Still showing so well. Really a reference Riesling. The extract is really impressive and such purity and definition. Floral elements to go with the citrus and mineral notes. I don't see any evidence here of botrytis and attribute the hue to age and skin contact. Held up well in the bottle until day 2. No hurry to drink the remaining bottles. One of the best vintages for this wine? Just great

Light golden. Low pitched stone fruit aromas. Full and glycerine, marvelous dry peach and apple, very good acidity, and a long, soil-filled finish. In full bloom.

This was gorgeous. These Ried Schütts are big-boned wines that need time, and this to my tastes had exactly the right amount. The wine is seamless, very long. The flavors are powerful - pineapple, apricot, that sort of thing - and laced with saline mineral notes and that incredible aged-riesling, almost foie gras essence layered on the finish. A real joy to drink.

Blossom, flowers and candy in the bouquet. On the palate a concentrated wine with flowers, minerals and ripe peach and pear. Good acidity and length. Too young, but a great future.

Was ein Monument - was ein Wein. In diesem Anlauf ist sie da - die perfekte Flasche eines großen Wein aus einem top Jahrgang. Einfach nur grandios. All in. Alles drin. Habe es natürlich wieder für deutschen Riesling gehalten. 🤭 96+ Danke du Trollingerverächter

Dinner for four (Restaurant Schweizer's, Stuttgart) : Glass: Gabriel Universal My last and most likely my best bottle! Top fill level, perfect cork. Clear, medium golden color, still younger looking. With time and air the nose was getting almost spectacular: Yuzu, lemon, oily, smoke, crushed stones, clear fruit. Multi-layered, complex, super deep and simply beautiful. On the palate very fresh, precise with great tension and energy. Clear fruit, lemon, yuzu, hints of smoke, very mineral, almost no botrytis. Very long …

High-end mature Riesling (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein) : Glass: Schott Definition Universal Clear, deep golden-amber color. Clearly not a perfect bottle. Advanced nose with some burnt sugar, spices, botrytis. I had the chance to taste the remainder in parallel with the 1995 and after a day its is younger, fresher and with greater tension and clarity as the 1995. The length is unbelievable now! Very dense and creamy texture, mouth-coating without cloying. On day one around 92, day two more 95. …

An Exploration of 2009 St. Emilions (plus a few bonuses) (Los Olivos, CA) : Non-blind. I was really impressed by this bottle, though its slightly cloudy appearance made me wary at first. This ticked all the boxes: acid, complexity, length. Lime and tropical fruits, plus a touch of chalky minerality.

Glass: Zalto Bordeaux Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, deep golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Orange zests, some floral notes, ripe stone fruit. Deep, warm and concentrated. This is a wine you should enjoy with food (cheese, rich sauces etc.). Due to the warm vintage it is bold and partially hot. I enjoyed it with dinner, but later without food it showed the lack of acidity and the 13,5% abv were unpleasantly hot. Nevertheless it is …

Knoll Ried Schütt vertical + X (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein) : WTF! Second bottle flawed in this epic 1997 flight. Not corked, but heavily oxidized, lots of apple must only a shadow of its former glory. Arrrrghhhhhh....

Knoll Ried Schütt vertical + X (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein) : Perfect bottle and cork. Clear, youthful medium golden color. Very mineral, smoky nose with some fine caramel notes. On the palate very lean, fresh and precise. Fruit is gone, everything is about structure and minerality. Beautiful tension, depth and balance. Long. Wonderful experience! 91-92

A monument. And at the same time resting completely in itself. The most wonderful ripe peach one can imagine. Plus Apple and Meyer lemon. Just hints of tonka bean, vanilla, honey and petrol. All intervowen to the most harmonious oneness. Structure and softened acidity in perfect balance. Noble & Pure. Close to perfection.

First bottle out of a case. In excellent condition other than the labels falling off. The hue shows a little color intensity, indicative of both the age and surely some skin contact in this wine. The aromas are both incredibly intense and complex, suggesting low yieilds and a high degree of ripeness. The nose shows opulent candied citrus fruit and a multitude of spices. There is enough acidity to keep the wine bright and fresh. The palate shows an amazing …

Medium yellow. Highly aromatic-petrol, herbal distillate, and stone fruit behind it. Full bodied but not oily with glycerine giving an early (false) impression of sweetness. Dry stone fruit and guava, fantastic finish of soil > acidity in beautiful proportion. More of this to get through confinement, please!! Maybe even more tropical the second night, but no less concentration, freshness, or soil

My last. Crisp focussed apple, hints of aromatic fruit (esp pineapple) and a tad of citrus. Steely core minerality and a dry finish. Still excellent but distinctly lighter-weight than earlier outings suggesting to me that it is at the end of its plateau. Drink up over the next 12 months or so.

“Ten Years After” 2009 Dry Riesling Tasting (Private Location) : I always knew that the Ried Schütt Smaragd from Knoll is a very good wine but this 2009 was really on top of the game. What a wonderful nose with aniseed, green herbs and a beautiful touch of yellow stone fruit. Very fine and lean on the palate with a lot of tension, freshness and precision. Lot’s of citrus peel on the back end. What a wonderful wine.

Broadening out with added couple of years since last note. Ripe eating apple and lemon zest with steely mineral core. No hint of diesel. Nonetheless was grippier chilled directly from the fridge rather than after a few minutes in glass which suggests to me approaching end of plateau. Cutting my drink-by recommendation to 2020 (-2yrs). However: enjoy!

Ripe powerful tree fruit bracketed by a slightly tannic earthiness, from botrytis? The power and complexity is admirable, but it's just a little chunky. Drunk alongside the incredibly elegant 2010 Hirtzberger Hochrain, the lack of seamlessness through the midpalate becomes more noticeable. But this is still a very good wine in its own right.

Very musty and petrolly at first, but that mostly blows off after an hour. Ripe citrus fruit, nice foresty elements, good concentration, good acidity. Very nice but without being truly distinctive. I wanted some more oomph or some more minerality, or both.

Beautiful clean concentration of crisp apply riesling with touch of aromatics, citrus and refreshing minerality. Some viscosity but definitely in the dry bracket. Vibrant. In my view at its best although clearly has the time and structure to take on more mature diesel riesling characteristics etc if that's your thing. Excellent. 91?+. Will last 12 years from vintage easily.

Oh yes, a real Riesling beauty by Knoll, hard to beat the intensity of the wine, it is bursting with racy acidic citrus flavors, floral Riesling notes and a fine minerality, there is no hint of Botrytis which is rare for the Smaragd category; great wine that will hold for many, many years in a good cellar. - 93 points

On the palate slightly off dry, rich with a lovely mouthfeel. Balanced, layered, elegant, very long.
