Chateau Duhart-Milon 4eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

It's taken longer than I expected, but this is finally opening up. Classic Pauillac aromas of cassis and cigar box, with hints of blueberry and dark cherry, then a smooth, restrained attack of blackcurrants, before a fairly rich seam of blackberry midpalate, and quite an intense finish which lingers pleasingly. Civilized and elegant, but with a depth it didn't have before, this has become very enjoyable. Probably still two or three years from peak.

4th Saturday Brown Bagger: Wines you Love (V&M's) : Blind. Dark red color with notes of iron, asphalt, black currants, herbs and graphite. Full-bodied, with medium tannins and flavors of black currants, mineral and graphite. As it opens in the glass it develops some red fruit qualities as well as bay leaf and sweet tobacco. This is the 3rd bottle or the 84 vintage I’ve had in the last 6 months and they’ve all been wonderful. Probably on the downhill slope of the bell curve but still a classic Pauillac Bordeaux. Tertiary notes dominate here with a prominent cigar box/tobacco leaf on the nose and palate as well as an earthiness and subtle hints of cedar and dried black fruits. A solid 88 points for a now 42 year old wine.

Decanted 3 hours ahead. Classy and quintessentially aromatic of the cool 2008 vintage. Beautiful bottle, Classic Pauillac. Early maturity. Purchased as futures and stored at 55 degrees. 92 points

My final bottle of this vintage. Opened but not decanted for over an hour before pouring. It is still drinking very well. Medium bodied with a medium + length finish. Elegant at 13+% alcohol. A nice mix of fruit, spice and tobacco notes.

This was very good, popped and poured at dinner but would’ve benefitted from decanting off the fine sediment. Plush and exuberant on the nose, it’s more elegant and lithe on the palate with good acid and nicely resolved tannins. Classic plum, cedar and tobacco, there’s still a solid foundation to keep this going although i’m not sure if it will get much better.

PnP through Coravin. Elegant and classic, showing dark fruit, earth, cedar, and a hint of tobacco. Smooth and balanced with that signature Pauillac charm. Enjoying life, good bottles never last long.

As with other 2023s from bottle, the tannins seem accentuated with what I describe as a “nice” steely aspect as opposed to an austere steely aspect. What makes it nice? The pure cassis, cool blueberry and kirsch aromas presaging the noticeable tannic frame in this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Lovely, mid weight classic bdx. Starting to move into early maturity. Elegant nuanced notes of cigar box and eucalyptus notes. Quite refined and stately. Palate little foursquare--but it's all there and plenty of depth. Rather fresh and crunchy for bdx, clearly showing the more savory higher acidity character of bdx. Might even come across as dilute compared to more recent vintages--but fans of classic 80-90's bdx will love this.

Finishing up the last third of the bottle from Friday night, which was kept under cork in the fridge for the last couple of days. Notes of red berries and plum, graphite, florals and iron. The palate has faded though, showing a little oxidation underneath the black currant fruit. That said, it is still quite drinkable and is filling in just fine with some cheese before dinner.

3rd Friday Group Tasting (J&J's) : Blind. Mild bricking with a crimson red core. Aromas of red berry fruit, plum, tobacco, iron and currants. Medium-bodied with softened tannins and flavors of black currants, No. 2 pencil, dried herbs and plum. Finishes with good length. Mid red. Good positive mature blackcurrant nose initially. This is so typical of a top producer's effort in a poor year. Most boxes are ticked but the fruit and ripeness is just not there. It is a two dimensional wine that starts to dry out quite early on.

1993 vintage

Didn't have time to review before dinner, so tasting notes provided much later. Only very slight bricking just starting to show around the rim, so it still appears quite youthful. Seemed the most interesting 2-3 hours after decanting. Classic Pauillac--cassis, blackberries, black cherries, blueberries, cedar, graphite, and even a little iodine-like quality (in a good way). Medium acidity, medium tannins that are prominent, but quite soft. Only 13% ABV, so very refreshing. Solid 92, but tempted to go 93 tonight.

Same bottle as Melvin. 7 years since last trying the 04 Duhart, and this is still showing well. Medium (-) body with nicely balanced dark fruit, earth and sous bois. Clearly a lighter and cooler vintage but I like 04 and well done. Got this right double blind as 04 left bank.

Fragment dining : My contribution. Perfect cork, very fresh such that most guessed as '08 or younger. Pavel managed to impressively nail this as a '04 left-bank; I have been consistently impressed by this producer's wines from this era for managing the balance between modern, svelte tannins and the restraint of old-school cassis fruit laced with pyrazines.

21-year-old Bordeaux. The lady of the house mentioned that the aromas were delicious. I was feeling a bit under the weather, so my sense of smell wasn’t at its best. I detected aromas of cassis, potting soil, and cherry. The flavours were juicy with smooth, melted tannins. Overall, the nose was the highlight of this wine.

My record with the 2008 Bordeaux vintage has ranged from good to exceptional (Lynch-Bages, also from Pauillac!). However on the last occasion this Duhart Milon seemed young and not ready, not last night. This was truly singing, and we were glad to have this as the grand vin of the dinner for 50th birthday boy MC! Classic Pauillac nose, cedar, pencil and blackberries. Color very dark and contained a lot of sediment. A bit to much iron and tannins compared to the remaining fruit. Restrained is a good word here. Perhaps a telltale for 2008.

Basic Bordeaux, a bit disappointing honestly. Not a great year but this should offer more. Nose is nice with typical flavors but taste is a bit dry and lacking length.

Almost black in the center and garnet with a slide orange tint in thin layers. This has been cellared in a warmer than textbook cellar reaching 19°C in summer, so it may show more evolution than textbook cellared examples. It shows a low to medium intense nose with some red fruit characteristics with hints of red currants. Pencil shavings, iodine. Elegant. On the palate with refreshing acidity and medium to high levels of smooth tannin. -2035+ 5/12/16/9

A fine, quite sturdy, even taut, claret, with well-structured blackcurrant fruit, some spicy oak (“cigar box”) and a good finish. Can be drunk now, but is some years from full maturity. From a half bottle.

An anniversary present. Good cork. Dark ruby, purple in the glass. Earliest hint of brick. Nose subdued, and even after 2 hours of decanting didn't open up. But wonderful dark fruit, great tannins, and length. Slight suggestion of smoke. Just delicious and not finished yet.

Medium-bodied, fresh, forward, soft, and creamy, the spicy, black with red currants with their sweet, and savory character are going to offer pleasure shortly after release. This '23 grand vin from Duhart-Milon was enjoyed on Day 2 of our En Primeur trip. Tasting notes of vine ripe yet elegant black fruits, almost bramble fruit like, sweet spice, fresh tobacco. 40 year old wine from a vintage the chateaux don't even talk about. Quite advanced but not without it's pleasures. Overall quite thin and watery, but some notes of pencil shavings, dried black currant, leather, earthy forest floor.

Opened the bottle and let it breathe for about 2 hours. Color was light ruby, tending to garnet. Nose showed some maturity, with hints of leather to complement the dark cherries and wood. Acidity was good, balancing the tannins (still quite grippy) well. Notes of wet forest floor, pencil shavings, cherries, black currants. I have been keeping that bottle for a long time. Although very nice wine, we felt it was on the descending slope, nut just a little. However, we appreaciated it quite a lot, very nice nose, but lacking a bit of roundness in the mouth, leaving just a hint of wanting more. Drink now.

Drank during Cornerstone Provenance Night Event with more than 30 wines tasting. Did not have enough time to take down notes and didn’t have proper wine glasses. In general, the wines are still drinking fine and have characteristics of old vintage wine; forest floor, some barnyard, spices, tea, hawthorn, toast. I only managed to use my own personal score to rate the wine.
