Opened in the morning for the tasting at noon. The cork was ok, but the first pour was a bit weird. I hoped that it needed some air, but at noon it had not improved. It was still drinkable but kind of harsh. Too bad that it was so very lightly, but clearly corked.

A little underwhelming based on expectations. The hue shows quite a bit of evolution, which is not unusual for nebbiolo and doesn't bother me. I expected a bit more complexity and a balance more on the cool climate side and didn't find this here. Frankly, not that different from a Spanna from Vallana. This was from a magnum, so I expected a little more freshness and focus. The finish is quite nice with good textural richness. I will open some …

100% Nebbiolo harvested from the old (average vineyard age is 50 years) 4-hectare Rocce Rosse vineyard - named after the red rocks in the soil - found in the rocky Valtellina subzone of Sassella. The wine is fermented spontaneously and macerated with the skins for 30 days in old 5000-liter casks made of oak, acacia and chestnut. Typically aged for 4 years in old, untoasted 5500-liter botti casks made of oak, acacia and chestnut and a year in concrete tanks. …

On top of all the notes of nutmeg after was opened for while were predominant. What a great Nebbiolo chiavennasca even after 23 years!

Drank like a Burgundy with an extra dose of Alpine acidity and minerality. In a nice place. Light on its feet and not tired at all. Held up well on day two but was ready to drink after an hour or so decant.

Light red color. Aromas of red cherries, dried herbs and wood spices. Light-bodied, nicely-structured fruit in the mouth with well-integrated tannins. After about 20 minutes of air, somewhat elegant and persistent on the palate. I found this well-regarded wine a bit disappointing and in the latter part of its peak drinking period. Not a good value.

Opened the evening before and drunk over dinner with friends. Classic and elegant, this was good from the get go and even better 24h later.

Lifted, precise, rose petals, red cherry. If you took red fruit flesh and made a fruit leather that was stretched so thin, you could see right through it. Like great Barolo spread thin as a film. Beautiful tension and minerality. Terrific.

Lovely nose of leather, dried herbs, and cedar. A very light rendition of Riserva. Licorice on the palate along with bright fruit and significant acidity -- not your typical Sassella. Delicious.

"Amore, come ti pare questo vino?" "Mmmmh, non è male, ma sa di speck" Ok, stappi una bottiglia del 1999 di un gran nebbiolo della Valtellina (remoto anno in cui hai iniziato ad uscire con tua moglie), vino comprato in tempi non sospetti, vino che negli anni è diventato quasi di culto, lo hai affinato in cantina per più di una decade, ... e questa è la reazione della compagna di una vita. Enomaniaco, te lo meriti! Quello che fai …

Ethereal nose of dried herbs and cedar. Bright fruit with bright acidity and an overall smooth palate, with modest tannic notes and tar towards the end. For a riserva sassella a remarkably light rendition of the nebbiolo grape. I had this down to drink by this year, but I'm going to push it forward at least to 2107, since there is no reason to drink them up this year. Tasted great with some Sottocenere truffle cheese.

Very pure and dry on the finish. Fruit was hidden so the wine came off a bit astringent.

Light ruby-- imagine pave with light in between the stones. A whiff of high toned red fruit, dried rose petal and candied violet. But then all fragrances of earth, mushroom, leather and tar. Smooth tannins and long finish. Anyone who enjoys the mature Nebbiolo profile in a lighter style will like these wines. Great match for roast chicken.

Doubt this wine will appeal to the masses -- but it appeals to me - the nose whore. Ruby red at the core with bricking at the rim. Delicate, ethereal nose filled with typical (wonderful) mature nebbiolo notes - cherry skins, spice, rose, leather, mushroom, herbs. Smooth attack and texture. On the palate the HIGH acidity and grippy tannins really kick in. With a little more depth of flavor, this would not bother me in the least. But without it, …

Finale lungo e cangiante. Vino molto elegante, assai piacevole e di grande bevibilità. Può sembrare strano per un 1999, …

Drunk the 1999 and 1996 together over dinner with friends and blind at the beginning. The color of both was brick red with orange rims. The 1996 showing a little bit more age. At first we liked more the 1999, which had a finer nose and palate with more structure, and in fact was drunk faster (so that from memory it is now more difficult to remember details). But with time the 1996 came out very nice too. At first …
