Still showing so well. Really a reference Riesling. The extract is really impressive and such purity and definition. Floral elements to go with the citrus and mineral notes. I don't see any evidence here of botrytis and attribute the hue to age and skin contact. Held up well in the bottle until day 2. No hurry to drink the remaining bottles. One of the best vintages for this wine? Just great

Light golden. Low pitched stone fruit aromas. Full and glycerine, marvelous dry peach and apple, very good acidity, and a long, soil-filled finish. In full bloom.

2007 vintage

This was gorgeous. These Ried Schütts are big-boned wines that need time, and this to my tastes had exactly the right amount. The wine is seamless, very long. The flavors are powerful - pineapple, apricot, that sort of thing - and laced with saline mineral notes and that incredible aged-riesling, almost foie gras essence layered on the finish. A real joy to drink.

Blossom, flowers and candy in the bouquet. On the palate a concentrated wine with flowers, minerals and ripe peach and pear. Good acidity and length. Too young, but a great future.

An Exploration of 2009 St. Emilions (plus a few bonuses) (Los Olivos, CA) : Non-blind. I was really impressed by this bottle, though its slightly cloudy appearance made me wary at first. This ticked all the boxes: acid, complexity, length. Lime and tropical fruits, plus a touch of chalky minerality.

My last. Crisp focussed apple, hints of aromatic fruit (esp pineapple) and a tad of citrus. Steely core minerality and a dry finish. Still excellent but distinctly lighter-weight than earlier outings suggesting to me that it is at the end of its plateau. Drink up over the next 12 months or so.

My last bottle sadly. Deep golden-yellow colour. Layered and complex on the nose - notes of herbs, yellow stone fruit, saffron, mint, hints of honey, crushed stones. On the palate quite powerful with lots of minerality, great acidity, generous fruit. Lingering, intense finish. Wonderful Riesling - no rush drinking up. 93-95

“Ten Years After” 2009 Dry Riesling Tasting (Private Location) : I always knew that the Ried Schütt Smaragd from Knoll is a very good wine but this 2009 was really on top of the game. What a wonderful nose with aniseed, green herbs and a beautiful touch of yellow stone fruit. Very fine and lean on the palate with a lot of tension, freshness and precision. Lot’s of citrus peel on the back end. What a wonderful wine.

Broadening out with added couple of years since last note. Ripe eating apple and lemon zest with steely mineral core. No hint of diesel. Nonetheless was grippier chilled directly from the fridge rather than after a few minutes in glass which suggests to me approaching end of plateau. Cutting my drink-by recommendation to 2020 (-2yrs). However: enjoy!

Popped and poured from a perfect bottle. Pale golden color. Complex, developing, intense nose with lots of ripe citrus fruit, mineral notes, herbs and freshness. Dense and deep, wonderful perfume! High, ripe, animating and perfectly integrated acidity. Lots of ripe citrus and Marille fruit. Very deep and dense, perfectly balanced, lots of extract, some botrytis, wonderful complexity. This is a very impressive, dry Riesling that was very hard to stop drinking. One of the best I can remember, though I don't drink Riesling so often. Incredibly good value at $31 on a closeout deal from Zachys.

Golden/yellow in colour, notes of herbs, saffron, minerality, a bit of sweetness on the nose. On the palate fresh, bright, mineral, powerful. Very long and persistent. A glorious bottle!

Ripe powerful tree fruit bracketed by a slightly tannic earthiness, from botrytis? The power and complexity is admirable, but it's just a little chunky. Drunk alongside the incredibly elegant 2010 Hirtzberger Hochrain, the lack of seamlessness through the midpalate becomes more noticeable. But this is still a very good wine in its own right.

Very musty and petrolly at first, but that mostly blows off after an hour. Ripe citrus fruit, nice foresty elements, good concentration, good acidity. Very nice but without being truly distinctive. I wanted some more oomph or some more minerality, or both.

Beautiful clean concentration of crisp apply riesling with touch of aromatics, citrus and refreshing minerality. Some viscosity but definitely in the dry bracket. Vibrant. In my view at its best although clearly has the time and structure to take on more mature diesel riesling characteristics etc if that's your thing. Excellent. 91?+. Will last 12 years from vintage easily.

Oh yes, a real Riesling beauty by Knoll, hard to beat the intensity of the wine, it is bursting with racy acidic citrus flavors, floral Riesling notes and a fine minerality, there is no hint of Botrytis which is rare for the Smaragd category; great wine that will hold for many, many years in a good cellar. - 93 points

Over dinner - no formal notes. Lovely golden/yellow in colour. Still lots of ripe stone fruit on the nose, some tropical notes. Slightly floral, mineral with some petrol notes. On the palate slightly off dry, rich with a lovely mouthfeel. Balanced, layered, elegant, very long. Excellent, but not quite as stunning as the bottle Emmerich Knoll Jr. brought along to a tasting in London last year. Maybe we should have given it more time. Plenty of life left in this …
