Kilikanoon, Mort's Block Riesling, Clare Valley

Fine pale yellow. Sweet opening nose, some grapefruit pith and reduction. Tastes finer than the nose, limpid and watery in a good way. This has come along since the last tasting where it wasn't particularly impressive. Very fine and ethereal, quite surprising, distant lime oil and grip. All round deliciousness.

Sample tasting at work (Oinoscent) : The wine shows med intensity in the nose, citrus, grapefruit, quince notes, some TDN rubbery notes, underlying candy notes, lemon drops. Palate shows dry texture, citrus, quince, grapefruit, again rubbery, high acidity, long persistent finish.

Smells of lemon zest, limes and green apples with gravel/stones, much the same on the palate with a chalky character replacing the stoneyness. Definitely has the Watervale stamp. Very tart, bone dry. Med intensity and med finish helped along by that chalky texture on your cheeks and tongue. It's pleasant and crisp, but it doesn't pop.

Smells very much like an Aussie Riesling. Dry and starchy in a very good way. Maximum starchiness.

Australia Trade Tasting (Lindley Hall, Royal Horticultural Halls) : Riper than imagined, fresh and fruit forward, same in palate, med body, pear infused finish

22nd Canberra International Riesling Challenge (Albert Hall, Canberra) : A little creamy lees, green apple, sulphur, lime and lemon. Medium plus intensity acidity, that green apple here as well, long with slight mid palate rasp. Hmm to okay.

The colour is clear pale lemon. The aromas intensity is medium. The aromas are blossom, Jasmine, lime, lemon, lime zest, lime peel, flint, apple, pear. The wine is youthful. The wine is dry. The wine has high acidity. The wine has a medium body the alcohol is medium, the intensity is medium, with a medium (+) finish. The flavours are lime, lemon, flint. The wine is good. Drink now, but suitable for further aging.

Lovely lime/citrus. Not overdone. Lovely mouthfeel (time on lees?) Long finish. Had a bottle prior to Indian Restaurant. Don't think much would stand up to a vindaloo... For $22 a bottle it's a bargain. Potential to cellar for sure.

Grenache tasting (Strand Cellars, Croydon) : Pretty fresh citrus/floral top notes, a little sulphur. Medium plus intensity acidity, quite tart on the palate, bone dry, muted fruit shows a little citrus...if it had a touch of residual sugar here would make the fruit pop a bit more, tiny little bit disappointing

Friday at the strand (Strand Cellars, Croydon) : Dusty, slightly baked earth, lime cordial, touch of slightly unripe green apple. Medium plus intensity acidity is sharp, lime notes with a touch of lime pith <shrugs>

Pale watery gold. Sharp sherbert opening nose, little bit of talc and quinine, crisp lime zest, young, pointed. Tasting shows a more restrained note than the nose, still a sharp zestiness, but it rolls back nicely as you drink it. Simple and young, talc and sharpness, but toned down. Ok, and a straightforward very young Riesling. Will be interesting to see if more depth and layers come out with age. As a very young immature Riesling, prefer the Torzi Frost …

You can tell this is Clare Valley Riesling from the first whiff before it's overwhelmingly revealed on the first sip. Lively corriander seed, lemon and lime zest, and elderflower nose. The acidity really bites and the fruit is relatively faint on the palate, again dominated by lime. There is a steely minerality here and the back palate has a sharpness that needs several years in the cellar to calm down. The finish is wonderfully floral and cirtus, however, and calms …
