Perhaps it needed more time, but over the course of the dinner, it did not show anything more than a good bottle of Aussie Chardonnay. Still got another bottle to try in 5 years. Let's see whether it will get better with some age.

Mature Penfolds Grange Dinner : Started off the night with something that was not Grange, but which was heralded by one of the attendees as the best that Australian Chardonnay has to offer. It really managed to live up to the billing. The nose was incredibly reductively, to the point where I think it was probably a bit too much for those who are interested in poise and balance. I like white wines that take a jackhammer to my senses, …

The Giaconda Experience (Estate Chardonnay Vertical '00 and '10 - '22) (Entrecote, Melbourne) : Giaconda Vertical 2000, 2010 - 2022. Leaner and a touch shorter than the other wines, though still in good balance. Reductive, matchstick. Stone fruits. Plenty of time remaining.

Beautiful complex nose, seems a lot younger than nine years old with a great core of fruit. Made in a reductive style (strong gun flint taste) but has the substance to pull it off. Many years left.

Top Chardonnay. Light green grass on initial palate that adds and doesn’t detract from the wine. I decanted this wine as it was a bit cold straight from the fridge and decanting warmed the wine and allowed the flavours and aroma to develop. Now a 9 year old wine that will continue to improve for another 10, 20 or more years. Light lemon as it hits your mouth. Subtle oak and honey flavours. Light white peach all swirling together. Had …

bit leaner and herbal than the usual offering from Giaconda. Interesting, and drinking well, but nothing to call your mum about.

A strong green grass nose and initial palate that detracts from the wine. Otherwise all the good stuff. Had with a some fresh lobster from Bass Strait.

(Blind tasting) Full and rich nose. Gun-powder reduction in spades. Apple, citrus and nuts combine for a very complete and satisfying nose. Gotta love the gun-powder! Coche-like. Fullish, very concentrated palate. Rich, balanced and with an impressive grip. Pure, classic, long, fat. All melded togther. Oak and orchard fruit and gun-powder in lovely combination. So good now, but can be cellared 5-10 more years. When revealed our group concluded that 2008 Yattarna had met its match. This wine was on …

BYO Homecoming : Blind. reduktiv med noe anannas, litt lav syre. Ble nok tatt for sent på kvelden. Er det noen som vanligvis lager bedre Chardonnay utenfor Burgund?

This is on its way with a long way to go, say 10 years , very oaky but that will change and age will bring on the fruit, could be 94 at peak judging on past old bottles

"Opened the evening with the 2013. Now on the 2015. Lighter colour then the 2013 . Many of the same flAvours. Maybe the extra 2 years make the 2013 better or maybe just a better wine. Still give the 2015 5 points. "

Looks a little wonky at first. Some oak and malo character but all a bit clunky and patched together. Time in the decanter helps a lot. The flinty, mealy thumbprint of this vineyard is upfront, looking a little reductive but not stinky. The fruit is vibrant and fresh, mostly primary, looking a little young overall. Some evidence of sappy oak. Textural, powerful palate with explosive length. Should age very well. Touch young for now but very enjoyable after about an …

Paul & Keith’s Old World v New World Chardonnay Challenge (La Trompette, London) : Blind. Guessed OW. A touch tropical on the nose, but more Burgundian on the palate. Oatmeal coming through. Very good. ****

Overpriced, phenolic and overrated. These are the descriptors that come to mind everytime I have Giaconda Chardonnay. A lot of winemaking artefact but lacks any real finesse or depth. Reductive nose of popcorn and butter but not much else after that. Out of five tasters all rated this as one of their least favourites in a blind tasting. Loads love it though.

Canberra, Beechworth & Rutherglen wine tour day two (Beechworth and Rutherglen) : Barrel sample. Pre-Malo, old oak. On the nose it's funky, cheesy and leesy over muted fruit. In the mouth there are flavours of lemon and peach with plentiful acidity and freshness.
