Going strong at age 20. Medium to full bodied with plenty of blackberry and plum fruit, some spicy wood notes and tannin on the finish. Drinking well but I would wait another 5-10 years for this to integrate and gain nuance and complexity.

Nose is very tertiary, with leather, mushrooms, sous bois, plus cherry and blackcurrant. Palate is in line, with medium body and finish. A likeable old school Gevrey, paired perfectly with pheasant casserole.

Pretty classic Gevrey - deep pitched, intense cherry, and some wild bramble/berry notes. Cigar, roast meat, floral lavender, anise. Palate still fairly fresh, though I'd like a bit more acid. Big mineral, some tannin still, herbal, and cherry, moderate finish. I am not sure I'd pick it as PC material from a great vintage if blinded, but well made, enjoyable, and very good.

Best 1er Cru from Burgundy tasted @ Vins de Vigneron Strasbourg ; considering the crazy prices reached for the wines in this region a great QPR too! top nose (Gevrey-Chambertin typical, without seeing the label, I would have guessed a Chambolle Musigny). Plenty of roses and violets, red berries and plums. In the mouth cherries, sour cherries, raspberries, plums, strawberries, slightly grippy because of the tannins (anyway not too strong even at this early stage), some delicate black pepper, by …

Mouchonnat Annual Off-Tasting - Grands Jours de Bourgogne (Beaune) : Walk around tasting. Even bigger yet, but wonderfully balanced and accessible. Very good length, ending with brightness. 92+ point potential, 2025 forward.

Had next to the Jadot version of the same wine. The Jadot was beter. I was trying to figure this out when I read Jeremy Holmes's note- and I think its basically correct. The wine is both vegetal in a way that's odd for 2005, but ripe, sweet and toasty that implies an aggressive oak treatment. Not sure what to do with this- my guess is it is too disjointed to be worth cellaring- but who knows.

Slow-oxed this for 3 hours before dinner. Massive structure and fruit. Red and black fruits on the nose and some meat. Still very primary. But the palate was not giving much and this remained so throughout the night (in fact, the nose closed up somewhat as well). On the second day, some degree of aromatics had returned, but the palate was still closed. Won't touch my remaining bottle for at least 5 years (probably 10).

Lovely wine and into its drinking window. Doesn’t show any of the heat that I’ve seen in other wines from this vintage, possibly due to the cool nature of the vineyard.

I love Gevrey Chambertin and this bottle is no different. A great wine from a solid vintage and it is drinking great now. If it is possible for a wine to have both sex appeal and nobility, this one has both.

Great Burgundy, reflects its 1er cru level. Dense, fruity, great acidity and fine tannins. The LSJ was very elegant and fine, with still a strong core of fruits. No rush to drink it, will improve for sure in the next 5+ years.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75) : Dark rose red almost to rim, good clarity; dark red cherry, fairly closed, copper penny, some green notes, iron, somber, rich and dark; very rich on the palate, tannin, soft acid but muscular tannin; reminded me of a Pommard from the North.

The vintage has afforded the vineyard a bit more depth and power than is usual. The winemaker has afforded the wine a bit more oak than necessary. The wine has some dark fruits, plenty of meat and lashings of spicy wood. It is very young with some floral nuance. The tannins roll in between one’s teeth and gums and obliterates every last drop of saliva in the mouth.

Acker Auction (Waldorf Astoria - Chicago, IL) : Hard to get a read on this one. The nose had dark red fruit, subtle earth and mineral - but was so tight that the flavors were hard to really distinguish. The palate drank pretty well, though, with nice red fruit, spices and some earth. Will need more time for this 2005 to really show its stuff.

Wood spice mixed with darker black cherry and other purple fruits mark the nose here that in time, reveal hints of brioche, a bit of sauvage and wild brambly fruits. Crunchy and broad on the palate but with appropriate acidity that gives relief to richer, more powerful flavors. While this may not be the most refined rendition of Gevrey, it offers lots of weight and size (the more flamboyant, unleashed side of Gevrey) and enough acidity to project a favorable …

99 cote de nuits premier cru retrospective (michael, winnetka IL) : nose: more surface then real depth on the nose with sour cherries, dark plum tones, and some brown spices taste: light and easy with semi bright tones for burgundy of sour cherry, brown spices, raspberries, and some pine tones overall: a nice and easy drinking gevrey but with not that much depth to it. Solid acidity backed up by a easy sour cherry attack and dark plum finish
