Masterclass German Chardonnay (Zurich) : Calcareous slate | Burgundy clones | 65% new oak | pH 3.4 | 14.0% alc (the highest in this tsting) Ringer. Ripe and oaky - vanilla, coconut, molasses, yellow fruit. Powerful but disjointed. May improve with bottle age, but too much oak and alcohol at present. Hmm, tasting this and Adank made me question whether slate soil terroir (Schiefer) can deliver the same results as limestone for Chardonnay. 89-91

Top of elegant Chardonnay. Refined, fresh, complex and long. Here it is shown how to make a superb balanced chardonnay wine, both classical influences and vibrant acidity. If you like power you will be disappointed.

Pale gold color, the nose brings up citrus notes, green apple, white flowers and wet stones. The palate plays along the same lines, with a slight toastiness on top, pronounced minerality (wet stones, but also some salinity), and some almond and vanilla, which is surprising since I assumed this wine would be relatively oak-light. The acidity is vibrant and makes for a very balanced yet structured wine – Gantenbein delivered again! 94+

Drank 2019 and 2017 tonight. 2017 was slightly better than 2019, more lively and fresher. But this is a massively overrated and overpriced Chardonnay. There are many better values in Burgundy. For the same price you buy a top Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru.

Epic Whites 2024 (Kolabo) : First flight. Noticeable oak, vanilla, flint and lemon rind on bouquet and palate. Palate slightly lean and austere but had good acidity, power and fruit concentration. Thought this was definitely chardonnay but couldn't place this in US or Burg. Completely missed out that this could have been from Gantenbein

The small producer nestled in the Swiss Alps, Gantenbein. Been wanting to try for a couple of years now after seeing Wine Terminator drink it nightly... Purchased the bottle at Denver Wine Merchant, extremely small allocations sold in the US, got lucky to get my hands on some. Overall, wasn't blown away by the bottle. Herbal on the nose with still some oak undertones, almost minty but not quite. Nice acidity with a lightness in the body and mouth watering …

A sleek smooth feel on the palate and yet at the same time, giving some texture on the finish (as if a contradiction, but...). Electric. Very good. Perhaps more defined than the 2017's?

Small Tusk tasting with the proprietor (Napa Grill (Zurich)) : Warm-up for a small Tusk tasting with co-founder Tim Martin. Dense and opulent with a more intense fruit profile showing green apple and citrus. A mineral and smoky overlay. Compared to the 2020 this was simpler aromatically. The acidity was fresh and crisp, but with the palate overall not as balanced and refined as the 2020.

I can safely say this is my first time with a Swiss Chardonnay. Served blind.. some around the table guess Meursault. It was nicely done and consistent with 09 vintage, showing riper exotic fruit a bit on finish. A Swiss success !

No expectations – Swiss wine is a rare experience, seldom had outside of Switzerland. Color is golden. Very swarthy and intense nose with a clear New World element – but from the heat versus from a particular style… the heat comes from the warm 2009 vintage, which was a challenge across Europe to make age-worthy white Chardonnay. Golden colour, clear. Hints of bread, ripe white fruit. A bit of VA. Fine at times, other times not well focused. A bit heavy on the palate, one feels the warm vintage and the very ripe fruit. But the acidity is there. Perhaps it just needs time to settle. At present it is not well balanced.
