Domaine Vincent Paris, Cornas, La Geynale

In a great spot now. Wonderful nose - smoky black fruit with game, baked black cherry, berry leaf, olive and spice. Drinking well, very integrated at this stage.

2011 vintage

Coal dust, printers ink, blackest berry, blood, bacon fat, violets, stony earth. The palate is poised, bright leading to a long crunchy finish. A little smooth-as-silk tannin adds texture. Elegant for a Cornas, more Cote Rotie in profile. A brilliant wine that will continue to improve for the next 5-10 years.

2009 vintage

Tight nose at first, but palate already enjoyable with an immediate decant. Decanted half and left the other in bottle. Pretty dark, robust tannins still and lots of intensity. Increasingly floral and lifted with time, meaty and punchy, cured ham, gets more red fruited. Tightly coiled still and needed some time to unfurl, yet punchy aromas and broad texture with patience.

Vincent Paris Geynale vertical (London N19) : Some black olive syrah fruit, but also a lactic note. Given the rave reviews this got on release, this is now a huge disappointment. Whether it will develop more interest with time, I don't know.

Ludicrously good. Red fruits with a hint of olive brine on the nose and then perfect balance on the palate without any of the heavy tannins or rusticity that mars Cornas' reputation. a "wow" bottle, bought for a pittance.

Dark red, still young looking. On the nose, it is ferrous, with soil and rust, some light TCA I would say. Not much fruit. Same on the palate, a bit of astringency, with some light TCA markers, chalky tannins. Not as enjoyable as the 2013 I had a few weeks back, due to this light contamination I believe

Just a quick note - double-decanted 5 hours prior to dinner. Young wine, full of vigor and just beginning to soften around the edges. Obviously Cornas. Very good, not amazing but delicious, and a fine companion at the dinner table. Will be better in 5-10 years.

Tremendously fresh, tremendously enjoyable. Ageless colour - deep red and crimson. Lovely deep savoury wine….olives and cardamom/clove complexity as a backdrop for dark fruits (blackberry). Still a tough of puckery tannins. Feels like at least 10 years further in it.

Cote-Rotie and Cornas are friends (chicago, IL) : This was opened and followed along for about 5+ hours. This showed more of a broad shouldered style compared to the Jamet. There is an extra bit of heft behind it with black cherries, licorice, incense, raspberries, meaty tones, black pepper, earth notes, and some sweet tobacco leaf. It had plenty of menthol and black olive to the aroma along with dark fruits and a hint of earth and mushroom development. It was silky of texture and fruits had a savoury edge on the palate. Tannins were moderate and gravelly. It was mid-weight and balanced and in such a lovely place.

Northern Rhone WIMPS #163 6th April 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick) : Black peppercorn, beef carpaccio and hawthorn on the nose. Palate has more of the same with the addition of some lardons sweating in the pan. Tannins resolving but not there yet, this judgement of Paris is favourable.

Four hours of decant time, the nose and palate ring true with the Cornas qualities of bacon fat, black olives, underbrush and leather. The tannins are prominent at the start but get in step with the acidity after a few sips. This has the structure you want to experience and the balance needed, with a medium mouthfeel and a longer finish. Intensity medium. Wide ranging aromas and palate: Blackberry, (black) cherry, blueberry, (cooked) plum, green pepper, black pepper, forest floor, cigar box, laurel, liquorice, black olives. Still young, opened up with 2-3 hours of air. Lovely: great southern Northern Rhone, with good fruit balanced by notes of game, meat and mineral. Really delicate, with no sign of the typical Cornas rusticity of tannins: blind I'd probably have called this as Hermitage.

Okay, this is opening up. The elegant side of Cornas, light, cool, olive notes, earth and funk. It’s still not a child of the land in my opinion, but certainly the best bottle of this wine yet. Bagnols-en-Fôret with Niels.

WIMPS #153 Northern Rhône 27th May 2022 (La Trompette, Chiswick) : A decent wine and might just be a bit on the young side but this feels a bit worked compared to the other reds we had. There is a quite dense liquorice start to the nose with some blackcurrant pastille and some creme de cassis spiritiness. Palate has some bresaola and blackcurrant cordial with a firm tannic structure. May well be a different beast in a few years.

The nose is rich, balanced, and pungent as it fills the glass with Black cherries, licorice, black pepper, tobacco notes, crushed rocks, black currants, violets, amd black raspberries. The Full bodied feel carries though the balance from the nose with medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins that still show youth. This could still use another few years to fully come together. There is a ton to like here right now and it still has room to grow.

Surprisingly closed 10,5 years after harvest. Discreet on the nose, but the classic notes are there. Dark berries and bacon. Just not “in your face”. It is on the palate this one convinces. Super juicy, fresh and elegant. Still quite tannic, which I personally like. Blindly, I really don’t think I would guess Cornas. Not that this is a quality in itself.

This followed the Haisma 15 Cornas. Much smoother, a bit lactic - nice enough, but not what I'm looking for in a Cornas.

Very good after 30-45 minute decant, although still closed up & a bit tannic on mid palate and partially into the finish. Medium weight with classic syrah smokiness. Good finish. Would have benefitted from longer decant & maybe even better if there'd been any left for day 2.

2011 vintage

Almost unanimously the WOTN, such a dense and massive wine but in a good way. Still drinking very young with a long way to go. Plenty of structure, tannins, acidity and fruit, all in balance. Treads the fine line between red and dark fruits well.

This is much darker compared to the 2007, there is much more of everything. There is violets on the nose, dark fruit. This is ripe, for sure, there’s sweetness to the fruit and notes of licorice and tobacco. This is young as well, the tannins are marked and need to settle down further. Sleek and slightly polished, this still doesn’t speak the language of the land it comes from. Will time in the cellar resolve this? Maybe, we’ll see.

Score merited on day 2. Day 1 was rustic and un-giving while showing potential. Day 2 this wine was singing with a blend of thick fruit, game, herbs and wet earth. Solid length.

1 hour plus decant, but could have easily PnP’d. Purple color. Complex nose with floral elements, earth, bell pepper, and livestock. Wine wasn’t as deep as I was expecting but was filled with blackberry, meaty flavors, and tar. Medium finish. Started out awesome (95) but slowly declined to (93). Pretty decent QPR.

Dark, powerful and complex Syrah aromas with garrigue, forest floor and black olives. Dark, dense and monumental in the mouth, but also soft. Really impressive.

Not a top vintage, but this wine was quite super. A basket full of raspberries, subtle pepper, some strawberries and underneath a fine acidity. The taste was also supported by the same fresh and ripe acidity and in the finish lots of ripe tannins and some soft bitters completed the wine. This is a copybook syrah!
