Martin Ray, Saratoga Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon, California

Opened this 23 year old wine for a 23 year old on his birthday. Cork was soft (broke on opening) but was dry on top and no oxidation. Wine drank beautifully but won't last much longer.

Bought this in an auction of supposedly vintage cabs (for way to much $$). This is the third bottle of the case, after having tried two other wines, one of which had gone bad. Had no expectations of this one given previous comments of this one being over the hill, but the Martin Ray actually surprised me as very drinkable, albeit certainly mature and past its prime. Very smooth, hints of cherry, plenty of fruit left.

Forgotten in my cellar until 7/20/12. Not sure it was ever special, but now just beginning to die. Have drunk 3 bottles (all identical) as a house wine. If you have any, drink up.

May have passed its prime. This was a $20 bottle from Trader Joes, but it may have had storage problems.

Olive and dust layered Cabernet. Good concentration and ripeness once your palate adapts to the dusty quality. More currant flavors emerged later. Rough finish.
