Bought for 170 Rand (about $12 US) at the local Checkers; best WSr Pro is 198. Because of its youth, decanted 3h before consumption. Good purple color; fragrant red fruits; good mouthfeel, moderately complex. Tasty, almost delicious. A Bdx blend this vintage: 39 CS, 37 CF, 24 M. 2015 vintage

South African wine tour - Day four (Stellenbosch) : Slightly burnt/ripe black fruits, sweet spice, dense, a little sweaty Ribena, toast. The juiciness feels a little forced, the black fruit is alcoholically warm, the tannins are relatively soft but drying. For me it's a bit out of whack.

Popped and poured. After two bottles of pricier and very delicious SA red Bordeaux blends, we opened this at the close of dinner, and found it as delicious as the first two, but with a more impressive QPR. Highly recommended. Drink or hold.

2007 vintage

Absolute velvet in the mouth with a bouquet of smoke, dark fruit, earth, and purple flowers. Silky smooth on the palate with excellent balance and flavours of black fruit and ash/earthiness. The finish was long with the flavours continuing on and on. Right at its peak! Drink now or within the next couple of years.

2001 vintage

This has matured beautifully. While it certainly expresses South African terroir, it does so insistently but unobtrusively. Black and red fruit, spice, a little rust. One of the best values in red Bordeaux blends. A hit.

2007 vintage

Drank at Ian's House from his cellar on 12/27/15. Color: Garnet with brownish edges. Nose/Smell: Chalk, some cedar wood, maybe plum and riper red fruits. Palate/Taste: Light red fruits. A light dry. Slightly tangy in the finish from the Pinotage acidity. Light tannins (4/10) and moderate body. Opinion: Has done wonderfully for 14 years!

An excellent red blend, though not Bordeaux-like: the Pinotage component, with its rusty tart fruit, takes care of that. This it's its own thing, unmistakeably South African, and a delicious blend in it's own right. The softer fruit is a little more forward on day one; the Pinotage element is more assertive on day two.

P & P, which is inevitably a mistake with South African reds: they always benefit from at least an hour of air. Two of us on a bottle, others sipping a NZ SB, which admitedly goes better much with chicken coconut green curry. Deep crimson in the glass; a nose of rust, bark, and blackberries. Elegant and powerful. Great value.

Vinturied into a decant and began consumption. A late-evening bottle. Medium to heavy body. Red and black fruit with cocoa and rusty nails. Very long finish. An excellent and affordable Bordeaux blend from South Africa, and recommended as a great QPR and a nice way to visit Stellenbosch. Color: Opaque purple hued red. Nose: Plums, mint, a hint of bell pepper and aninteresting note of bacon fat. Palate: Full bodied and lush. Pleasant palate coating tannins. There is a sappy sweet core of plumy fruit with a chocolaty dimension and some spice on the back end. I really like this wine and, at $17, I like it even more.

Double decanted for three hours, served at room temperature. Color: Deep Red. Nose: Blueberry, Black Currant, Vanilla, Smoke. Palate: see nose. Finish: Medium. Tannins: Medium. Alcohol: 14.5 % showing a little. Full bodied mouthfeel with initial dark fruit. Smoky mid-palate transitions into a warming finish with oaky spiciness. The nose reminds me of left bank Bordeaux although being more sugarfied and smoky. On the palate that image shatters with an approach towards the new world. South African reds are interesting …

Fresh oak and purple berries on the nose. Dark fruit saturates the palate with uniform confidence. Drying, classic tannins on the lengthy, satisfying finish. An all-around excellent wine. Dont know if I'll ever find this wine again but I'm glad to have had an opportunity to try it.

New Year's Week 2008/9; 12/28/2008-1/4/2009 (Northwoods) : Perhaps the best bottle I've had of this so far. Started out with the same tinge of green I noticed in a prior bottle. That faded away, leaving chocolate and smoky fruit on the nose, carrying to a medium-full bodied wine on the palate, where the smoke and chocolate flavors are somewhat reminiscent of the spices in a dark, Tex-Mex bean soup. Cesare's Group (Home - Minnesota) : Served blind. Brian and Nate originally identified as a Bordeaux. It does have a lot of similarities, though with an added smokiness from the Pinotage. Fully resolved palate, with a fairly velvety mouthfeel. Probably time to start drinking the rest of these.

Less depth and complexity than I remembered from the last btl. Also less of the typical SA character. A bit disappointing given past experiences and expectations. However, G fawned over it and would have scored it in the 90's.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Scored an 88 at that point. Very earthy on both nose and palate. Good match for pungent, soft cheeses right on a "pop and pour" basis. An hour later, some of the earthiness and pungent notes have mellowed considerably. There's still a small touch of the "scorched earth" smokiness from the pinotage to identify this as a SA effort, but it is becoming smooth and refined nevertheless. This is a very impressive red blend from S. Africa. Toasty with full blackberry, ripe plum fruit, Starbucks brew, mocha oak and asphalt on the nose. Soft Merlot tannins counter the classy Old World styled acid to give this wine a beautiful finish of length and linger. ($20) Dinner wth Peter Spann: 41% Cabernet, 29% Merlot, and 30% Pinotage. Dry smelling nose of cedar and red berry fruit. Nice, plush, mid-weight wine on the palate. Funny, the nose suggests a bit of Pinot Noir, but this is clearly fruitier and more evocative of a Bordeaux-varietal blend. Not bad.
