Served from six liter. Dried cassis, cedar chest, graphite, and the cool shade of tobacco leaf, all of it lifted by a faint ribbon of mint. With air, a sweet, almost autumnal note emerges—dried cherry, rose petal, and mellow leather, the kind you only get from mature claret that’s kept itself intact. On the palate it’s silky, medium-bodied, and poised, with tannins now melted into a fine suede texture. The fruit is still present—blackcurrant, black plum, and redcurrant preserves—but the …

Ian’s 1995 Bordeaux (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London) : Black and red fruits here, cedar, some smoky mineral and also some toasty oak notes. Medium bodied, attractive fruit, touch of vanilla, slight leafy edge, some firm underlying tannin, slightly lean medium/good length finish. Decent but probably one to drink up.

Ian A’s 95 Claret @ Piccolino (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London) : Mid ruby. Lighter, brighter red fruit. A slight leafiness and freshness here. Nice line. Fresh and ready. ***1/2

Bordeaux 1995 tasting dinner at Piccolino London EC2. Mature nose of milk chocolate and dusty pews, this wine is fully mature and holding up but while it is superficially pleasant claret, it has little to distinguish itself; it is pretty fuzzy/lacking in precision and is on a slow boat to China

1995 Bordeaux (Piccolino Exchange Square, London) : Usually one of my go to Bordeaux but I didnt really get on with this bottle. Very toasty nose, slightly roasted fruit. Not a great start. Better flavour, hint of bramble fruit but mostly redcurrant, tannic and stayed a bit skinny. Ok but didnt love it.

Decanted for 3 hours and I would never have guessed this to be 29 years old. Raspberries, chocolate and liquorice with an almost opulent, lush mouthfeel. Still so youthful with a long life ahead of it. Glad I have two more left. I would hold.

Mid ruby to dense garnet. This has come on nicely. Deep to mid red fruit, mulberry with a touch of raspberry coming through. Gentle sandlewood and cedar in the background. Some florality, but by no means full-on Margaux. Feels as resolved as its likely to get, harmonious and silky but the fruit is unlikel6 to outlive the remaining though almost fully resolved structure, retaining a sense of 95. Drink now and over the next five to ten. Seems to be …

Did not decant. Cherry, cassis, slight blackberry, nice cedar, earth, slight leather, nice spice, good acidity. Lingering finish. Bit dry - some tannins. Nice complexity. Really enjoyable. 92+

95 Bordeaux @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, Guildhall) : Plum duff nose, then more classic left bank cedar and sandlewood. Red fruited, nice line. Attractive. A strictness to the finish to keep things in check. This has really come on since a previous bottle in 2006. Lovely. ****

Another 95 claret drinking well. At first pour, I had doubts as this smelled green and tasted a little dilute and overly dry. An hour or two in the decanter worked its magic, as the wine sweetened and deepened a lot. Cooler, restrained stuff which makes it very easy to drink. Once dinner was served this really began to shine, leaving a classic, food-friendly, earthy, old school wine with plenty of soul. Will hold for ~15 years, but in the …

Really positively impressed - was not expecting much from this vintage - but drinking beautifully now - if anything, still a little youthful!

Beautifully matured Left Bank in ist final drinking window. Generous Cedar, Plum, leather and port sweetness in the nose. Well structured and elegant, built on ripe casis and cherry, leather, chocolate, plum, cedar and spices. Drink now.

Still in the drink zone. Auburn rim, a bit shorter on the palate than I might have hoped for, but still balanced, refined, a pleasure to drink.

What a nice surprise to see this bottle in perfect shape after 25 years, and after ups and downs over that time. Oppulent cedar, raspberries, liquorice, mentholic and earthy notes, with silky layers of plum and other sweet aromas, to provide a complex, yet balanced structure. A true drinking pleasure. Our bottle did not give the impression of decline, but better enjoy now.

Still very solid, although likely past its prime. Opened up some in the glass, so probably should have been decanted.

Opened, decanted and poured within 20 minutes. As expected, beyond peak maturity, but still very pleasant to drink. Colour is medium maroon with browning on edges. An initial hint of oxidisation on the nose soon passes, then moderate fruit follows. The palate shows obvious ageing, smooth, still plenty of blackcurrant fruit, some treacle, but little earthiness. Overall, a good experience.

Old school Bordeaux from an OK but not great year. Still plenty of life left in it. Big nose - not much sign of blackcurrants, more animal / earth. Palate somewhat astringent, plenty of plum fruit and acid to balance assertive tannins.

Cork was a bit musty, but not soaked through. Cassis and cigarbox on the nose. Palate just a hint of that lagune black raspberry, tart cherry, cassis, some spice and a bit of drying tannin. Light-medium bodied; subtle but lingering finish; needed a couple hours to open up. Good pairing with pan roasted chicken with sauce chasseur made with a rich beef demi over basmati rice.

La Lagune 1995 represents a lighter, traditional style of bordeaux with less alcohol, medium to high acid and some rough edges. In a blind tasting it could easily be mistaken as a traditional rioja as e. g. Tondonia Riserva. The wine has aged gracefully and delivers a bouquet of cassis, leather, mushrooms and spices. In the mouth still some fruit left, spicy, fresh and with tension. Not very deep and a bit short, but - at least for my taste …
