Guys this is READY. But like in all the best ways. Still rich dark fruit with chocolate and nutmeg. Ageing highlights the meaty characteristics Syrah is known for without sacrificing the fruit. The balance is beautiful.

Could go 92.5. Drinks like a big Napa cab. Smoother than most syrahs. Drank in Maui.

One word: Monolithic. My cab loving friend did not like it at all. I'm going to keep my bottles for another 5 years and see what happens.

Final bottle of one badass case enjoyed over the years. Have I experienced a better American red for $30 in the last decade? Perhaps nope. And it's certainly at a peak now. Enjoyable straight from the decanter without time. Huge complexity: violets, garrigue, smoke, moist forest floor, blackberry with its bit of tart. No off notes. Hedonistic but not overdone. Despite my personal preferences veering toward elegance, this bold American Syrah gets everything right at its price point. Everything. I'd …

Only one more left and I 'm going to miss it. Ripe and luscious, don't really notice the alcohol, quite good.

This has softened quite a bit. I doubt it will develop any more. Great floral notes with purple flowers and pepper tracking center stage. Drink in the next year or two.

Bodalicious. Something Charles Barkley would say. Very concentrated but not extracted dark fruit. About two ounces were left in the bottle and we went away for a week. Sat at room temperature. Still decent after all that time.

Jam packed with the goods. Nose of dark fruit, tree bark, and briny sea fog. Medium bodied but I was surprised how intense this hit the palate for being a wine without such heft. I usually only see this intensity from heavier bodied wines. Took an hour to really hit its stride. Mushrooms and forest floor along with black berries and salted plums went really well with our steak.

Damn son this 2013 Jaffurs petite sirah is a beast. Even after 7 years it can’t be tamed. Or maybe it can. Blue and black fruits. Dark as the night. Silky smooth with chalky tannins. Juicy and tangy acidity. Potent finish. What an amazing wine by a great producer!

A bit of old-world influence on this one: Black fruits on a meaty nose. A lighter body and style for a US syrah and a correspondingly more racy finish. Not too deep or complex...

I applaud BBENCZ's descriptors of beef blood and bacon fat. Yes. Strong and somewhat unorthodox flavors, but in a total package that I find very enjoyable despite the provocativeness. My wife concurs. Want something very big and good for $30, that stands up to hamburgers, barbecued sausage and/or brisket? This delivers.

Continues to improve with bottle age. Deep purple wine. Nose unremarkable. Big juicy fruit, still with some octane, but complex and enjoyable. Long finish.

My ratings are all over the place on this wine, so don't know if it's bottle variation or mood dependent. I was looking forward to this, but after a decant remained very dark and extracted. Not high alcohol or syrupy fruit, but a dense morass with little complexity. Finish stays with you.

My impressions of this, our last bottle, were similar to BBENCZ. The aromatic intensity is not quite as strong as I remember, but this is a great bottle of middle-aged syrah that is right in the zone for current drinking.

Same as the underperforming bottle. I guess there's some bottle variation with these guys. It did improve a tad on the second night but still paled in comparison.

What a special wine! Rich and robust, yet balanced, nuanced and complex. Flavors of red cherry, bacon, persimmon, plum, vanilla cream and mocha. Subtle and brooding, well integrated, polished and refined. A drinking pleasure from beginning to end.

An odd showing for this wine last night. We enjoyed it, but it came across as somewhat angular, with acid more prominent than usual and a nose that was dominated by an acetone smell for the first hour or so. I'll refrain from scoring and chalk it up to bottle variation.

Super lifted nose of bright purple flowers, candied lavendar, and dark berries. On the palate, there's a great savory beef blood component. Bacon fat, olive tapenade, a nutty quality as well. Very polished with no hard edges. Much better than the last bottle.

Big pepper violet nose. Sweet black raspberry with clove, pepper and anise. The clove really comes out about 2+ hours in. Drinkable now, but it feels like it will go another 10 years + Decant for 1-2 hours.

Drank this wine over the course of two nights. Inky black-purple, with blueberry and blackberry notes on nose and palate. Full-bodied, with smooth tannins. This will probably age for a long time, but is drinking very well now.

Always one of the best PS's coming out of CA. Almost black in color. Smokey raspberry nose. Chewy, complex, iron, cola, black fruits. Tangy acidity. Chalky at first, but settles with extended air. Little signs of alcohol even at 15% +. Signature wine for Jaffurs.

Keeps getting better... This wine has evolved rather quickly. Earlier on it was intensely jammy/fruity but one dimensional. This fruitiness is still apparent on the nose, but on the palette the complexity is really evolving nicely. Dark fruit is still present, but no longer dominating. It has layers of complexity with dark chocolate, coffee grounds and lots of black pepper. Its got a strong tannic backbone that is well integrated but finishes with characteristic puckering. Drinking at about 67 degrees …

2013 JAFFURS THOMPSON VINEYARD SANTA BARBARA COUNTY PETITE SIRAH- tasted blind; from the esteemed Thompson Vineyard also renown for other varietals including Syrah which is the best in their lineup of Syrahs that Jaffurs makes IMHO, this showcased all of the redeeming qualities of Petite Sirah with textbook violets, pepper and spice accenting the blueberry , plum and blackberry sweet and jammy fruit; it was full bodied, had layers of depth and held on for a long sustained finish

Dinner with friends (D & Ls) : One of the other guests brought this. He asked me what I thought and I said, great winery but let that rest for a decade. He said he had three and decided to open it. We gave it a vigorous decant into a water pitcher and then let it air for an hour or so. Inky purple in color. The nose has boysenberries, some graphite - very tight. Great texture. A wall of …

Still love this. I've been accused of inferior taste but this is a fruit bomb and I am drawn to that. Its a little hot. Modest tannins in this bottle, not a lot of complexity. But fruit for miles. Yum. I'm stocking up with a case for the long haul.

Exemplary petite sirah. PS has become my favorite wine - I particularly like full body coupled with dark jammy fruits. Strong tannins go with the territory and Jaffurs is no exception. Its an absolutely delicious wine and quite possibly the best petite sirah I've ever had. I'm going to order a bunch more of these, and will order the latest vintage directly from the winery as well. Near black in color, a wine of obvious extract upon swirling in the glass. Decanted for an hour. The nose was rather shy, only beginning to open up after another hour or so, offering up aromas of the deepest blackberries, plums and molasses. Teeth-staining and mouthcoating on the palate, with a rich, full mouthfeel and ample fine tannins. The wine is super young, monolithic and a tad tiring to drink at this stage. To me, it needs a good 2-3 …
