Somewhat of a butter face wine. Lacking on the face value, but a rock solid body.

2017 vintage

Opened for about 1.5 hours before drinking. Underwhelming at best. Asleep or over the hill? Slightly better after a further couple of hours but still unimpressive

2010 vintage

Opened at 2pm for dinner drinking. Needed to be partially decanted but never really opened up fully. Still has a robust tannic structure. The next day this drank a lot better with finer tannins however never really displayed the chambolle like characteristics one would expect. I think I would give this wine a lot of air when next drinking. But ideally to give this at least 2-3 more years in cellar.

As others have pointed out prior to me, this is definitely right at the start of the drinking window. Absolutely warrants the descriptor of a 'baby Bonnes Mares', and wouldn't surprise me if the vines were located towards the Morey St Denis side of the appellation. Lovely nose, pure cherry, spice, energetic, lively with a good spine, beautiful classic Burg pot-pouri, more elegant than the Bertheau 2010 after it but strangely slightly darker in color. Excellent structure/balance, lift. Loved both of the Barthod and the Bertheau Charmes. Both in killer shape and drinking at or near their apex with many years to go. Duck House EWG

Just a little touch of mustiness but that only adds to thr carm of the nose. Palate is still grippy and youthful. Smells incredibly complex, beautiful, harmonious, just opened. Outstanding.

2010 vintage

Still fairly early on this one, started quite thin and tight, though a few hours open followed by a few hours in the decanter softened this to where it could be enjoyed, if still buttoned down...a good look at what is to come. Red-fruited, not so much spice or complexity at this point, five more years.

It was very tight at first but blossomed beautifully in the glass. There was a wealth of highly perfumed cherry and berry fruits but under containment of the wine’s stony structure. It had light florals and some flinty geological notes. It had such great detail and purity, and the finish fanned out and drove on.

great nose--red fruits (raspberry), dried flowers (rose, violet) with touch of pepper. not too grippy at all, but can use another few years in the bottle before it starts to enter a better drinking window.

1 day old sample from palfr2. Drank in Grassl Cru. Autumnal and savoury. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby going garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of pungent soil earth, leather, ginseng, dried cherry fruit. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), resolved tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavorus of savoury soil earth, sour dried cherries, tart cranberry, leather, spice, slight meatiness, touch of green undergrowth. Medium+ savoury finish. Home drinking Singapore. Nose of brambles and decay with green and leafy elements. There is a Campari quality to this. Quite autumnal with consistent bricking.Tannins well integrated and medium finish. No excess acidity considering the vintage characteristics. Finishes a bit aqueous (fresh with a positive lens) which also speaks to the underpowered nature of the vintage. Is now firmly in the drinking window based on this bottle.

Quite open knit, even considering the vintage. More evidence to enjoy 2017 now if the 1er Barthods are already hitting their stride…

Tightly wound and disjointed. Needs more time. Fruit is very subdued. Strong tannic spine that overtakes the fruit. I had this bottle 2-3 years ago and it was open for business. This time it was totally shut down.

Clear, red fruity and very delicate nose. Bright red fruit on the palate too, restrained elegance, dancing and lively acidity. Minimal smoky notes. Quite a demanding profile and very exciting. Great success!

Chambolle Musigny Les Charmes Vertical : Much grander than 2014 version, yet this still shares some common in terms of delicacy. Exquisite and multi-layered on both nose and palate.

A Chambolle + Champagne dinner : Small sample from a buddy after I couldn't make dinner. Remarkably similar to the '07 Charmes I had in Paris with surprisingly sweet, balsamic fruit; albeit more masculine than the Charmes. Quite autumnal compared to other more youthful 2010s that I’ve had. Acidity also stuck out a little unlike other more balanced 2010s.

Wines of Fourrier, Barthod, Groffier, Denis Mortet, Bachelet 1er and above : Side by side with the 2013, fruit purity and density was better, candied with excellent depth on the palate with grainy tannins.

The one with Fourriers, Barthods and Groffier (IT GWC) : Popped 6 hours before and poured into voss. Took a small pour to sample but didn’t like it one bit - felt overly extracted and backwards. Got better at dinner with bouquet and palate showing darker fruit profiles such as prunes, plums, violets and dark cherries. Good balance, good fruit concentration with good acid profile with firm tannins. I would give this more time in bottle to develop.

this bottle was quite closed compared to the previous drunk a year or so ago - would be inclined to leave the next for a few years

2006 vintage

this opened with a tinge of green, both on the palate and particularly on the nose - took a while to dissipate but did and left quite a tight but beautifully made wine - lovely balance to this and while it is certainly delicious now, it should improve with a bit more time

2010 vintage

Pop n' pour. Good out of the gate and much, much better with a few hours of air. Loads of power and concentration that initially manifest itself in a compact palate but lengthened and broadened with air. Eventually achieved the seamlessness that I enjoy in 2010 but it took some time to get their. A more reserved and not quite ready 2010. Upside from here.

Mainly black fruit (cassis, black cherries, red currant), starting sous-bois, salinity. This is a serious villages which entered its drinking window.

2006 vintage

Good, a solid B effort. A pretty red color not echoed on the nose or the palate. Dark fruits, an odd combination of damp and scorched earth, spicy, and a bit volatile on the nose. Conveys a sense of solidity and thickness while remaining a bit soft. If this had been a Chateauneuf, that flavor profile would have people whining about "hot, alcoholic mess," but, since this is Burgundy, we know it can't be.

Kiss of oak and sweet red berries on the nose, with hints of cinnamon & cedar. This is an elegant, classy, complex and old-school / soulful Burgundy. The acid is high, slightly tart but it does not impede the pleasure of the wine. Huckleberry, cherry, and tannin to go the distance, with a savory elegant finish. In the end, this wine closed up and the structure took over. It has a lot more to give and really needs another 5+ …

Fresh elegant nice spices etc still v young. Still red fruit showing. I was sadly feeling unwell during my visit to Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, so my tasting really did not do the wines justice. All were well very received by the rest of the group. Noting what was tasted here for my own records.

Mid ruby to garnet. Fragrant with some sous-bois developing, a little damp leaf and gentle autumnal fruit with a pinch of caramel. Brighter and leaner on the palate, relatively finely crystalline fruit and a decent line. Moderate length. ***1/2

Today more dark than red fruit, lots of soil and minerals, needed some air to wake up. During the evening the often observed Barthod typical changes of impressions and taste from the same glass of wine. Actually, I drink my Villages 2010 and keep the 1er Crus for a couple of years. 2009 1ers are open for business, 2010 needs 5 years more in my opinion.

Upon opening it was dark, earthy, and perhaps even a bit grumpy. An hour of air and this really woke up and became a more classic Chambolle that was brighter, more energetic. Even though some air helped this to come alive, it seems like it’s in the drinking window (but no rush).

Starting to get into its drinking window, still a bit tight and structured but offering good drinking pleasure none the less. A bit on the dark side of pinot with more mineral and earthy flavors coming to the forefront. It still has a good amount of fruit though, just not as much as your typical pinot based wine, for me this is a good thing as it gives complexity to the wine as well.

Drank alongside the 2010 Vogue CM. Classic Chambolle profile, and as you would expect from Barthod, a silky and elegant wine. A bit darker in profile than the Vogue. This is a touch shy on the nose compared to the more open Vogue. These wont fall apart and can be aged, but I don't see myself enjoying them any more in 5 years then I'm doing right now, so why wait?

Meals in France; 4/30/2022-5/6/2022 (France) : Complex array of red berries and cherries on both nose and palate, with good+ weight, better length, and a complex cornucopia of enticing textures. Very good to start, nearly great when finished. Upside from here.

Full of ripe black cherry with baritone earthy aromas and an appealing pinch of baking spice. Fairly substantial for a village wine with plenty of stuffing that should reward a few more years of cellaring, but no harm to enjoy now. Upside from here.

A mix of red and black fruit: cranberries and blackberries, the nose is very pure, on the palate lots of soil dominating the fruit, this evening a less spectacular showing.

What I love about Burgundy is you truly have the intersection of land and human. Leroy has a style. Dujac has a style. Chambolle has a style. Why do I love the Bathod wines so much? Very ripe, potentially overripe. Dark color, dark-fruited, not obvious Pinot. Develops tannins with air. Tastes like Merlot. Lacks precision and the sharp mark from the soil I usually find in Barthod’s wines. Disappointing. With Johnny and Dorthe at Bout du Monde in Beaune.

A gorgeous Musigny nose which was light and effortless. Very floral and ephemeral. Structured on the palate but could be a little longer.

On the nose an intoxicating mix of red and black fruit, some soil, on the palate again this mix, there are dark cherries, blackberries, raspberries and spicy elements (cloves). Incredibly good for a village wine. It is the purity which is amazing, not the power nor the length. I will wait before opening some of her 1er crus of the same vintage. PS: I used my Zalto Burgundy glass, which I find extremely precise.

The 2010 vintage is in general a fascinating mix of fruit on the slightly dark side, but with great balancing freshness. And the wines have been open and generous all the time. Delicate, fresh, with a nice earthy finish.
