Wow, this made up for the cooked 2005 San Rocco I opened 3 weeks ago. Delicious. San Rocco surrounds the Chiesa on the hill up to Serralunga. Slow-ox'd for 8 hours and served with NY strips. An interesting contrast to the 2007 Cerequio served before it. As expected, the Cerequio had a little more elegance, and this more power. Aged in about 20% new barrique and 80% used (it's now aged in large casks), the barrique aging did show in …

A month in Barolo: A visit at Azelia with the Scavino family (Castiglione Falletto, Piedmont, Italy) : Vine age is 80 years. Pretty and floral aromas, and quite high toned fruit here. Beautiful fruit on palate entry, showing some floral components as well. Well integrated. Some floral tones on the finish, showing again beautiful structural integration of tart tannins that are quite puckering, gritty tannins, but it's all tied tightly with the fruit. 92+

Jeroboams Fiesta Piedmontese Tasting. Brief notes: Black fruits and flowers on the nose. Big, full texture, the tannins build through the palate. Lots of power and intensity here. Sweet fruit is there underneath.

This is very nice, classic barolo nose, elegant, medium body -- but for my taste it's starting to decline, I'll drink up my other bottles.

Perfect cork. Medium tawny colored. Medium to light aromatics. Mineral, mint, meat, blackberries and a hint of evergreen trees. Velvety tannins come in at a 180 grit, smooth but present.

Wow, this is really beautiful, Healthy color, notes of sweet spices, plum, some dar red cherries, smoke, tobacco, also some graphite, tar, cedar wood, some black tea. It‘s medium-full bodied, dense and powerful, with high acidity, still medium-high tannin and very good length. These are San Rocco fireworks….

$80+ Blind Tasting Old World (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA) : Chocolate core with larger orange rim; soy, fennel, burnt orange, slight raisin and volatility, the tannins aren't fighting back, in a spot to drink, don't wait any longer on these, would have expected more from 2006 Barolo.

Super tight and closed on opening. But an hour in the decanter, the fruit was singing and the tannins subsided. Not the profound or complex of wines, but definitely enjoyable, esp compared to other 2006s. Judging from this bottle and a 06 bricco fiasco drank recently, Azelia turned out enjoyable wines in 2006. Their approach seemed to have tamed the insane tannins from the vintage enough that the fruits can show through, unlike other producers where the fruit may well …

Mid ruby. Lots of sediment. Tough tannins, not yet tamed by time. Initially closed and not approachable. Needs plenty of air to soften. After four hours, started to open up. Still drying but can discern luscious fruit under those tannins. Still has a long life ahead.

Fine fruit. Reasonable balance although a bit tight. But basically boring. It could be in a dumb phase as it is still youthful, but there does not seem to be much going on here beyond a straightforward good wine. No panache. Which is not what I was hoping for.

As expected, the wine improved after being left in the fridge overnight (vacuvin-ed). Prolonged air contact brought better balance and harmony. The strong tannins noted previously eased, taking off a slight bitter edge and bringing more fruit into the picture. Have upgraded my previous score.

Pale garnet color. On the nose, classic floral aromas typical of Barolo. Surprisingly big tannins, unsoftened by age, but enough fruit to balance out. Cherries, floral herbs, with some tertiary notes. Flavors did evolve in glass. This needs proper decanting, PnP and didn’t do this wine proper justice. Needs more air and a re-taste tomorrow.

Unusually well balanced. Deep cherry fruit. Long clean finish. Tar and roses and herbs in the palate and the nose. Everything is excellent. But this does not speak of nebbiolo quite enough to push to outstanding. No idiosyncratic notes that a great Barolo has. And I am not expecting that to develop, as this is drinking week now after a two hour decant. But a really nice bottle with food and by itself.

Aired in bottle for an hour and perhaps needed more. Dark fruit and tar notes apparent. Think it needs more time to come together as some felt that it was not well-integrated. Thick sediment so perhaps that caused some to feel that it was not as smooth as one would have liked. Still like it overall but below the expectations heading into it given the prior scores.

aromas of tar, rose petals and meat juices jump from the glass, powerful and intense acid, big tannin, flavors of dried cherries, mineral, exotic herb, spices and flowers, complex, there is a ton of stuffing for cellar potential, this bottle shows a transition into the tertiary phase is coming soon, overall is powerful and built, decanting recommended, shines next to a nice plate of Bolognese, very good with food

Dark purple, the oaky vanilla nose reminded me of a Napa cab, dark, smoky and ripe fruits, tar, and an oaky finish. After about 90 minutes, some of the more pretty Barolo aromatics started to emerge. This is definitely modern in style, and a bigger Barolo that is ripe, sweet, oaky and has a darker fruit profile. Drink w some air/decant or over next 5-10 yrs.

Soooo very nice almost immediately. Had my first sip at 10 mins, and consumed over 4 hours. Was so very drinkable, tame tannins, tame acidity, nice bouquet and body. I'm glad I didn't read these other reviews before consuming, as I might've been disappointed...as it was, just enjoyed it immensely with mushroom pizza. Only 1 bottle left, so can't really follow development over the successive tastings, so plan to drink before the end of the decade.

Without taking any official tasting note, this was a dark beauty of a wine that is firmly in it's drinking window. The nose was full of dark fruits, minerals, florals and earth. On the palate, it was remarkably vibrant with a pulse of acidity pumping mineral-laden dark fruits across the senses. It finished long with a slight sweet tannin, yet there's really no reason to wait when considering this wine. That said, I'm sure it will drink well for many …

Cherry, Ink & tar with some vanilla underneath, rather than rose & spices. Still somewhat primary and perhaps even a bit closed. Tannins evident but not unpleasant. Some of my other 1999 Barolos like Monprivato, seem to be coming into their drinking window, but perhaps the more masculine vineyards require another couple years. Not nearly as elegant as the Monprivato nor as intense as the Cavallotto. The wine looks garnet colored. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. The body …

Medium-dark brownish garnet. Expressive nose of tar, tobacco, raspberry, cloves. Brooding and tannic on the palate but with good fruit and alcohol stuffing to make a nice balance. Softened after 1h of decanting. More structured and a bit sturdier than the 07 but also very good.

Mini Azelia Vertical : Took over an hour to shed the barn aromas. The color is strong, with very little bricking. A vein of appealing succulent and fleshy, smoky, red sweet cherry flavor run through this barolo. It sparkles against the dominant backbone of woody and balsamic aromas -- soy, newly redone wood flooring, soaked wine barrel, roasted branzino. Still interesting and better than '96. Drink up while the fruit still holds up.

Deep, dark and brooding with notes of coal smoke, cured meats, liquorice, cedar, scorched earth and balsamic. It is kind of ‘Arnie in a flash Italian suit’, big and muscular but sort of polished and as the wine takes in plenty of air there’s a delightful whiff of violets. The palate is underpinned by some serious iron and graphite structure. A long way yet to go but an excellent drink now none the less.

An intense nose that shows volatile acidity, melted tar, dried rose petals, Assam tea and dark fruits. There is a surprisingly amount of spicy new oak with toast and coffee grinds. Decidedly sleek and modern but unmistakably Barolo (unless you think it’s from another region). Aromas literally roar into the nostrils titillating the senses with whiffs of coal, licorice, dark plum, graphite and violets.
