Opened this after an over-oaked and underwhelming Quazzolo Barbaresco. Popped the cork, left the wine cellar to feed the dogs and returned to the most wonderful bouquet imaginable of sweet fruits and Asian spices. Poured some in the glass, and it smelled like wet, runny dogshit. Poured more into a 2nd glass and the same thing. You can’t actually smell the bad stuff unless your nose is inside the glass. PnP (I know better, just bad planning). Ruby w/ dark red brick edge in color. Nose of cranberries, truffles, mandarin orange and subtle wood spice. On the palate: cherries, vanillin, five spice powder, plums, mandarin orange and sweet green stems. Creamy tannins are barely perceived on gums and tongue. Long finish of plums, mandarin orange, wood spice and sweet, sandy tannins from the stems. The wine is young and not fully integrated, but somehow manages to be harmonious and enjoyable …
