Kanonkop, Paul Sauer, Stellenbosch

A very nice wine from a non-top SA vintage. 1 hour of decant needed. Fresh acidity. Fine and integrated tannins. Still fruit there. Red cherry, blackberry, cassis, graphite and cedar wood. A smooth and medium long finish. The wine will keep this level for 5+ years.

Really nice bottle. I would say it might easily hold for another 1-2 decades. Had to give it some air for like an hour. Great wine

Much better than the previous bottle. Nose of blackberries was wonderful as soon as I popped the cork and opened up even more in the glass. Lots of fruit on the palate with cedar and florals coming through. Tanis are well integrated which make the finish smooth.

Past it's prime. Just a hint of fruit remains.

Better than previous bottle. Still on the downward slope, but this bottle had a bit more fruit and life. Drink now.

Similar profile to the 1991, but simply not as good. Not as ripe and on a shorter trajectory (the 1991 is in its prime and this seems past peak). There is the characteristic alluring graphite nose, giving way to simple, mature red fruit. Acidic, sour palate, bordering austere, sinewy, weedy tannins, earthy soil and herbal edges through the unfortunately bland finish. Drinkable, but very much shifted toward the old world style and lacking fruit at this stage of its life. …

Very elegant wine. Drink this now or over the next year. Great stuff.
