La Fleur de Bouard Wine Dinner at Waterfall at UPOP (Atlanta, GA) : Attended a Chateau La Fleur de Bouard wine dinner at Waterfall at UPOP, with Sales Director Benjamin Pognant guiding us through the wines while Chef Donny Crock prepared a four-course pairing menu. Served side-by-side with 2014 Le Plus from magnum, paired with herb crusted beef tenderloin with roasted red skinned potatoes and haricot verts. The wine displayed notable green bell pepper notes alongside dark red fruit. The …

A week in Bordeaux (Mouton, Pontet Canet, D'Issan, Langoa & Leoville Barton, SHL, Arbo, Pavie, Fleur de Bouard, Cheval Blanc, VCC, Figeac); 5/21/2023-5/26/2023 (Left and Right banks of Bordeaux) : Tasted @ Chateau. Opened 45 min before our tasting. It's quite obvious they are targeting the American market (me!) with more extraction and longer barrel aging. This has a few years in the bottle and think that extra time has allowed it to mellow a bit and it's drinking quite …

Showing a much deeper color than the regular cuvee, the wine jumps up with flowers, smoke, licorice, cinnamon and truffle. Full-bodied, in fact dense, the tannins are ripe, lush and long. The fruit is perfectly ripe with a chocolate accent, and the sensual finish gets better and better as you continue enjoying the bottle. This needs up to a decade in the cellar before it is ready to explode.

Two dozen long-stemmed roses and a cup of cocoa, cherry blossoms, espresso, licorice and spice on the nose. Polished tannins, silky, lush, textures, freshness and vibrancy, the finish is all juicy, dark plums and even dark chocolate. Made from 100% Merlot and reaching 14.8% alcohol, the wine is aging in 100% new French oak.

What the hell? Over extracted. 15 percent alcohol, 100% Merlot and 100% new oak. So you get a vanilla mess here. And - as a friend told me - this can be a Napa Valley caricature. Not my cup of tea (or bottle of wine). I prefer the lower priced Fleur de Bouard.
