Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets

Love this one - body is deeper than many other burgundies (4/5) - nice purple/opaque; acidity is well balanced (3/5); tannins and sugar are mild (2-3/5); alcohol is modest. Deep berries (black, blue), some cassis, tobacco, nice minerality. Will definitely buy more.

From magnum, this was a very nice rich burgundy. Not so much about finesse or perfume, but deep and rich. Moderate complexity and went great with different types of dishes. At slagmolen. I slightly preferred the rosso di montalcino from Poggio Di sotto we had afterwards, but both wines were fabulous

Decanted about 1-2 hours and served blind. Wow, powerful yet elegant, rich dark fruit, not overly extracted, balanced acidity. Did not feel the hot year as mentioned by other reviewers, maybe i got lucky. This was called blind as a Rousseau, and i can honestly see why, this was just beautiful stuff.

The amazing thing about this wine is that I had it two weeks ago, sprayed some argon in it and today it is still going strong. Side by side with 2012 Mortet En Champs. Powerful, concentrated, not over-extracted. Sweet red fruit dominated. Very primary. Slightly spicy after two hours. Would be interesting to see how it evolves over time.

Wine is 14% alcohol. My earlier bottles were able to mask the high alcohol due to the freshness of the fruit. Now, as the wine ages a bit, it’s definitely on the hot side. Wonder if it is going to sleep?

Totally agree with two prior reviewers. This definitely punches above its weight, with a great red fruit nose, broad and deep on the palate with good spice. Loses nothing in the mid range and has a great finish. Had a bottle of this just to try last night, and went out and bought the remaining 11 bottles of the case today. Worth seeking out.

Popped and poured. Medium/dark purple color; a touch of spicy bramble on the nose. Delicious, round, mouth-filling red fruit up front. Hard candy, and sweet cherry and strawberry notes. Mid-palate hits the back of the tongue fully, with savory tones. There is a bit of tannic structure and it should have a good 10-15 years ahead of it, but since it tastes so great right now, why wait? This wine continues to impress.

One of the best noses on any pinot I have tasted from 2018. Gorgeous balance of fruit and earth that is reminiscent of aged Barolo. Great nose of raspberries, red cherries and spices. When PnP, the palate is full of intense raspberries, red cherries, lots of red fruits, rhubarb, minerality and a touch of earthiness. Long and powerful finish. It shows great consistency with the previous few vintages.

30-35% new oak. From old vines in En Motrot, En Derée, Combe de Dessus, Au Vellé and En Champs. This 2018 Mes Cinq Terroirs offers a sweet and scented array of dark berries and lifted wood spices. Juicy mixed fruits with spicy toasted wood. Good energy and freshness with a lovely perfume that saturates on the palate. Very lovely. (85/100)
