Dog Point Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Marlborough

Starts off with some pine needle sap and menthol and expands with air. There are root vegetable and raspberry and cherry fruit notes. It has vinous sweetness and some savoury herbal tones. It is complex and gently meaty. Tannins are ripe and acidity moderate. Plenty going on here.

1/1. Screwcap. Pale/medium ruby. Nose quite peppery (white pepper), black and red cherry, touch of vanilla. Quite fragrant. Medium/full boided, quite fruit forward, red and black cherry again, touch of white pepper but not as prominent as on nose, soft, tactile tannins, moderate/fresh acids, good length, harmonious finish. Certainly approachable, but should improve. Excellent.

Vibrant cherry, plum and redcurrant flavours with a glossy texture and generous fruit. Still primary now but lots of depth of flavour and structure to age beautifully. Classy.

Blue fruits rather than red, blueberries (German clones? - in reality ~70% Dijon clones), cherries and plums only at the back. Pure and very fruit driven, elegant. Med bodied, soft and juicy tannins that grants the texture, Again blue fruit dominating, spiced oak, earthiness at the back. Lovely texture and already drinking well, perhaps slightly one dimensional for now. However, it gets increasingly elegant after 1.5 hours in the bottle, silky smooth and lots of florals. good potential.

90-91 Having got into wine properly about 3-4 years ago, bottles I've had for the longest time have started to mature (just in time for Christmas treats). 40% New French oak, 70% from one vineyard. Straight out of the gate this was expressive. Ripe plum fruit is tinged with spice. It is velvety and full with an intense and sweet core of fruit. Structural elements are gentle and sweet fruit flavours linger. There's a hint of coffee development.

Dark ruby colour. Ripe red fruit, mixed berries, strawberry, cherry, underbrush, some coffee, spices and quite a lot of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, with medium-level acidity, ripe tannin and very good length. Very creamy. Smoothly textured, balanced and quite delicious. Too ripe, oaky and creamy and lacking freshness for my liking, but quite intriguing even for someone who does not generally like the style. Clearly outstanding in its category.

Pinotpalooza (Carriageworks, Redfern) : Stalky, slight blood, meat, muted black fruit. juicy, savoury, black fruits and tannins are nicely balanced but the alcohol heat is intrusive on the finish. Hmm. 1/2 an hour in the fridge will help.

Coravin tasting. Lots of fruit on the nose. Quite ripe. Dark cherry. Some oak but balanced. Lovely on the palate. Some nice acidity and herbal notes. Complex. Quite Burgundy like actually. Very nice and lots of life left.

Coravin tasting. Followed a mature tasting 2014 Alsace Pinot. Nose is quite kiwi. Very ripe fruit, broad, some oak, very rich. Delicious. Mouth watering. On the palate, some beetroot and rich fruit with lovely oaky finish. This is top class although not entirely my style. I slightly prefer the Alsace actually. Quite sweet, definitely some residual sugar here. Very ripe. Obvious alcohol too. Maybe this is quite flattering but wonder if I would drink it for the night.

Deep cherry purple colour. Cherry, mulberry, blackberry, pepper, mint. Smooth flavour with some bitter tannin to finish. Medium plus body, fine dusty tannin. I’m not a Pinot drinker but this one is quite nice.

ripe plum and forest floor scents fill the glass, impressively balanced, shows blackberry, spice, dried cherry and mineral flavors, backed with supporting structure, slick tannin, complete and seamless, a relatively nice value pinot noir, went well with a rosemary chicken roast

Perfect storage at the Wine Society. Nice cherry but a little shy. All fruit at the moment. This is good but seems much younger than 8 years old. I think even a 2010 top Burgundy would be more advanced than this. It probably needs food. Very nice oak which is quite integrated. Very good but needs time or food.

Can't fault this, technically, really. It's super-precise, impressively structured and beautifully rounded. Highly competent, professional winemaking. It's so polished it's sort of unexciting. I like a bit of imperfection, of idiosyncrasy in my wines. It has a dark, concentrated, ruby colour, and the aromas are clean and focused. Two bottles selected from my cellar to enjoy with friends at my local wine club dinner. Chosen because I wanted to show a mature NZ pinot but needed the confidence it wouldn't be past its peak. It turned out to be the favourite red of the evening. My wife Liz took brief notes which say it had lovely balanced fruit, which developed into an earthy palate. Complex.

Opened and decanted 2 hours ahead of tasting. Light red colour, very clear. Plenty of red fruit berries on the nose and palate, reminds me of a summer pudding. Smooth and silky. Lengthy finish. Drinking well now, might keep a little longer.

Popped and poured. Ruby hue. Nose of violets, stone, red raspberry, fecund soil. Nice combination of weight and freshness on the palate, which featured red fruit and savory notes combined with earth and iron. Ample acidity and structured but nicely managed tannin,s, leading to a moderately-long finish of red, stony fruit. Balanced and nicely done, particularly for the price, but was just shy of exemplary.

Characteristically Kiwi. A rail of vibrant acidity carries lush raspberry and cherry notes from the nose to the finish. It's not at all candied or toffee-heavy, like some New World Pinots are. On the other hand, it lacks the spice, floral, and sandalwood notes that I often find so alluring in New World Pinots. In other words, it's solid, even refined, but not particularly sexy.

Definitely needs time to open up. Dark ruby color. Rich, floral nose of raspberry and some earth and a little flint. Palate shows a fair amount of fruity intensity, with classic strawberries and raspberries along with some cherries. Nice acidity that comes into balance after some air - a bit too dominant initially, but it really settles down. Tannins are in balance as well on the medium to long finish. Absolutely no bouquet for first 20 minutes; soft, seductive ultimately balanced entry and fine mouthfeel. Moderate intensity fruit, but beautifully balanced, sweet dark cherry. Cherry aromas bagan after 20 minutes; some swirling. Recently transported 800 miles so behaps a bit dormant, but very pleasant, suave, and balanced in the mouth; a good drink but a moderately intense, 3 year type pinot.
