous nose that explodes from the glass. Tannins have finally resolved to a nice place and this is drinking really well. Something that can be enjoyed for the next five years for sure, still with some upside potential.

All this wine needed to sort itself out was time. Lovely, floating reddish fruit (cherries, rosehip, even strawberries and a whiff of raspberries) intertwine with violet, orange acidity, herbs, forest floor and notes of tar/licorice. It ends with light, ringing minerality. There are still some tannins, but they’re ripe and characteristic for a nebbiolo, no feeling of woodiness. Will probably hold some years, but it’s so good now I woudn’t risk anything. For all you people who use points to …

Dark tobacco, been open a day, almost chocolate. Delicious all the same.

Still painfully young but still offers up an amazing aromatic profile of dark fruits, sage, rosemary and truffle (with the herbs especially vivid); very tannic still, and pretty austere, but hints of what this will become with a bit more time in bottle.

Dark. Floral and black fruit flavors. Medium bodied. More masculine styling. Young and rather tannic. Nice.

The 2004 of this was sensational, this one is "just" excellent-oustanding. This is a nebbiolo, no doubt. But if I had this blind I'd probably wind up in Serralunga rather than Barbaresco. The fruit is towards the darkish side, plums rather than strawberries. But there is a touch of rowanberries and rosehip in there, acidity is nice, there is also tobacco and tannins that have a touch of chocolate to them. In the 2004, the tannins were ripe, sweet and …

Have to say I was a little disappointed with this bottle. I don't have a ton of experience with aged Barbaresco, but I've enjoyed Sottimano more with less bottle age.

Decanted and poured, this wine displayed detailed and nuanced aromatics of tar, violet, black cherry and spice. The color is a tarnished medium to dark ruby. The medium bodied palate shows texture, balance and finesse. Tannins add grip to the finish. This drinks well now with decanting and some air time. It should benefit from 3 to 4 years of additional bottle age.

Piedmont Dinner with wines (home) : Very dark in color, almost purple in color. My notes similar to the previous bottle - this wine is still packed with dark fruit. There was an interesting earthy note in this bottle. Great balance. As Steffen says, very, very good still young Barbaresco.

Wine Evening chez Shannon and Dave : First wine of the evening and a winner right out of the gates. I love the primary flavors of rose, tar, and plum...loads of tobacco and some other dark fruit goodness. This is a really solid wine whose character is that much more interesting due to low oak influence. Very, very good young bottle of Barbaresco.

Dark clear purple in color (almost Barbera-like) with a slightly red rim; No signs of age other than it was less primary than when originally tasted at the winery. The initial aromas were very oaky. After it opened up it had spice, minerals and a bit of toast on the nose. This wine had very chewy tannins with good balance. It was heavier in weight than a lot of Barbarescos. The finish was long and distinctly classic Nebbiolo with cherries, …

Very dark for Nebbiolo with a ruby edge. No obvious signs of age. On day 1 it seems a bit closed but 2 hours in a decanter opens it up a bit. Lots of tannins and a powerful nose of chocolate. On day 2, the fruit is much more dominant with an irresistable and delicate bitterness. There is power in this wine, yet the nose is elegant and refined with notes of tea, roses and, yes, chocolate. Somehow the use …

Tasted at the winery on 6/8/04. The focus and stucture of all of the Sottimano wines was amazing. We already have the 01 Fausoni and purchased a case of this wine at the winery. It needs at least two more years before even an attempt to drink. The winemaker indicated that they feel the drinking window on their wines is 5-7 years post vintage. Sottimano was one of our best winery visits in Piedmont. 8/23/04 - I broke down and …

Located 5km from Cotta, this cru is 450m up the hill. The extremely poor soil makes for a more austere wine. Ruby/garnet colour; darker than the others. Very perfumed nose showing some austerity, but with aromas of minerals, red fruit, tobacco, and spice. Full-bodied with outstanding purity of juice. Black/red fruits, flowers, and spice showing on the palate. The spice lingers through to the long, long finish, ~60s. Outstanding.
