Balius Wines Xanthos Label

Beautiful garnet color. Just beginning to show some lighter color around the rim. Aromas of strawberry liquor, red fruits. Same flavors as the aromas, with nice structure. Plenty of fruit and spice. Has a decent length and mid-palate. Plenty of flavor and character while remaining light and fresh. Really nice!

Different, but not in a bad way.

I found this to be flat and grapey. No depth at all. Should be fine to delagze the pan after searing lamb chops, but I'd not insult the meal by serving it.

Bought this on a whim from GarysWine.com. The site compared it to a Zinfandel blend, like Prisoner. The Zin in this blend is very muted and is appears to be much more Syrah based. Once I let go of my predispositions, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The other notes accurately summarize the wine. Very soft and smooth. Cherries, berries, hint of vanilla. Rates as Very Good.

Very nice, subtle syrah notes. Not for Robert Parker types but perfect if you like more balanced wines.

Opened a couple hours. The nose of soft berry and fruit, mellow. The taste followed that, soft and smooth with nice finish. Had it with prime rib and another good Calif Cab. I think this Xanthos was better. Had enough tannins to stay up with the meal. Big cab lovers would find this a little wimpy, but I really like the roundness. (Sounds like I'm "nice-ing" it to death but we all liked it with this meal)
