With FC and AW at Hispania. Ripe dark fruit, vanilla, touch of spice, ripe but not overly rich, vibrant acidity, some chewiness on finish. May improve - a touch simple, at present at least

PnP, damp earth, dried strawberry, medicinal cherry, drank and tasted more like a well aged BDX than a Tempranillo. My last and least favorite of the 04 Asuas.

With three bottles left I was nervous about CT comments of "over the hill". however, pleasantly surprised. Colour still live. Fruit and no 'ancient' odours nose (no volatility). Fruit still on palate but (Iadmit) maturing. Cool, clean with loss of fruit on finish. But still fine by me.

Same note as prior bottle though less fruit, this time, more damp earthy components. This is how I love my aged Riojas. I wish this was easier to find.

Slow ox 2 hrs. Dark, seemingly extracted, yet medium bodied. Strawberries, black olive, balsamic notes early on, forest floor, cocoa, earthy mushroom, wood, faint raspberry and bing cherry notes show up later. Pieces and parts fit nicely. Plenty of life left, but no reason to wait with a little air. Old school Rioja, just like I like it. 96 today, not sure this gets better.

Deep rich black fruit bouquet. Intense, full flavoured with excellent balance. Oak dominated by fruit and extract. Still very young. Just about ready. At present lacks complexity. It will be interesting to see how this style of Rioja will age and its eventual rating.

Has muted yet complex dark and lightly spicy aromas of hedgerow fruits, mulberries, blackberries and liquorice interspersed by cloves. Its medium bodied linear and structured palate has very good concentration, a luxurious mouth-feel and a nicely clovey blackfruited mid palate with reasonable acidity. Ends longish and slightly disjointed with some heat from the alcohol. (14%)

Purchased in Madrid, when the gran reserva 2004 was declared top by WS. Smell of sour cherries, some subtle vanilla/oak. Rounded tannins, dark berry taste, sweetish smooth body, well balanced. Probably at its peak now.

100% Tempranillo grown in Rioja Alta, in an excellent vintage, sourced from very old vines with yields around 1 ton per hectare. Aged in 100% French oak. Dark ruby with garnet highlights. The scents immediately suggest a complex, layered nose with opulent black fruit aromas running along coffee, charcoal and cigar box notes with a touch of spice, tar and tea leaves. Fleshy concentration, bright acidity and rich fruit result in an elegantly balanced wine with a long life ahead.

En Premier (Lavinia - Madrid) : Granny's room. Very closed at first. Blackberries on the nose but with time. Palate showed little of the caracther of this extraordinary vintage. Maybe too soon? Muy cerrada al principio. Habitación de abuela. En nariz, con algo de tiempo, compota de moras. La boca mostró un poco del carácter de esta extraordinaria añada. ¿Quizás demasiado pronto?

purple/ red colour v. toasty nose lots of grip initially but then quite mellow very long Would love to try this decanted and slowly over the course of an evening as it wasn't giving that much away at the moment. Lots of stuffing though so potentially great.

Popped this to go with grilled steak and chicken at a friend's house. Really a nice wine. Remarkably dark and brooding for a Reserva its age. Very pure blackberry and black currant fruit with dried herbs, a touch of licorice, violets, and red meat jus. Great on the palate and lovely finish. While I think it can rest for many more years, this is drinking perfectly right now, in my opinion. Fantastic wine that at $22 is a great QPR. …

Opened to accompany the Spanish Tapas I made for dinner. Excellent choice. Still young, but already drinking exceptionally well. Ripe black cherry, tobacco and dried herbs. Lovely balance, texture,and length. Tremendously tasty wine irrespective of its price, but a killer QPR to boot at about $22 per bottle. CVNE may very well be my favorite Rioja producer.

Colour: beautiful ruby red. Arome: plum, leather, dark cherry, vanilla, hints of liquorice. Taste: blackcurrant, tobacco, redcurrant jelly,toast, long little bit bitter finsh with good tannins and acidity. Medium bodied, complex but easy drinkable wine. Best with bloody steak with blueberry & wine sauce. Needs decanting. 87 points.

(From 375lm bottle) Disappointing compared to many excellent vintages of this wine. Though fairly light in body, a fairly "new world" core, with some intensity but a rather phenolic character. Finish is short/hollow. Lacking any of the usual spice. No real improvement in glass over 1 hour. I'd pass on this in the future.

Found this wine at a wine-restaurant in Avila Spain and brought a bottle home with me. It is a wonderful classic rioja with bright fruit forward and lovely soft spices to follow. hints of tobacco and leather undergird the cherry and plum flavors on the palate and the finish is nice and moderately long. Wonderful bouquet and just the right amount of acidity. Good value too. Drink now.Wish i had brought more back with me.

Just great and drinking very well now with a bit of air. Earthy showing flavors of leather, tobacco, cherries, plums, cedar and mint. Very aromatic. Bright acidity balanced it all well.

Fantastic wine. Served with grilled lamb chops tonight. An old school Rioja with medium body, great balance, and equally great pleasure factor. Although this wine was delicious right after pop and pouring, it was equally delicious the second night. Red to black fruit like plum, sour cherry, and blackberry with lots of earth, and a hint of rosemary stem. Complex bouquet with some stoned fruit, leather and herbal notes. The follows through on the palate with a little peppery finish. Not too much tanin. Would age well.

Oak, spice (cinnamon and nutmeg), blackberry, and cherry on the nose. Bright cherry, spice, and plum on the palate. Lots of leather on the finish, along with a little cocao. Moderate acidity, medium-bodied. Light tannins. This bottle is a bit better than the last one.

Cherry, leather, and earth on the nose. On the palate, flavors of cherry and raspberry. Barnyard/earth notes present upon opening, but after 45-60 minutes, they faded a bit. Light-to-medium bodied, light acidity, thin finish (not very tannic). Enjoyable, but not overly complex. A good table red.

Lovely classic Rioja with tart cherry and well-integrated oak, smooth, light and tart. Blackberrries, vanilla, some black pepper. On the simple side for a good Rioja, floral complexity not really there, but a great QPR for a wine that is as much fun to inhale as to drink.

Popped and poured over 2 1/2 hours at the restaurant of Hotel Occidental Miguel Angel, Madrid, Spain: Nice dark purple colour. Blueberry pie and currants on the nose and palate right off the bat, with more air also spices and some floral aspects. The oak is well integrated, providing a nice creaminess. Deep red-violet colour, nose: at the begining a bit too much alcohol, opens up after a while, then: cherry, wood, tobacco, moist earth. Palate: cherry, with a nice balance between tannin and acidity, finish a bit "too hot" due to high level of alcohol, for the first seconds you can feel a nice level of acidity then unfortunately outweighted by alcohol... but the more you drink the higher tolerance for alcohol, which again brings acidity into play ;)

Very enjoyable bottle with hints of strawberry, pomegranate and lots of herb spices. Smooth texture makes a great wine to enjoy on its own as well as pairing with food. The flavors stood up well with a vegetable barley stew. Highly recommended for ~$16.
