My contribution to a mini Chevillon tasting hosted at a friend's. Purchased back on clearance May of 2012 this has been properly stored since that time. Decanted 90+ minutes before this was poured. Bonus for being at nice cooler temperature. Note from memory. From my perspective this had the most backbone of any of the wines tonight and benefited the most from food. Dark raspberry, garrigue and earthy minerals with enveloping tannins bringing up the rear. Fruit should be able …

Chevillon Tasting (Craig & Nita's Place) : Medium dark red color. ! hour plus decant; drank a glass over 2 hours plus. Fun nose with filled with dried wood, white pepper, wood spices, vinyl, briary with darker fruits. The palate is bolder, deeper, and darker fruited. I like the woodsy, savory elements, gravel and tar make the minerality stand out; This has a bit more power and feels like the polished tannin is there to carry this awhile. This is …

Slightly cloudy crimson-ruby with a slight hint of orange. Hightoned red cherries on the nose. Intense red cherry notes, intense and a bit one-dimensional, but it does that dimension very well. The red cherries are intense and last a very long time into the finish .

2010 and older red wines (Craig's group) : Purchased from the same source as the bottle I opened a few months ago that was heat damaged, but this wasn't. It's a complex, very mature Burgundy that doesn't have a ton going for it. Scorched earth seems to dominate, and the wine is into the tertiary range of development. A touch vinegary that I occasionally convinced myself was blowing off and then wasn't so sure. Fun to drink, not a blockbuster.

Monthly Tasting Group: Aged Wines 2010 and Older (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN) : Small taste. I thought this was somewhat reductive. It seemed to flesh out more over time, bit didn't seem pristine.

Noticeable browning - gorgeous nose - sharp acid with shrill, short finish Far from the best vintage for this wine and a disappointment - NOT a fun wine to drink

Similar to my last note, although on this occasion I’d say this was a solid 94 and not a 94+ or 95. Also, this had some palpable barnyard notes, which mostly blew off after 5-10 minutes. While multifaceted and interesting, it’s the rusticity of Vaucrains that I think best sums up this bottling. A true pleasure to drink, once again.

Getting ready for primetime but still some ways to go . Loads of acid, savory fruit but not a lot of it and not super ripe. Definitely a food wine.

Quite linear with aggressive, piercing acidity, but there is good midpalate density to the dark fruit and beautiful tension from first sip to the sharp, still slightly tannic finish. Still a little backwards with respect to the firm acidity and drying tannins, but I'm sure this will blossom with just a little more age. However, even at maturity, this will still be a red Burgundy for those who crave mouthwatering freshness over plush fruit, and it won't be for everyone. …

Burgundy Brunch (Mezze and Moore, San Francisco CA) : The nose is expressive and with some restrained power behind the tones of sour red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, crushed berries, spice notes, fresh herbs, leather notes, with a lot of violets and wildflowers that hit into the upper register. This is just gorgeous on the nose as it shows off elegance and power together. The Medium bodied feel shows off some brawn while possessing a silky quality as well. The Medium+ …

Matt's 1989 Huet-a-thon (Noize) : Super nose: engaging, lively and complex, with delicate red fruit, sweet decay, and nettles. Sadly the palate doesn't live up to the nose, being tart and astringent and lacking depth of fruit. Certainly food-friendly, though.

As LARSTH aptly notes, this is “very Vaucrains” when it’s on, and this bottle was definitely *on* tonight. This was my first 2008 Chevillon Vacrains, and if this is any indication I am very excited about the remaining bottles in my cellar. Intense nose of red and blue fruit, as well as forest floor. On the palate this was deep, concentrated and rich, while remaining fresh. It was most certainly rustic, but maintained an elegance (relatively speaking) and balance that …

Red fruited, spicy, filigreed - fairly light bodied but balanced and with good persistence. I don’t think if had been blind I would have gone to NSG- more Volnay or Chambolle. Nice. B+

13% alcohol. Translucent, moderately evolved brick-red color with a brownish hue. The nose feels old and somewhat tired with aromas of meat stew and beef jerky, some wizened dark berries, a little bit of earth, light sharp notes of soy sauce, a hint of cranberry sauce and a touch of ripe red plums. The wine feels evolved, silky and somewhat tired on the palate with a medium body and moderately oxidative flavors of meat stew, some tart lingonberry tones, a …

David's btl tonight in the same flt with my 08 Mugnier NSG Clos Marechale. Made for a wonderful comparison of 2 great producers in the same vintage & appellation! The Chevillon was truer to classic NSG in weight, power and richness while the Mugnier could easily be mistaken for Chambolle blind. The Chevillon was concentrated, elegant, complex & long. Vertical/Horizontal Tasting of Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Premier Crus (San Francisco) : Similar in color to the Cailles. Fragrant mint. Light, high acidity, lots of soil, citrus note, but short on the fruit. Gentler tannins and better finish than the Cailles. Another terroir-driven wine. Well behind the 2010 and 2009 in quality.

Wow, so glad I got on board with Chevillon a decade or so ago! These '08s have always been both fun & promising. 15yrs out they're downright, sublime! This is concentrated, elegant, complex & long. Features red & blk raspberry, mineral, earthiness, spice galore and emerging forest floor on both the nose & palate. This is why we cellar wine! Browning very visible when poured. On the nose there's furniture polish, hibiscus and some oriental spice - but definitely mostly furniture polish. Fresh and elegant in the mouth with decent length. The rough edges of the vintage have all gone smooth, but it lacks the core of a better vintage. Still excellent, though. (I have now taken the point descriptions more seriously, and this is NOT outstanding.)

I see that other recent reviews of this wine have been a bit hit or miss. Our last bottle and another great delight. Certainly fully mature as evidenced by the significant amount of tawny bricking of an already comparatively light coloured wine. A heady mix of fruit and tertiary sensations on both nose and palate. Maybe just a slight shortness in the finish meant this wine did not enter the pantheon level that we know Chevillon wines can reach, indeed …

I'm liking this better on the nose than the palate, where I find this a little thin. I popped & poured this, so maybe it just needs some time to unwind. The nose does have a lot going on here, with briary red & black fruits - if I get a better read on the palate later with dinner, I'll update/edit my note. So I’m sitting here with a glass two days after I opened the bottle. On the plus …

Same as 2 prior bottles from same source - label is 2008, cork and texture is 2009. This is better than the last bottle in that it isn't flawed though the lower acidity, softer texture, and dark fruit suggest this is a 2009 rather than 2008.

Tasted over 2 hrs, bottle from Premier Cru, *Same as the last bottle, cork labeled 2009, label says 2008* -med dark red minimal bricking -mild reduction plum-like grapey -med acidity, not much fruit but dominated with a bitter torrefaction note, med- tannins -I think this is a 2009 but either way this is either flawed or some other wine altogether, it reminds me a bit of some Spanish wines

Roncieres is very steep vineyard with gravels. According to Jasper Morris, this always shows some ripe, almost cooked fruit with a Mediterranean touch (garrigue). This was a perfect example of this description! Started quite stewy. Put it in a decanter and while it got way better, it kept that extravagant southern profile. While this is not my favorite vineyard in the Chevillon lineup, this is definitely interesting and showing this particular terroir.

Showing very positive development and complexity, but the fruit is hiding. Austere today, but no longer bound up in its acid like the 2008s were on release. Overall a positive showing, but a strong hold.

Premier Cru bottle, label says 08, cork stamped 09. The wine shows ripe and soft and low acid. Tasty but lacking energy and lift.. Nothing wrong here but this tastes like 09, and it's very unlikely to bottle an 08 with an 09 cork - far more likely to put the wrong label on. A shame as I'm a much bigger fan of 08's.

This particular bottle gets an 89, after a four-hour decant. The rest of my half case from Zachy's seemed well past it, and--I thought--probably because badly stored before it came to me. But now I'm not sure. In any event, I can't say I've become a fan.
