It has that classic bacon/ cured meat note on the nose, plus some okay spice Tannins are ripe and now very open, dark fruit and leather. Intense fruit and spice. Drinking beautifully , still young

Floral and Smokey on the nose. Decanted for an hour during dinner and it developed into notes of smoked meat, violet, bacon, and black pepper.

Excellent, very enjoyable. Deep dark garnet/purple glass-staining color. Boysenberry and ripe black cherry complemented earthy and smoky notes swirling on the palate with a refined silky texture. Very long finish. This wine is in a great place currently but will definitely last at least 10 more years. My WOTN amongst three N. Rhone bottlings.

Less complex than the previous bottle I tasted 2 years ago. Fruit is declining with no further evolution of tertiaries. Still balanced and enjoyable as a mid-week wine. Drink now

14.5% alc. Nose of toasty oak, olives, cured meat, and plumb. Really nice tertiary notes showing. Medium plus palate weight with excellent acidity and a medium plus finish. Similar to the 2017 Jaboulet crozes hermitage I had recently, but this is clearly a step up in all categories. Tasted great on a pop and pour and nothing was lost or gained on day 2. I found this bottle to be balanced despite leaning towards a heavier oak and alcohol presence.

Had it with pork tenderloin and a home made gravy along with haricot verts. I think it is drinking well now, and doesn't have "years" to go. Not any tannin. Fruit on the front was muted. The wine is fine, but not a knock your socks off wine you will remember for generations

Deep dark red, dark rich fruit (blackberry?) with smoke, a little meatiness, and pepper on the nose. Full mouthfeel, high tannins, medium+ acidity. Beautiful long finish. This can definitely use some more time.

Dark, opaque Syrah. 2nd Label of La Chapelle from Jaboulet. An immediate blackberry and brambleberry notes with a strong note of minerality on the nose. Followed by some smoke and leather with some baking spices. Rich and powerful on the palate with loads of dark cherries, and dark raspberry notes. Tannins already well integrated. The wine is already drinking well and may improve for a couple more years but then should be good for another 5-7 years.

Paul Jaboulet Aine Masterclass with the winemaker in London (Wine Society 150th Anniversary) : Less pitched nose than the ‘15 Cote Rotie and just generally less ready. Racy hedonistic fruit, almost clunky. Served from magnum, which I’d hold for several years. 93 potential.

From mag. A bit tight on the nose with blackberry and spiced meat. Medium bodied and very fresh. Not hugely structured. Delicately spiced, savoury finish. Enjoyable now but not sure this is for the long haul.

I last tasted this in 2020 and I said it would be great in 5 years. Made it four and was rewarded for sure, though it can go even longer. Ripe blueberries, ripe black currants, ripe strawberries, dirt, dead leaves/forest floor, fresh cracked black pepper, church incense, dried green herbs and a hint of wood on the nose. Somewhat of a surprising wine, and would never have guessed it a Hermitage blind. Also would not have guessed it a 2017 and instead, a much older wine, with a cooked fruit, and an oxidated affect. And yet the palate has an elevated freshness to it. With a limited experience, I fortunately have two more bottles of this wine to compare in the future - I will happily do so. My first ever Hermitage, what a wine! Very intense and complex nose with dark plumb, dark chocolate, black pepper, mint, leather... Full bodied with grippy tannins but soft enough to make it a great wine.

Wow, what a sensual and sensational wine. It is super-young, but it is almost impossible to stop drinking. It is rich and lush yet has a brooding underlying character. I did notice a lot of oak still, and think this will be even better in 3-5 years (shocker).

With a little bit of air this wine is ready to go. As mentioned in previous reviews this can be a bit polished and generic to the purist but should not be overlooked as a daily. The quality, freshness and depth of fruit is in the bottle. For around $60 this might be undervalued in today's market. This will continue to develop some character and hold the majority over while the La Chappelle is vertical. Going back for more. 92++
