One of a kind. This is just a great, great drop. It turns everything into full volume but somehow, the sound is not distorted. On the contrary, one can taste every flavour that is underpinned by the richness of the wine without being overdone. Lovely notes of ripe mango, nectarine and floral notes, the body is a full frontal assault, but somehow is light on its feet dancing across one's tongue. Never feels heavy and very proportioned. slight evolution in color but tropical and stone fruit notes The palate is bright and sunshiny with a full finish. No real flaws and very enjoyable. I feel it is an outstanding wine but feel vague about a precise numerical point but suffice to say it satisfies everything one would want from the wine but lacks the oomph of perfection (so mid to upper 90s?)

[Tasted Double Blind] Deep gold in the glass with significant orange. The nose is quite mute showing dusty old furniture, orange peel, dried lemon peel, apricot, baked pear, and a slightly metallic note. The palate enters on the dried orange and baked pear though the fruit ultimately feels quite tired and lack vibrance. The acid is medium minus. The finish is a tad clipped and bitter. Of the 3 Rhone blancs, this was the best in my opinion. Solid structure at 30 years old, with years left to go. Palate was a little lighter than the 2006 and there was definitely oxidation (right in my wheelhouse). Out of Donn's cellar, courtesy of his wife Patty, to remember him at Chip's house.

M. Chapoutier Domaine visit : Dark yellow color. Oh la, la. Lovely nose of apricot and quince, spices, animalic notes as well. Generous palate with well judged bitterness on the finish buffering the fruit. This is grand and in very good shape at age 10. Kudos!

At this point this was an older bottle of L'oree (by a decade) then any previous bottle I have experienced, but I was happy to see that at 30 years of age this is still a fantastic expression of an aged white Northern Rhone. I’ve had very mixed luck with Chapoutier’s whites. I don’t know if it’s a storage problem, a production problem or just bad luck, but a few from the 2000s have been heavily oxidised (undrinkably so - I’m happy with light oxidation but some of these reminded me of the dark days of burgundy premox). This one, though, was in fabulous shape. Beautifully rich and rounded, really mouth filling and unforgettably huge length. I’m pretty sure I have another one somewhere …

Northern Rhône Dinner (semi-blind) (AB' house, Keizersgracht Amsterdam) : You must appreciate the style but this is superb oxidative Marsanne. Straw-yellow color. Wonderful bouquet of bee-wax, kumquat, macadamia nuts, dried apricot, lemon zest and much more. Well balanced on the palate with great freshness. Oxidative style as dry sherry. Notes of melon skin.

A quirky wine, but enjoyable. Shows it maturity with slight sherry notes, honey, dried flowers, wax and a nice saline minerality. This retains freshness and lift with excellent acidity. The sherry hints took a bit of getting used to, but this was superb with food.

Delicious and not maderized. Brownish gold, akin to an aged Sauterne. Decanted and drank over 2 hours. Nose of beeswax, honeysuckle, caramelized apples and molten rock. On the palate rich and fat, great acidity and minerality, medium bodied, nice dry finish and no sweetness at all. Excellent.

Sourced from the caves of Chapoutier in Thain-Ermitage. Unfortunately this is a bad wine and time has taken its toll. Best bottle I've had of this wonderful luscious wine. Dark golden yellow, decanted and aerated and drank over an hour. Simply wonderfully balanced, sweet nose of honeycomb, rocks, apricots, marzipan, popcorn whilst buttery and fat on the palate, no sweetness or maderization. Medium to full bodied, nice long velvety finish. Amazing bottle!

Food: French Duration: 2.5 hours Condition: perfect Aroma: red date, steel, honey, white flowers, hints of green grass Notes: had a strong smell of oxidation at first but this turned out really well after 1.5 hours. This wine evolves very quickly and offer an extremely long and red date aftertaste. Very full bodied with good thickness, I think this wine approached it's prime drinking window. Slightly less pristine bottle than the last one. Decanted and drank over two hours+. Did not chill post decanting and should have a bit. Deep golden color, apricots, honeysuckle on the nose along with minerals and stone. Luscious entry on the palate, fat and rich mid palate and a nice vibrant finish for this delightful full bodied wine. Hope the next bottle is better and will try to preserve the temperature at around 13 degrees next time.

Flabbergasting. Deep golden color, decanted and put the decanter in a bucket filled with cold water to preserve the best drinking temperature. On the nose honeysuckle, stones, dried apricots, stone and minerals. What a complex wine that pairs with a variety of foods. In a word: stunning. A testimony to why we need to cellar wine. Elegantly rich with honeyed fruit, nutty, but then there is this underlying core of white and green fruits, still fresh, keeping this wine vibrant and alive. Finally we get a great bottle. Needed like 1 hour of decanting and it has to be served chilled but not cold (Made a big difference) . Definitely one needs to like the style. We have tried this before with average results but this Magnum tonight performed at par to the hype.
