Francois Raquillet Mercurey 1er Cru Les Puillets

Substantial, dense texture, chewy tannins. Good without being exciting.

On the nose, black cherry, cranberry, tobacco, and a touch of clove. Graphite and tart berries on the palate, along with subtle raw meat and dark chocolate. Cocoa powder and black pepper emerge on the finish. Light to medium bodied, with very high acidity. Overall, this wine is a bit unbalanced. Too young? Will try again in a few years. 87/88

This is a serious young burgundy that is fully approachable and enjoyable now, deep, red fruited, some grip, substantial

This smelled rather posh, raspberry, mulberry, a bit of leather, perfumed, classily oaked, and silky on the palate, young and tight, with a lot of tannin in the background - extraordinarily refined for a Mercurey, but after an hour or so it lost its voice and shut down

Lots of raspberry on the nose, sweet ripe raspberryish fruit on the palate, combining beautifully with the spicy oak, a fair bit of tannin, but fully covered by the fruit - fresh, lively, and delicious

The was a good drinking wine. It was better after being open for a couple of hours.

Agree with Vinsanity as he introduced me to these wines. Both Les Vasees and Les Puilllets are excellent wines, very smooth and should be even better a few years from now.

I've had this wine a few times in the last month. Fresh Pinot fruit - red berries. Somewhat light-bodied, with rather solid underlying acid structure. Fresh, vibrant fruit. Doesn't pretend to be fancy - this is a Burgundy to drink rather than examine, IMO. Delicious. The "Vasees" bottling from Raquillet has more (and darker) fruit; the Puillets is more delicate and perhaps slightly finer.

Full and rich on the palate, lots of violets and liquorice, the fruits there but still locked in a bit, and it broods with its ample tannins - another 2005 that needs to be left

Dense, purple, tannic, almost peppery, but bags of black pinot fruit backed with a fair whack of oak, but the whole nicely balanced - very young, but this could be very special indeed
