Opened and aerated for 3 hours before serving. Ruby. Aromas of beef broth, smoke, and ripe dark fruit. Medium to full bodied, wonderfully caressing, meaty, and sappy. Deep, earthy, ripe but not overly sweet dark cherry and blueberry, leather, licorice, and furry tannins. Wow, I haven’t had such a rollicking, chewy, old fashioned Burgundy in quite some time-a true titan and the rare Pommard to reach this level. While it is probably a good 10-15 years away from full maturity, …

Had a deep dark cherry red. Rich ripe dark berries, rich, bright floral intensity, warm earth, sweetly nutty. Supple, dark spice, dark berries, lightly earthy, lots of fine but gripping tannins. Fully mature, with intense flavours, delicious drinking.

Wonderful burgundy, normal I prefer vosne or Chambertin, Pommard as I know is a little bit dump, earthy, like this wine. But surprisingly high quality, the wine maker made the best. You cannot drink easy wines all the time, not a wine for beginners and it it great to explore the possibilities of this area. Only 94 rating because it is not vosne or.... Drink it cold (16°), big burgundy riedel glas, no decanting, drinking it over 2 hours, lovley.

Dark fruit that I find just shy of jammy. Started with a pronounced resinous, Christmas spice oak note that faded over time. There is a dark earthy, funky reductive note with some bitter chocolate. Moderate acid. Some light, fine tannin. There is reasonable balance for a 2009. Obvious high quality but lacks character and is rather boring. I would expect the 100% whole cluster ferment would bring more savoury, herbal interest. I am going to wait 3-4 years before opening …

Not uber interesting or complex, but still there is a lively monolithic black fruit profile.

Mature garnet. Fresh, rich, savoury nose of complex dark spice, concentrated floral scents and a savoury, masculine character of charcuterie and charred meats. Very concentrated savoury palate with Barolo-like intensity, tar, black olive tapenade, soy, cola, intense salinity, masculine and robust, with initially very prominent tannin that does recede with considerable air to give the wine a slightly more feminine lilt, but really the finish is very long and masculine. Probably one to wait another 10 years?

BYOB dinner NOTK (Supernova hotel, Rotterdam) : Rustic, hint of barnyard, black fruit, cherries, leather. Still very nice, not yet over its peak

Surprisingly fruit forward. Almost jammy. Has acid and still a bit of tannin. But lacking structure. Overall disappointing

Popped and poured. This was really good from the start. Showing sweet fruit and the character of somewhat ripe 2009 vintage along with some secondary development. Dinking well now so not sure why one would continue to age these.

Ripe blackberries and apricots, solidly tooth-gripping tannins, low-med acid. 13.5% Alc. A big rustic bruiser of a Burgundy, not super complex, but a tasty glass. Approachable now, and years of life to go.

Big fruit, salt, dryish- decent, but I liked the 09’ Anne Gros pezerolles much better- fresher fruit, better balance.

Burgundy - with or without stems? (Zoom!) : Picked very late, but 100% whole bunch. Really dark colour, especially as it's the oldest wine tonight - presumably rather extractive winemaking. That comes through on the rich, beetrooty, jammy nose, which reminds me of some other 2009s I haven't loved. Bitter cherry and chocolate on the palate. Pretty tannic still. Needs time: both the mouthfeel and the flavours benefited from air.

Drinking after opening and it’s intensely earthy, spicy and tannic. After sitting open for a few hours it became perfectly balanced. Spice and earth with dark fruit - a long finish.

This is a BIG earthy Burgundy. Immediately earthy on nose w brush and dirt - somewhat overpowering at first. Palate wasn’t accessible early but smoothed our incredibly over an hour.

Certainly a more powerful style when comparing to Lejeune’s Pommard wine side by side - more tannin, structure, and slightly creamy finish. A well made wine and I think it has good ageing potential, but I prefer Lejeune style a bit more. Background - Domaine de Courcel produces wines with quite traditional methods. Wines undergo a warmer fermentation, with >three weeks of maceration and 2-3 punchings per day, resulting in higher extraction of fruit, colour and tannins. Little reliance on …

Weekly tasting group RWP #291: Burgundy 2009 (@ VD) : Beautiful and quite intense bouquet with sweet spices, red and dark berries and well integrated oak. On the palate a slightly sweet start and also soft and fresh acidity. Cherries, licorice, chocolate, vanilla and oak. Sweet spices and round tannin. Overall a very pleasant and friendly wine. 91 - 92

Intense, spice nose, still tannic. Powerful wine and I agree with others who have said it needs more time.

Way too young, very tannic, so much oak I thought I was in a carpentry workshop, but gorgeous black cherry fruit and a hint of liquorice and gingerbread spice. Very drinkable but not a whole heap of complexity. Wait 10+ years at least.

Close to Clos : Rhubarb, violet and blackcurrant. Feels more approachable than a previous bottle, with the ripe fruit and the tannins still asserting themselves, though maybe a bit more in balance this time. Another 10-15 years should do no harm.

Dumplings and some nice bottles : Brawny - black fruits, black cherry and earth. Pommard classic tannins show through, the fruit is bold and muscular. Give it 15 years probably!

Very youthful appearance with a medium purple/ruby core and a pale ruby rim. Ripe, youthful nose, purple and black fruit, notes of smoke. Ripe, dark but brooding but at the same time a touch of floral perfume especially with time in glass. Medium/full on the palate, ripe black and purple fruit, smoke, vanilla, deep and ripe with soft tannins with blackcurrant and a touch of smoke on the long finish. Excellent.

La Paulée de San Francisco - The Verticals (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA) : Tasting, brief note. Red and black fruit with great concentration and balance already. Long, sweet and approachable already. Much more forward and pleasurable vs the 2010 tasted just before, but I think the 2010 will be slightly better longer-term.

Brilliant ruby core/amber meniscus. Meaty and stemmy aromas lead to a tangy cherry and currant fruit core. Big limestone terroir blast arrives mid-palate alongside firm, stemmy tannins. This wine is unbelievably fresh, lilting and delicious. I can't believe this is a '78! It performs more like a wine 15 years younger.
