Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins Très Vieilles Vignes

Meaty and spiced start with rich combination of red and black cherry. Slightly firm in the middle, but otherwise very well balanced with a dense, intense finish. I’ve been on a good roll lately of 2014s that have retained their precocious fruit yumminess, and this is another example.

Red fruit, a little tart, but full and fresh, with some mineral flavors and plenty of acidity. Still a bit young, but quite nice.

Decanted one hour. Youthful and earthy Pommard that's still a bit closed but accessible and delicious. If you're an earth fan this is it.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty - New York NY) : Tasting, brief note. Slightly more black fruit vs red, but seems at least as much "Volnay" as classically Pommard. Very accessible and fun already, I would think this should be in its drinking window by 2020.

DIVA Burgundy Tasting (Maison Champy - Beaune) : Tasting, brief note. Floral start with bright fruit on both nose and palate. I thought it almost Volnay-like and found out the vineyard is on the Pommard/ Volnay border. Already nicely balanced and beguilingly friendly. Very good+ potential for its level.

Maison Champy Cellar Visit and Tasting (Beaune) : Barrel tasting at Champy. Also too reduced to fairly assess. Lots of high quality black fruit evident on the palate.
