Xavier Vignon, Gigondas

What an interesting wine. A very high toned flavor profile - Sage brush and garrigue all the way. I absolutely loved it.

Every time I rate this, I give it one more point. Last time out, my score was suppressed by a lack of Rhone characteristics. Don't know why, but this bottle delivered those characteristics in spades. Opened just a few minutes before tasting. It needed over an hour of air to open. Black fruits. Fully integrated. Disappointing lack of herbs, garrigue, minerals, etc., but it was borderline delicious. Not too tannic, but a couple more years won't hurt.

A blend of 70 % Grenache, 20 % Mourvèdre and 10 % Syrah that was aged for 18 months, half in stainless steel and half in barriques (1/3 new oak, 1/3 second use and 1/3 third use). Dark purple. Expressive nose of dark fruits, some forest floor and a bit of Gigondas funk. Solid on the palate, lots of fruit, but plenty of backbone. Drank with beef (me) and halibut (Rosalie), worked with both. Thinking well now with an hour decant, could get better.

Tasty and probably at or very near it's peak if you prefer a little liveliness in tannins. A major difference in terms of a year from my last taste. The grenache really shines through, almost resembling a straight grenache, particularly in color and the first taste. The finish lets you know there's a little more to it than just grenache. Much better experience with this bottle. Nice cherry nose with good fruit on the palate. Seemed a little basic on the pop and pour but it evolved nicely. Paired real well with dark chocolate after dinner.

Deep purple color leads to a grapey nose mixed with pepper, smoke and raw meat(bison). The medium full body has big beautiful fruit, a hint of menthol, and cedar. Finish leasts 30 seconds and is exceptionally clean. Bravo! This killed with grilled chicken and later with dark chocolate.

Beautiful. Very dark purple and opaque. Right after opening the aroma and taste was somewhat fruity, but not a bomb at all. Also smelled a hint of fresh cut grass, corn stalks at the end of the season. It had some meat to it, but like a mild cab. A little earthy, but that faded within 15 min in the decanter. Amazing, long colorful finish. A solid bottle, delicious. Can't wait to see what it's like next year!

The 2008 Xavier Vignon Gigondas is drinking perfectly right now. The nose reveals garrigue, kirsch and a tone of creamy vanilla. The palate is pleasant with a medium long finish lasting about 25 seconds. With a nice acidity and a bit tweaky tannins, the overall impression is "good now, drink up and smile". There is no doubt though, that this is excellent craftsmanship in the vineyard and winery. Score is 88-89.
