Tonight I was rummaging through the cellar looking for a couple wines that I haven't tasted recently. Stabbed with the Coravin. Blackberry, mushroom, a little oak. Finishes with grippy tannins and a bitter licorice note. Improves markedly with air. Likely better with some robust tapas--chorizo with white beans and garlic, stuffed peppers, and the like. The tannins are winning the battle against the fruit, and that's not likely to change. Tasted alongside a 2022 Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla Silver …

What a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting this 2008 Termes to be drinking so beautifully, but it's absolutely in its prime right now. The fruit is still vibrant and present, complemented by lovely earthy undertones that add complexity. The tannins have resolved perfectly—silky and integrated—and the finish is impressively long. This is hitting its sweet spot and showing exactly why patience with quality wine pays off. Drinking superbly now.

Tasted alongside a 2018 Bodega Numanthia Toro Numanthia. Stabbed with the Coravin. I last tasted this wine 4/16/25 (87 pts), and noted that I’d never tried it against its older sibling Numanthia. So here goes. Initially a subtle musty TCA note on the nose that thankfully blew off with air. Dark cherries, ash, light oak, and some licorice like the Numanthia. Lighter in style than the Numanthia in terms of fruit, as would be expected. But the tannins are more …

Two+ years on from previous tasting. Not quite as good as in 2023, but still drinking well. Mainly tertiary flavours, tar, earth, cedar, farmyard. Maybe still a little blackberry. Three left and will try to drink up in the next year or two.

I've had a half-dozen bottles of this wine previously, and was surprised that I'd not written a note. Stabbed this one with the Coravin. Noticeably more purple-hued than the 2021 Bodegas Juan Gil Red Blend tasted alongside it (different grapes of course). Aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, and light oak. Soft and round in the mouth, but then the tannins make a pronounced appearance. Neither bad nor flawed, but ultimately out of balance, with fading fruit. Would benefit with food. Suitable …

15% abv. Rich and ripe with a lot of tannin. Prominent alcohol as well. Getting close to being "over-the-top" - I'm sure some would find it to be. For me, this was enjoyable for a glass or two, but became ponderous. It went well enough with a hearty meal of grilled NY strip steak and wedge potatoes.

Deep dark and a body that our Renaissance friends would have called voluptuous. A great wine for food, deep and almost brooding, very full bodied but no harsh notes from tannins to speak of, needs to be decanted. It is good now, but feel that this one still has legs for another decade.

Opened and decanted 2 hours. Big, tannic and syrupy. Did not improve dramatically with air. Not a fan, don't understand the hype.

Not my style I guess but this wine had a slightly sulfur taste which did not dissipate even with several hours of breathing. Slightly peppery and medium finish . It was a bargain at Costco but probably will not purchase again

So, I don't always write notes about wines, but this one kind of was getting in my head and I thought I should do so on it because it was a bottle pretty much buried in long term storage for some reason, and I assumed well past it's window, but it turned out to be a bit of a conundrum. As it turns out maybe CT Forum pal forceberry had a similar circumstance about one year ago. I had several …

100% Tinta del Toro aka. Tempranillo, Aged for 16 months in second use barriques. 14,5% alcohol. Luminous, somewhat translucent black cherry color that is still surprisingly youthful for the age. The nose feels fragrant sweetish and slightly evolved with aromas of black cherries and perfumed floral nuances, some boysenberries, a little bit of dried figs, light blueberry tones, a lifted hint of ethery VA, a developed touch of meat stew and a whiff of mocha oak. The wine feels rich, …

Cork was dry and broke but the wine was fresh and delightful, dark color, good fruit, smooth tannins, low acid but balanced with some complexity, drank with paella with chicken, chorizo, shrimp and steamer clams, easy drinking, 14.5% abv, onto another vintage, a decent value, wine could have become grapey but it never did.

This was surprisingly nice and not as over oaked/manufactured as I expected. Still it’s full bodied and like most Numanthia it’s geared to Napa Cabernet fans. Dark plum, blackberry, charred/smokey earth and a good helping of oak. I’d easily buy again at $17.

Unfortunately this was corked. Cork fell apart on way out and had a musty bandaid smell. Tried decanting overnight and TCA smell is still there, though interestingly not so much in the taste (tried a small sample). Still though, the wine is way off and poured down drain. This bottle was free, included with a large order.

Deep ruby. On the nose esp at first there was a pleasant gamey smell, like a butcher’s shop. Also black fruit and thyme. There’s been plenty of time but the tannins aren’t very smooth I don’t think this will continue to evolve in the bottle at this point. Sturdy wine but new world oriented and a bit of a fight.

Beau produit!

A nice and powerful wine. Popped, decanted, and poured. The wine is quite drinkable, but should have decanted for a longer time. Notes of blackberries, violets, and cracked pepper. Dark purple in color. Made from the Tinta de Toro grape, which the label refers to as the “blackest of black grapes”. Medium to full bodied, medium+ finish, medium+ acidity. A great wine to have with grilled meats.
