Tasted blind. I completely went to the Cote de Nuits. Nose of sour cherries and sous bois, with the freshness of whole cluster fermentation that I detected. Some rust and cloudiness here which is totally old world. Lovely length too.

Very pleasantly surprised to find I was shocked by the quality of the two bottles of the �12 I recently bought through auction. I�ve had the Bloom�s Field bottling before and loved it, but I expected little, given this is both the generic Santa Rita bottling and a wine with over a decade on it. It far exceeded my imagination. Opposed to the pronounced California fruit forwardness that others seem to be remarking on, this is exactly how I remember it when I tried it 2014.. still dominated by whole cluster overtones. Albeit more developed now, though very much in line with my initial impressions years ago. I just don't get it. All I read about this wine is how it's "so burgudian, so burgudian, so burgudian".... Yes, its a great wine. But it's nothing like burgundy. This is definitely well constructed & just needs a bit of time (60 minutes) to blow off some of it's forward california fruit and calm down a bit. After a lot longer (another 2 hours?), this starts to develop nicely (although not picking up much complexity). I'm not sure how long this will go, but holding onto some bottles for maybe 4-5 more years could show that it develops into something that's more worth waiting for.

Last of 6 bottles. 50% whole clusters, aged in neutral oak. This bottle has an intoxicating perfume of Pinot fruit, with notes of cola, rhubarb, tart red cherry, and forest floor.
