2010 Was a Good Vintage in France (Jordan's Place - Chicago IL) : Caramel and toffee notes. I adored this wine when last tasted (over a decade ago), but tonight’s bottle was flat and uninspiring.

Nose of candied apricot and honey. Very viscous mouth, it almost looks like maple syrup as it is dense. The acidity is there to bring tension and ensure that the juice remains drinkable and loose. Aromas of candied almonds invade the palate. Big finish on the peach which brings a little freshness to the whole and which coats everything in its path over a significant length. Very good, but too viscous for my taste, a question of style.

2003 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris SGN Clos Jebsal - this wine has fine acidity that stood well both with and against the sweetness, giving it much life and movement. This has concentrated apricot, honey and peach that go on forever and ever. It amazes me that while the wine is thick, viscous and has a coating mouthfeel, it is able to be such a light , refreshing and lively wine. Classic. For reals.

Opened by Anwar. Amazing honey, apricot and stone fruit that coats the mouth and never ends. This was incredible.

A very interstign SGN, as there was no botrytis. An orange golden color and quite viscous. Hugely floral would be an understatement about the nose. Then add some honey, orange marmalade, and brighter citrus as well. Huge sugar extremely well balanced with acidity. It almost approaches being a bit compote like (a character I do not love in Pinot Gris usually), but the acidity and the depth of flavors more than carried it off. Rich and dense but avoids being …

Admittedly after the assault on our palates from the previous two wines, I was in no state to appreciate this wines subtleties and elegance, and this wine suffered. In another act of selflessness, I had tried some of this wine the morning of the dinner to decide how to adjust the pot du creme. It was truly stunning. I would say whay my wife said, but it would be censored. That morning and the following morning with my palate fresh, …

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal SGN Vertical (Raffles Hotel Wine, Food and Arts Experience 2007) (Raffles Hotel, Singapore) : Bright coppery gold. Toast and honey on the nose. Mushrooms on the viscous palate with good acidity. Extravagant and not typical of Clos Jebsal. (220g/L residual sugar)

A Day With Olivier Humbrecht (Turckheim, Alsace, France) : Medium gold in color, this wine finished with 220 g/l residual sugar and 10.5% alcohol. In '03 there was no botrytis and this wine was made solely from super-ripe grapes that had undergone passerillage ( shrivelling of the grapes, but not due to botrytis ). Leave it to Jebsal to find a way to make SGN quality grapes no matter what Mother Nature throws at it in a given vintage! This …
