Tasted at Blandy’s Lodge: Decent entry level Madeira. Lacks complexity, depth of more-aged wines. Nice sweetness, orange flavors. Nothing great, but very quaffable.

From a 375ml bottle. On the nose orange peel, dried fruit, rancio and smoky/roasted notes. Full bodied, sweet and rich, showing orange peel, dried fruit, slightly nutty, rancio and smoky notes with firm balancing acidity. A very solid and good sweet madeira.

Competent entry level madeira. Lacks the subtlty and complexity of vintage juice - and of course, also the price tag. Nose is salty caramel, cocoa, walnuts and dried fruits. Palate is rich and sweet, vanilla and oak notes strong here. Citrus there too. Not blown away - but that's not the point here.

A really complex flavour profile of figs, caramel, a little bitter marmalade, chocolate, toffee, cream and demerara sugar. Spicy, sweet and unctuous with a fine length of finish. Perhaps a little more definition and lift were needed to make this even better. CHP 89 pts

Orange jam, banana bread, gingerbread. Whatever fruit notes there are here; they seem to be baked into bread. Also molasses, nutmeg, cinnamon and a very interesting cooked meat note. It reminds me of spiced rum. Full bodied with a pronounced intensity of both flavors and aromas.

Bottle is open for a week, brown colour, smells of almonds, raisins and smoke, light body, not overly sweet, in the mouth raisins and smoke, a little hot/spirituous, in the aftertaste raisins, a little bit of smoke and acidity, good length (30+ sec), nice Madeira, but nothing special.

MNB: Fortified Wines : (blind) Dark copper color. Explosive nose of chocolate-chip cookies. Slight RS - 10g, 17% alcohol (actually 19%), high+ acid - long (high TA), and log finish - dried dates. Given the high acid and extremely oxidative nature, I believe this is a Madeira. Conclusion: Dry Madeira - Sercial (or Verdelho) - 10 year. This is a very poor example - simple, austere for malmsey.

Med brown/ amber in color, mildly pronounced nose of raisins, caramel, butterscotch. Nice that there was no alcohol to overwhelm also. Palette was very pleasant with mild plus acidity to counter the toffee and fig notes . Not heavy or cloying at all with a medium finish. Nice entry level Madeira.

A rich in taste and aroma, with pronounced intensity and medium+ finish, delicate sweet wine; the sweetness is balanced with acidity; beeswax, dried fruits: raisins, apricot, some prune, figs; walnuts and roasted hazelnuts, caramel\burned sugar notes, milk cream chocolate, a bit of bitterness. Enjoyed every glass (kept the opened bottle for 3 weeks without to fall down).

Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira) : This paired with crème brulee - that is seriously good stuff.

Over dinner, no formal notes. Greyish-brown in colour. Sweeter nose, caramel, walnut, dried fruit, Christmas spices. On the palate quite sweet at first, but high acidity keeps it balanced. A bit flat and not overly complex or energetic. Mellow, smooth and quite long. 87-89

Sight: clear, star bright, yellow-gold, minimal (if any) rim variation Nose: alcohol, wood, dried fruits? Palate: dry (but this could just be the high acidity), full-bodied, dried orange, vanilla, maybe nuts?, high citric acidity, dried fruits initially (like other madeiras) but quickly swept away by acidity, vanilla (and maybe nuts) present in finish after acidity fades on palate, long finish

Dessert Wine Sight: Clear somewhat dull, garnet in color. (Reminiscent of cranberry juice in color.) Hints of brown or gold at edges. Slow to move legs (understandable given Scent: Very aromatic. Notes of dried fruits (esp. Raisins or dates) with hint of citrus (orange) peel. Also strong scent of alcohol (expected for Madeira) Taste: Quite sweep, full bodied (tasting with nose plugged reminds me of sweetened mouthwash). Hints of caramel? Tannins not really noticeable compared to acidity.Highly acid. Acids appear …

Great 'starter' malmsey. Lacking serious complexity or concentration. Still good value.

I was once lucky enough to enjoy a 100 year old Malmsey. That was years ago when such a treat was affordable. Here we only have a hint of that magnificence, but a wonderfully, representative suggestion. There's chocolate, nuts and raisins. Not much complexity but a lot of taste.

“Blandy Madeira”-Tasting in May 2014, Wine 4 (non-blind). The wine was mahogany in colour, with olive green edges. It offered orange peel, raisins, sweet corn, some caramel, earl grey tea, coffee, cocoa, nutty notes and rosemary on the developed nose. On the spicy palate the wine was very sweet, with raisins, some orange peel, caramel, tea, nuts, some milk coffee, cocoa, chocolate, rosemary and a herbal spiciness, paired with high acidity, moderate heat from the alcohol and incredible length. A …

Clear and bright, medium brown colour and dense legs. The nose is clean and fully developed, showing medium+ intensity aromas of raisins, prunes, caramel, brown sugar and cinnamon. The wine is sweet with a high refreshig acidity, high warm alcohol, medium+ body and medium+ intensity flavours of raisins, prunes, caramel, brown sugar and cinnamon. Long finish. It is a good quality wine with a good balance between sweetness and acidity and a lingering finish, but it could be more complex …

A complex and seductive nose of caramel, fig paste, quince, honeycomb and smoke. Rich and waxy on the palate, with honey, almond, quince and apricot flavors. Medium acid helps balance out the rich, caramel, marshmallow-roasting-over-the-coals sweetness of this Malmsey. For only five years of age, this stuff is really complex. Creamy but structured throughout.

Medium brown color Good expressive nose. Though it seems restrained or holding back in some way. It has a lot of chocolate, walnuts and coffee beans. I do feel the alcohol is peeping out just a bit. Of course rich in texture and piercing acidity. It is more toffee and caramel that dominates the palate, although it does have an almost unripe element, but it might be the acidity that is confusing me. It is a great wine - not …

In Vino Veritas Session 5 (MIT) : Dark orange-brown color. Very oxidized, dark a little nice bitter/spicyness. Strong, short, disjointed and underwhelming.
