Not an overly aromatic nose, even after several hours in the decanter. Nice dark cherry and aniseed flavours, but it's not particularly varietal. A little too ripe and alcoholic. Keeping it at 13-13.5% would have made for a better balanced wine. Having said that, not a bad effort from Penfolds with this Italian varietal. However, the style is more like a ripe fruit forward Aussie dry red, than a savoury floral Sangiovese.
