Medium yellow. Pleasant petrol and stone fruit aromas. Medium weight. Dry but not austere. Fruit is alive and mixes well with the earth that runs through the palate, but it is lacking in acidity and energy. One of the most dull bottles of Clos Ste. Hune I've ever had. I would not hold bottles any longer since it seems fully or beyond fully mature.

Served blind alongside Frederic Emile 2010. Opened 1 hr. Musty, took several more hours for it to blow off and let the amazing aromatics shine. Incredibly complex and long finish. FE was ready after an hour and great value.

Riesling SWAG 2025 (Restaurant Hobenköök, Hamburg) : Glass: Zwiesel Duo White wine Clear, pale golden color. Fine, muted/locked in nose, very elegant, fine and herbaceous. On the palate with a great texture, laser sharp precision, wonderful depth and density. Great energy and tension, elegant and balanced. Long finish. This wine has amazing potential. Tasting it today has just scientific purpose. It is a (beautiful) baby and way more will come in 10+ years. 94+++

15x Riesling (2001-2019, mostly GGs) : A great opportunity to taste through a wide range of dry Rieslings, mostly Grosses Gewächs, across producers and vintages. The tasting confirmed my impression that these wines truly hit their stride after about 15 years. In their youth, the fruit tends to dominate, while the minerality stays in the background, and the overall balance often feels off, especially when sharp acidity is not yet matched by a generous mouthfeel. The top wines for me …

The battle of the ‘94s - with Chris, John, Justine, Marc and Liz (Colonial Court, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand) : Wine of the night in a raring that included Perus, Harlan, and grand cru Burgundy. At 32, this has the lake straw colour of a wine bottled the year before! The refinement of the nose and palate are off the charts (very notable after having had a Carrick Dry Riesling from 2017 earlier that day) , with the bottle age …

Apex Alsatian Riesling. Opened and waited c.30 min. Nose at opening was a bit muted but open up. Mineral, delicately floral, slightly citrus/lime, long persistence. No heady or sweet notes. Paired impeccably with yakitori (chicken breast, thigh). Extremely impressive wine. Consider pairing with lobster, scallops or veal.

Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette) : This was honeycomb and some sort of spice note that I couldn’t quite place but which made the wine quite interesting. There’s a darker note to this and more of a mouthful at this point. Rich and sweet. Nice wine.

Touche de pétrole mais très noble, la texture riche sans excès me charme pas mal, acidité un peu en retrait mais il y en a encore, belle longueur, très bon mais trop cher au prix d’aujourd’hui. Touch of petroleum but more on the noble and classy side, texture is great and charming, rich yet some acidity still, very good but way too expensive today.

Musty mushrooms nose freshening with air, honeyed and floral. Petrol. Lovely rich texture, impression of sweetness. Lovely depth & balance. Ripe orchard fruits. Overall seemed a tiny bit tired (last coravined glass of a bottle) but it freshened up a lot in the glass and probably would have continued to do so if I hadn’t drunk it.

Quelle longueur! Beau vin assurément, grand riesling, genre gardien du temple…

Beautiful acidity and piercing minerality combined with apricot, mandarin, peach and a hint of petrol. After a few hours gained a lot more weight which seemed to overpower the acidity and minerality. The balance improves on day 2. So this might still need some time.

Right from the start, complex nose of lemon curd, hawthorn, minerals. Excellent freshness, medium bodied, not heavy, stays precise. I really like this showing which is more precise, almost like a German Riesling, than the often a but plumb Alsace Rieslings. Great wine. 95-96

Shimmering gold in colour - very attractive. Such a rich, honeyed nose, with a touch of botrytis and intermingling high-toned aromas. As others have noted, the experience on the palate is startling, as this is bone dry. I slightly preferred the nose, but the experience in the mouth is also excellent: incredibly long and gourmand, sweet decayed apple, some bitterness, and a distinct chewiness - wonderful structure. Although this is superb wine and I am delighted to have tasted it, …

Q2 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varietals (The Apt) : Wine #11: All of the wines I think would have benefited from some food, but for some reason this one more than the others seemed to be crying out a bit for it. Can tell there's a touch of age here. Some toasted caramel. Lower acidity and yet smooth and easy to drink. Just somehow seemed to want a partner in crime. (2 pennies)

Magnum Dinner for the Ages (and Aged)-Ponsot, Chave... (La Tour d'Argent, Paris) : Magnum. Full yellow, slightly deeper than the Champagne. Secondary Riesling perfume, vegetal notes, and more peach with air. A lighter, more delicate Clos Ste. Holiday dinner organized by Ken Brown with many great wines! (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.) : Power, poise and vibrancy. This wine is still a bit tight, and yet shows such refinement and substance while being elegant and dry. It has been said that Clos Sainte Hune is the best Riesling in the world, and the 2005 argues in favor of that supposition. Far too young, in my opinion, to truly appreciate, but just breaking into a youthful drinking window. …

Needs a good 30 minutes post open to get its stride and develop . Would not suggest decanting but just let it breath a bit. Very much a Riesling, light caramel notes, light petrolly, good fruit core. Firm core of polished acidity, elegant and vibrant still, layered and a class act. Gives a feeling at times it has residual sugar but really it's just the evolution of it we think. 93
