Taste it at the Quinta shop in Pinhão. Didn't note the bottling year. Nose of dried fruit, cedar, and honey. On the palate figs, caramel, marzipan, and plum compote. Spectacularly long finish.

I picked up 3 of these at auction a couple of years ago. The other two were drinkable but faded, spirity and past best. This was similar but slightly better. No seepage but a loose cork on opening. That was the problem with all three. Much of the colour has dropped out, looks like an aged tawny. Better nose, plummy, tobacco, hint of dried fruit. Past best but still a decent flavour, light but decent intensity. Solid port but should …

Its a dense tawny. Not as refined as others. Color is deep, I think the blending is a bit too unrefined compared to other 10 yrs. Drinkable but average at best.

Just delicious. Chocolate, prunes, raisins, figs, blackberry pie, black tea. Great acidity that cuts through the sweetness. Enjoyed over two days so far and only getting better.

Noval event - noticeably lighter and more tawny color than the 64 and 66 Nacional, or even the 66 Noval VP. Bit of VA on the nose. Hmm...maybe this bottle is not the best. Palate is better with plentiful caramel, nuts and white sugar. But yet, seems a bit stripped. I feel this might not be a representative bottle. Not even close to the intensity of 63 Warre had earlier this year.

Noval event - deep, dark and heady nose. Slight medicinal cherry. Powerful Port with strong and youthful components. Lacks a bit of integration yet but great potential.

2024 bottling. I find some of the 30 & 40 year Tawnys a bit tired and faded. But this was vibrant, balanced & quite delicious. It is worth its high price. So enjoyable to savor.

At Quinta do Noval’s tasting room in Pinhão. 22% ABV. Medium brown colour. Raisins, dried cherries, coffee, walnut, peanut, salted caramel, mushroom, spices, clove furniture polish, and some VA, with good acidity, and great persistence. Nutty, and very sweet, with warming alcohol. Outshone by the Quinta do Vallado 40-Year-Old Tawny I had the other week.

Amber. Lovely dried apricot and hazelnut aromas. A tad too dense and unctuous for my liking but drinkable nonetheless. Inexpensive. USD$18. EK315

Quercus alba (Chicago, IL) : One of the best bottles of Port I've had. Pale pink in colour. There's something brilliant about the way this manifests both very youthful, sweet red fruit and shows plenty of maturity at the same time. It's mildly aldehydic, showing a herbal/almond touch and despite the high alcohol, relatively mild and delicate. Long finish with a pronounced dried fig note.

App: Pale, garnet with onion rim. Nose: medium plus intensity. Quite perfumed, floral and fig notes than expected, super harmonious and complex. Palate: sweet, very sharp and precise acidity, high alcohol obviously but really balanced and harmonious, pronounced flavor intensity, extremely rich, concentrated and ever evolving on the palate with plum, fig, toasted walnut and savoury notes unfolding one after another. The finish is extremely long and lingering with nuanced fine details coming on and on. Absolutely love it! The …

Christmas Party - Wine Club (@MichaelsPlace) : Dark plum and blackberries and still very youthful. There are some spices but the wine is currently mostly primary dark fruit. Still, a very lovely wine that will continue to improve as it evolves. Impressive!

Fragrance was floral with a hint of wildflowers. Although the color was slightly brown, as one would expect in a 70-year-old port, the flavor the finish were all outstanding represented the best of what vintage port. really can be even after 70 years. A small decant Helped clear some of the cork blackberry blackcurrant and dark cherry were all fabulous on the finish.

First of three bought recently at auction. Soft cork fell apart on opening. Colour has dropped out leaving a tawny looking port. Spirity at first but some fruit does show up and we drank it over two evenings. Simple port flavours, lacks depth and energy. How much of this is down to the port and how much down to the cork I won’t know until I open another. Drink up.

My last - a bottle that was briefly flooded 3+ decades ago but although labeless still in good nick. Opened as weather so unseasonably cool we decided port was the only answer!! Aerated decant. Fully mature. Bricking with significant meniscus. Lightly spiced charred dark fruits, gentle sweetness and balancing acidity. All elements including alcohol fully integrated and balanced. Vinous with a medium bodied finish. Held up well in decanter over three days. Past its best and for drinking up over …

Port can be so attractive when it's young that it's easy to go through your bottles of a given wine before they peak. Fortunately I have a few more of this beauty stashed away. This bottle showed a wonderful balance of sweetness and backbone while displaying a very deep color right to the rim. More pleasures to come as it ages--will ideally go back to this in 5 years or so.

From a 2002 bottling with significant sediment. Unusually light in color and body for a 40 year tawny, is it possible that this bottle was kept a bit too long? I was not very impressed with the wine, but I may have been spoiled by a recent diet of stunning old tawnies from Quinta do Mourão and Vieira de Sousa.

A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz from different vineyards in Douro. The wine is blended from different vintages that have been aging in old oak pipes , resulting in a blend with an average age of 10 years. The wine was bottled in 2023. 19,5% alcohol. Medium-deep cherry-red color with an oxidative maroon hue. Although the wine is a Tawny Port, the nose is still pretty red-toned with aromas of wizened cherries, some …

Mainly a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão; all fruit sourced from the Noval estate vineyards in Pinhão. The fruit is trodden by foot in granite lagares , then the fermentation is arrested at 19,5% ABV by fortification and the wine is moved to age in large oak casks. This wine was bottled unfiltered in 2014, at the age of approximately two years. Lot L4192. 19,5% alcohol, 89 g/l residual sugar, 4,6 g/l acidity and pH 3,78. …

floral, fruit, and herbal teas and essences, dried stone fruits, dates, figs, carob and coco powder, light roast coffee beans, incense, spring and summer potpourri, pipe tobacco, loam, black earth, and mineral ores. Greater restraint and Old World appeal than the 2013 tasted alongside. Likely to hold form for five to seven years, perhaps ten. …

A revelation of complexity. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Tawny color. Glorious aromas of toffy, chocolate dust, crème brulee. On the palate, medium-bodied, smooth, lovely acidity, ethereal, layered clouds of flavor- white chocolate, caramel, creamy honey, jam. More toffy and chocolate. No sense of alcohol. So alive. Clean. Elegant. Exquisite. It just doesn’t get much better than this! Among my most satisfying wine experiences, hands down.

I still remember tasting this on release, and it seems to be progressing, albeit slowly, along the expected track. Has the telltale Noval anise and tar notes, along with dark fruit, moderate sweetness, tannins are present but fine and have resolved well enough to make this very drinkable. For those who like their Port more resolved, this has a long way to go, probably another 20 years. But for those of us who appreciate more youthful notes, it’s in a …

By the glass. Still a spicy nose and dried lavender herbs. On the palate ending with a bitter chocolate aftertaste. Beautiful color shifting towards brick-red, immediately on the nose, a myriad of intoxicating aromas is released, elevated by the wine's significant alcohol content. Mature dark fruit, in jam form, hints of spices, cinnamon, anise, a touch of peach blossom. Fragrant noble wood, almost medicinal iodine notes.
