PnP, for a casual Monday night family pizza. This showed still young, vibrant and with lovely fruit, but age made it subtle and nuanced. A wonderful aged Barbera.

I think this may still be too young. There is a lot of material here, and it is delicious in its way, but it feels like there will be more complexity and delineation with further aging. I would hold for now. Hard to justify the value at $59 but, hey, it's G. Rinaldi!

Big wine that comes with a lot of flavour aswell as heat and tartness. Cranberries, cherries and sweet licorice on the nose. A hint of beef broth a few seconds after tasting. There is quality here and the Rinaldi wines are famous and sought after for a reason. If you have a few bottles of this vintage I suggest waiting a couple years to let it come to its own.

I’m not a fan of fruity Barbera, and this one is more savory and it’s delicious. It’s floral with dark fruit and licorice. It’s chewy with a delightful finish. Enjoyed with our mussels and clams in a light marinara sauce.

Xmas & New Year in Japan; 12/19/2022-1/6/2023 (Japan) : On the nose, balsamic, blueberry, plum, herbs, forest floor, sweet spice. Gorgeous silky mouthfeel. Lovely, transparent earthy character in the mid-palate. Velvety tannin. Very long finish. With a bit of time in glass, red fruits came through more with cherry. Beautifully combines elegance & purity with concentration of fruit. Excellent.

Accidentally opened when I thought I was pulling the '16 Freisa. Oddly a bit reductive on opening, it blows off quickly. This is a darker fruited vintage for the producer. Lovely berry fruit, tar, licorice and florals. It's midweighted with fresh crunchy fruit coupled with some savory cured meat and tar notes. Lovely balance here. Delightful Barbera made for the table. Drinking very well right now with time in hand.

My personal "unwritten rule", to give all G. Rinaldi Barberas (as well as Dolcetto & Freisa) like at least 3+ years after release, seems to be just right, when drinking the 2017 today. Not much change from my last bottle last month (that I evidently forgot I drank). Berry fruit, florals, tar, and some subtle meaty savory notes. Midweighted with crunchy berry fruit, cured meat, tar, and iodine. Bright acidity keeps it fresh. Delightful Barbera made for the table. 91

A private lunch (Restaurant Zoldering, Amsterdam, NL) : Youthful but approachable, classic and elegant style, firm and fresh, polished and precise, lovely balance (14% ABV), elegant and expressive with exemplary varietal typicity, delicately creamy, firm but powdery tannins, salmiac finish with excellent resonance and length. Should age well.

I’m generally not a fan of Barbera, but once every 5 years or so, I can enjoy it. This has sour cherries and crunchy cranberries, but it has excellent balance so it is not fruity and sweet. There is a savory quality that paired nicely with lasagne.

Racy and juicy, but also sexy and voluptuous. A stunner all around. Ruby color, bright acid, deep fruit, but not too dark, and amazing floral notes. Miles of finish.

Amazing. First chance to try a Giuseppe Rinaldi wine, and boy was I impressed. Even at such a young age, this has a haunting and beguiling nose and is superbly balanced on the palate and so delicious already. Hope to try the Barolo one day, but man is it $$$!

Pale purple color. Intense nose of sweet caramel and burnt sugar, red fruit, earth. Juicy, high acidity, medium- tanins.

A nose of berry fruit, florals, tar and some subtle savory notes. Mid weighted, supple, and sappy on the palate with plump and snappy dark berry fruit and beautifully balanced acidity. There's softness, grace, and a sense of harmony that is easy to love and hard to achieve. An outstanding barbera made for the table.

Not showing its age yet. Still very much on the fruit and quite rich, but it found its best balance and showed the acidity and its mineral side on the third day, and it was absolutely lovely.

Translucent ruby color. Muted nose of red fruit. Medium body. Young & juicy, but has a lovely balance and elegance. Great fruit flavors of strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry with an underlying note of licorice. The tannins and acidity are pronounced and suggest another couple years of bottle age before the wine truly hits its drinking window. Probably has another 10 years after that.

Liqueur-like. Easily the ripest Barbera d'Alba I have ever tasted and nothing like what I expect from Rinaldi. There's a savory meatiness to keep this from being entirely one dimensional but this ultimately comes up short, to the point I can't imagine drinking more than one glass.

Pop and pour Darker fruited and coming across warmer than most years of this. Rich and ripe for the producer, but still holding its balance well. Dark berry fruit, florals, some meatiness and stoniness. There is enough acidity to carry its larger than average frame, and this come across well balanced in a richer than average way for the producer. Has a core of ripe, luscious black cherry. It is chunky and loaded with meaty, savoury elements. There's the scent of violets and it has plenty of flavour, carried by chalky tannins.

Pastrami day (Chicago, IL) : This far surpasses its lowly grape and status and is an absolutely brilliant wine in its own right. Sure, it's not super complex and won't develop it with time either, but this hits the spot damn well. It's a lovely mix of juicy black and red fruit, without becoming overbearing. Couple this with some earth, minerality, and florals, and you've got a super delicious easy-drinking red.

The nose draws you in with the scent of violets and fresh cherries. It is a glossy wine in the mouth but oh so pure. It builds in the glass and has good depth and complexity and is light on its feet, possessing excellent energy.

Tasting at Giuseppe Rinaldi (Barolo, Piedmont, Italy) : Big nose has black fruit and smoky, spicy notes. Round and quite fresh in the mouth. Light-to-medium bodied from start through to a long, clean finish.

Full-throttle and unapologetic.... The nose is intense, with dark red and black fruit, licorice, coco powder, sweet herbs and exotic spice. On the palate, it displays an explosion of dark ripe fruits with a pulse of zesty acidity, as it travels quickly across the senses, and leaves a bit of heat in the close. The finish shows last notes of blackberry, cherry and licorice with a twang of bitterness on the back palate. There's a hint of volatility here on …
