Karthauserhof, Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Riesling Spatlese, Mosel

Immense concentration and perfect balance. Lime cordial, gasoline, ginger, freesias, salt. It is an enormous wine yet manages to be precise and perfectly representative of Mosel Riesling. Incredibly long. A fabulous wine.

Missing just a little zip, but otherwise this is damn near perfect for a Spatlese. Karthauserhof always delivers the archetype of Mosel Riesling. These wines are pure, clean and focused. This was no exception with a kaleidoscopic palate and a nose of petrol and stone fruit. Man, I love this stuff and will keep buying it forever.

Amazingly crystalline and crisp with a strong mineral streak underlying the lime fruit. Off-dry and delicate this was taut and tense. The diesel forecourt characters were held well in check despite the oily texture, followed by a delightful lingering finish. Couldn’t believe it was 15 years old and still going strong. CHP 92 pts

Casual wines at Zai Shun : Not a producer that I am familiar with but a fresh, classic rendition of Spätlese without any prädikat creep. Restrained for the warm vintage.

I never had a Spätlese like this the residual sugar is completely integrated now. It feels dry with a lot of concentration. on the nose typical mosel minerality, no petrol, no tropical fruits surprising

Germany (Must and Lees, N1) : Dark amber. Very advanced, possibly even some oxidisation and smells slightly of glue. There are traces of tropical fruit but this particular bottle must be well past its best. Not very enjoyable if I am honest.

Rocking and rolling eleven years post-vintage. This is the eight bottle out of a case I've drunk since release. The flavor profile is rounding out nicely and early sweetness tempering. It went great with some very lightly spiced Indian food. So much goodness for a wine costing $25 on release.

Concentrated tropical fruit, tinned rather than fresh. Some good slatey moments on the attack. Very tasty and extremely easy to drink. Nice evolution with a bit of waxy wool showing but this is still mainly primary. Could just do with a little more lift.

Apple, white flower, melon and a little beeswax coming through on the nose. Rich and round, honey and lemon, the acidity still there but in the background with richer fruit now the fore. Beautiful with a marinated pork stir fry. Lingering.

Lots of juicy citrus fruits here, lime in Vietnamese noodles brings that out nicely, clearly off dry, rounder than I would like, which makes me keep this a little cooler than usual.

My prior bottle was a bit over two years ago (November 2014) and the wine has evolved quite positively in that time. Opened at 47F, warming to 52F, medium bodied and 8.5% ABV. Full and easy, this seems to have sacrificed tension but gained richness and lushness since last bottle two years ago. Some beeswax notes also starting to emerge. If this isn't an outstanding wine, then it's at least a very good one.

This was a very interesting spatlese, different from many of the others I have tried. Strong slate, mineral and floral notes on the nose. Medium bodied and displaying the trademark spatlese richness throughout. Plenty of fruit, but more focused towards the lemon and grapefruit end of the spectrum at this stage. Acacia honey dominating at first on the nose, merging into something herbal and mint-like. Only a little petrol in the background. Green apple, earthy aromas, and a bit of caramel on the palate. Not your clean and lean Ruwer-style Riesling, but quite fruity with relatively low acidity, due to the vintage. Will still be good in ten years.

Medium clear gold color. Powerful, aged nose of honey, orange syrup, sugar crystal, and ripe mango. Off dry and fuller body with a viscous texture, the palate explodes with flavors of dried peach, honey, candied lemon, and nectarine. Super long finish, still balanced enough with a certain crispness to cut the sweetness. Outstanding.

2003 Dry Riesling - Ten years after : Interesting colour, deep yellow with some green, like a faded photo. In the nose, it's slightly flat with some honey, nuts, Mango, Apple, a touch of orange. On the palate, it seems a bit worn out, yet nicely mineralic, almost dry with only mild sweetness. Quite nice.

served with lobster on new year's eve - rieslings always pair well with crustaceans. This wine has a very good balance of sweetness and minerality and a slightly reserved palate that does not come out a strong on the after taste.

Bright silver-straw. Intense nose of rich grapefruit. Showed even better four days after opening. Lovely rich, confected tropical palate with fresh acidity. Delicious to drink now, but I'm going to save my other bottle for quite a while.

Lightly sweet, lightly bodied, pleasant and fruity through and through. I'm writing the note a while after I drank the wine, so I'm not prepared to go into specifics, but I do remember I liked it.

Pale lemon with a melon filled, almost grassy nose. For me, lacking a bit of sweet fruit for a spatlese; full of citrus fruit, grapefruit and a touch of bitter orange pith.

Initially it seemed tired but it got better with air. The wine retains a nice core of acidity but there's not much to balance that against. Besides the acidity the dominant flavor was a burnt marzipan.Not much on the nose. Balanced and a decent finish. Definitely seems to be on a downhill slope and probably would have been better a couple of years ago when I bought it. A Rudi Wiest import.

Juicy apple and some petrol on the nose. Precise, delicious green apple palate. Refreshing yet off dry.

aromas of yellow stone fruit, apples, white flowers, slate and a little petrol. concentrated yet focused with very good acidity to give nice balance to the intensity. great length shows off beautiful slatey minerality. definitely young and will undoubtedly get better with time, but not closed -- fun to enjoy now.

Nose of apple and white stone fruit, with noticeable petrol and strong mineral note. Palate has white grape, apple, pineapple and good minerality. Not as clearly delineated as it might have been, and I can see why some feel the acidity is low, though I thought it was perfectly in balance. Overall, one of the better wines I've drunk from this vintage.
