Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port Vertical : Lots of tannins and cherry fruit with a good depth and density. Lovely intensity and a young piercing acidity. Lovely but young wine.

Excellent depth of flavor with a long long finish. Thre mis-palate is a bit weak however, with less depth of flavor than expected.

Deep dark center, dark red rim with a little sign of age. Dense cherry and blueberry, creamy, some alcohol. Smooth with acidity, plums and cherries, a little meat, leafy, sap, minerals, rubbed stones, balanced sweetness, great length. Excellent port, still young, drinks well now with air, but better in 5 years.

Purchased on release and stored for 18 years. Flawless cork. Poured very dark, no signs of age visually or on the palate, still very primary. Could have gone another 18 years easily. Drink now if you like them young but mellow, hold otherwise.

Great VP, rich dark fruit, hardly noticed the RS, excellent balance between the complex fruit, oak and earthy notes, very long finish, easily will drink well for another decade plus. This was a pleasant surprise, as my expectations were much lower based on my previous experiences with this house had been mediocre at best.

Cork nearly disintegrated, but running through a cheese cloth saved it. Great port that can keep going even after all this time.

Deep dark center, dark red rim with some signs of age. Sweet, creamy, blackberry, some iron, a little floral. Smooth and jammy fruit, blackcurrant jam, peppery, sweet, good acidity and tannin, alcohol in check, wonderful licorice and ribena, great length. Drinking very well, approaching maturity, good for another 5+ years.

Beautiful and still has plenty of time to age. Wish I had a second to open in another ten years or so.

Aromas of plum cake, rich blackberry jam, along with anise and roasted coffee. Plush and rich with no harsh edges, massive dark fruit is still front and center (plum cake, roasted fig, blackberry), but also some earthy, roasted coffee notes. Delicious with plenty of time to go, but the dark and saucy young fruit is delicious in this one.

So good. What else could you want from port? Raisins, prunes, fig paste, espresso and brandy galore. No heat or edges. Just beautiful and full. This is going to sing for two more decades. Such a treat. A monument. Opened for 20 hours and didn’t move for two days. Huge core of fruit. It’s hard not to kiss this baby. 92

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port Vertical (Portvinsklubben 1981) : The alcohol is dominating and overshine the fruit. Slightly unstructured.

Very deep dark center, red/purple rim with very modest signs of age. Rich black cherries, blackberries and licorice, alcohol is under control, a little smokey, some herbs (tarragon), powerful and a little meaty. Sweet, grapey and complex, then a good dose of tannin and acidity, this needs more time, blackberries and dark cherries, cherry liquor, long sweet fruity finish. Very good port, needs 5 more years to shine but can be drunk now.

Quite basic really and I found this a bit disappointing. Lovely nose but then not matched by the flavour. Very short finish. For me just too light and too basic and lacks the depth of flavour I want in a good port. Still nice though.

more a basic porto than anything else. certainly smells and tastes like porto with nice plum and sweet raisin character but not much else. certainly no wow factor for a vintage porto. mouthfeel is nice but nothing special. finish is ok but not that lush you get with some other finer vintage porto.

Nose is plum brandy and dates, with notes of must and eucalyptus. Flavors are very similar, but with the addition of black raspberries, and notes of honey and almond instead of anything musty. Luscious mouth feel. This is a very tasty Port. Not normally a big fan of Ruby Port, but this one is quite enjoyable, even if it is young.

Color: Very dark, but not opaque. More red that purple... a very dark ruby color. Nose: A bit spirity, lots of dark red fruits. Possibly some dates. Also possibly some very faint smoke. Palate: Thin in the mouth, but tasty. Rich grape-like flavor with some dark and very ripe red raspberries. The tannins only seem adequate for a 2003, while the acidity is good. Finish: Good length, but not stellar. Flavors echo the palate. The finish is very clean with …

Very smooth. Very nicely integrated tannins and oak components. Great acidity. Lacking a bit in complexity compared to some better quality vintage ports.

Lots of fruit. Well balanced and drinking very well right now. Obviously will age 20+ years but if anyone feels like killing a young Vintage Port, this is a good one to drink young.

Very dark, almost black to the very edge of the glass. This was tasted over a period of five days. Every day it was a little different. Initially the nose was tight but over the course of a few days opened up to reveal tar, cherries, and plums. The palate shows lots of nice ripe fruit. Over time the palate gains complexity and weight that leads to a nice warm finish with complex flavors of plum, prune, raspberries, and cinnamon. …
